Cleaning Couch Cushions

Hi All!
I have a very old cat - over 20 - who is in relatively good shape for her age. However, she had an accident on our couch the other day. We have tried everything we can think of to get the smell out. I know that cat urine, especially in older cats, is almost impossible to remove. We are considering having it professionally steam cleaned but before we spend the money I thought I'd ask if anyone has had this situation before and what worked. I hate to spend the money on the cleaning if there really isn't anything we can do. Thanks for your ideas!!

What can I do next?

I've heared ODORZ OUT works great and is safe for pets and children. You can find it at almost every drugstore and Ace. Good Luck.

I have used Natures Miracle in the past for cat, dog and sick child accidents. It has always worked great. My daughter had an accident on the couch when she was sick (and taking penicillin) I didn't think I would ever get that smell out. Our cushions were not washable because they had springs in them, but with persistence the Nature's Miracle worked. I've even used it to get blood out. You can find it at Petsmart and Petco.

I have tried every product on the market and have not been pleased. And then I came across a "recipe" you make yourself that really truly works. Take 1/2 cup vinegar, 1 teaspoon dish soap and 4-6 drops eucalyptus oil and mix together. Pour on the affected spot and let it soak for 1/2 hour or so. Dab up the excess and let it dry. If it still smells strongly of eucalyptus that usually means it needs another dose. I know it doesn't sound right but another dose usually gets the rest of the cat pee and it will calm down after that. Good luck.

Go to www.uniquedistributors.com

They sell a great product that has live enzymes in it that actually "eat" away the mess. It takes away the smell.

I would go to PetSmart and see if they have anything to do this job. Either that, I would try Baking Soda and some water, and then let it dry and see if that does the trick. If not, my Granny used Vinegar and Water for this type of accident. She swore by it. LOL

For in the future, we invested in a Bissel ProHeat X2 Carpet Cleaner, which has hose attachments for furniture too. We get the Bissel solution for Pets because we have three cats. Works wonders. We spent about $200 on this thing and we've had it now for about three years. I absolutely love it! I use my machine about three times a year, and it's really good for the value of it! In fact, I'm due to do another carpet cleaning for Spring time.

My niece lived with me for a couple of months with her Dog, and he was an indoor dog. Border Collie to be exact. I had to shampoo my carpets at least once a month to keep my house from smelling like a dog. LOL My niece gave him a bath every couple of weeks too, so that helped.

Hopefully my advice helps you. If you use the ideas above, I would let it soak for a little bit before cleaning it off. That way it will soak the odor out. :-) OH OH OH...Also, you could try using some TIDE Laundry soap. Just a wee bit though since it will suds up real good. Let it soak and that may also do the trick. :-) I've used Tide on the floor boards of my car, and it worked great!

I had a male cat that urinated in my house (on carpet and tile) when he was stressed out. What worked best for me was to pour a generous amount of baking soda all over the area and let it sit overnight to absorb the moisture in the carpet fibers. Even if you think you've cleaned it all up, you'll be amazed by how much moisture will be drawn out and the baking soda will discolor. Then I vacuumed up the baking soda and used a liquid product called Nature's Miracle to clean the area. It has biological enzymes that help remove odor. You can buy it at Petsmart. You might want to check a small area first to make sure it doesn't discolor the fabric but it should work. Best of luck. :)

Have you tried the Get Clean line of Shaklee? I know of so many simililar stories where it has worked when nothing else has. If you're in the Albuquerque area I'd be happy to give you a small amount you can try.

First of all...you have a 20 year old cat? Wow...that's truly amazing! Secondly...Petco or Petsmart will have something for this problem. I don't remember what it's called, but I had a neighbor who was a cat rescuer and was constantly faced with cat "accidents" -- and she had a professional product from one of those stores that did the trick for her. It not only removes the smell from human noses, the cats won't even be able to smell it again making another "accident" far less likely. Good luck!

Try Nature's Miracle - it's sold at most major pet stores - www.naturemakesitwork.com. It seems to be the best thing for pet stains. I've actually used it for potty training accidents, since we don't have a pet. I did a lot of research and it seems to be the most successful product on the market. It breaks down the enzymes in the urine to remove the odor and stain. It was also recommended in Martha Stewart's homecleaning handbook. Good luck!

Hi S.,
I have an 18 year old cat and have had similar issues with her. I tried MANY different products on the advice of vets and friends, and these three seem to work well. The first is called Anti Icky Poo (yes, that's really what it's called). You have to buy it online either through their web site or Amazon is another choice if you want to read the reviews.

If you want something that won't take a few days to arrive, try KIDS 'N' PETS Brand Stain & Odor Remover (the liquid with the pop top cap, not the spray). I have gotten this at Albertson's (it is also available on Amazon if you want to read the reviews). One last option is Stink Free Instantly! Pet Urine-Odor Remover. You can buy this at PetSmart/PetCo. It smells like baby powder and works surprisingly well. Again, reviews on Amazon if you want to read them and learn more about the product.

You might also want to invest in a black light, which can help you find the entire stain and make sure you get it all out. I wouldn't suggest steam cleaning until after you get the odor out with one of the products above.

Good luck!

there is a product that I have only seen in the pet food stores like petsmart, its called (I think) pet odor remover, I bought a house that the prior owners had multiple cats (unneutered males!) the house reeked! My mother in law bought us a small bottle and we tried it in several places, and it worked great! we did have to go back and buy a bigger bottle tho to do the rest of the house! it does have a good smell to it too. this was so much cheaper then having someone come in and clean the walls and curtains! good luck!

Hi S....I am going through an identical problem right now!! My cat passed away last fall and in her last days she urinated on our couch. We paid for fabric protection when we bought it so we had them come out...their product actually made the smell worse (Guardsman is the company, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone). Then, we had an issue with stray cats coming in through our pet door and either the stray or our cat sprayed our couch in a different area. We had some leftover enzyme treatment from ChemDry and I used it on the couch. It seems to have worked fairly well, but I hate the smell of the product (reminds me of public bathroom air fresheners). When we lived in our apartment one of our cats refused to use the catbox and we used every single product that PetsMart/Petco sells and not one of them worked. I have found that using vinegar works well on hard surfaces, I haven't tried it on the couch yet (I'm going to this week though). I have heard that you do 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. It will leave a vinegar smell but it dissapates fairly quickly. I have also heard that you can make a baking soda paste with water and use that, but I haven't tried that on anything. The vinegar water got the cat smell out of our dining room furniture and wood laminate floors (whichever cat was spraying did a number on the whole house!!!). ChemDry is crazy expensive. We spent $700 getting our carpets cleaned when we lived in the apartment. You might just call and ask if it's possible to purchase the pet enzyme mixture...that's what we did, but we had also paid for their service. Good luck, if you find a great product let me know!!

S....
I am doubtful that any of the things listed as replies will work. My husband and I tried many of them when our cat decided to pee on the floor near our front windows. The smell will NOT come out. We have even steam cleaned our floors THREE TIMES since and had the company use their special enzyme cleaner that guarentees to get it out. It won't. Maybe you'll have better luck, but from my experience, I wouldn't waste the money.
Good luck!
