I'm surprising my hubby with a road trip from OKC to Atlanta for his 30th Birthday next month to go see his lifetime favorite team, the Braves, play at their stadium. He's also a huge civil war buff....sweet little history nerd. ;) Does anyone know any cool stops along the way? We'll be staying one night in Memphis. Thanks in advance! :))

What can I do next?

Definitely hit Chickamauga near Chattanooga (not exactly on the way -did that drive last week!) and Kennesaw National Battlefield slightly north of Marietta and Atlanta. Of course right in the city you have tons of historical markers about the Battle of Atlanta. My neighborhood and East Atlanta Village is where it primarily took place. Take him to the Cyclorama by the zoo in Grant Park. It's really cool, doesn't take long and he'll love it! It's also only about a mile from Turner Field.

If you're going through Memphis, you could possibly hit Shiloh National Battlefield as well. It's a huge park, very scenic, but a little off the beaten path if you're looking for a quick side trip.

This site might help you plan better. It has sites listed by state.

If it's not too far off-track for you, Nashville area has several Civil War things there. My kids were impressed with the house that still shows the cannon shot holes in the walls! (remember VERY THICK walls) Also remember one of the houses had a room in it were a couple of footprints on the floor were different color than the rest of the floor - period costumed storytellers said it was a 'hospital' and the doc never moved as they brought the wounded/dying in one after another.

Wilson's Creek Battlefield in Springfield, MO, is having a big re-inactment the 2nd weekend of August. That wouldn't be too far from Oklahoma City. We are going to be there for at least 2 days of it.
