Hi Moms,

My friend is christening her 18 month old daughter in a couple weeks.. She's only having family go and taking family out to dinner... I don't know an "appropriate" present to get... She's not a baby, she's 18 months.. There "not" religious either.. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Ask her parents if they have started a college fund. I know that is what we all did for a friends christening. Everyone contributed to the pre paid college fund. I always made afghans for christenings. Something they can hang onto for years and years. My niece is in her 30's and still has hers. A money cd would be nice.

Wow, I can't help but think that people who are not religious, but are having their child Christened are just looking for an excuse for a party and a gift-grab. What's the point in a Christening if they don't believe in it? It sounds farcicle to me, and I probably would choose not to attend, but would instead send a nice card and a book to the parents about Christening/Baptism so that they could learn about it.

I love, love, love monogrammed gifts, as they are personalized and will keep forever (or maybe a long, long time)...so how about a little child's stool or bench with her name on it, or a monogrammed hooded animal bathtowel and rubber ducky? Also, you can have little silver keepsake boxes (for her first hair cut, or first tooth) engraved with her name or initials.

they are not religeous but havign a christening? im torn with this, between buying something religeous and buying a tshirt for them. I would still go with religeous. maybe they will go in that path. I suggest a childrens bible book, and inscribe it with the date and write a message to the baby.

How about a nice frame that you could pick up from any Christian Book Store, and I also agree with McMama about a book. Even though she is little she is a sponge and I bought my girls a Mesage Bible with stories and pictures and ideas for discussion.

Why not get a bond? Or a gift card to Toys R Us or a visa/MC gift card?

We bought my niece a sterling charm bracelet with a christening charm. The bracelet can be expanded as she grows and other charms can be added as well. I do have to agree with the other posters who questioned the purpose of a christening for a non-religious family. There is nothing non-religious about the event.

get a savings bond. they start cost wise at $25 and double in value as the child gets older. you can get them in just about any denomination $25, $50, $75, $100 and up. my kids were all able to buy there own cars and help with college costs because they received these.

The normal charm bracelet or necklace works well or a memory box, (pretty box to put future memories in ), a coin collection from the year she was born, a well known collection of reading books or just a children`s bible. After all religious or not that is the meaning of christening a child!!
