I'm in the same boat as you. We have a 2 year old and a 4 week old. We got the baby a couple new teething toys to have. Sophie the Giraffe is a good one...and some wooden teething toys.

We told family to get her savings bonds. I know they aren't worth much now but its the thought.

Also think of a keepsake item. Something engraved or personal that he can treasure for many years to come.

I'm sure people will get him plenty. I say buy a cute clothing set, teether, music/light up fisherprice toy, or one of the baby books that make crinkle noises and have mirror and teething ring. Have a great Christmas. I loved having two little ones!

I'd suggest keeping it simple for him. Buy him a savings bond or start a college savings plan to put the majority of his Christmas money into. You can get him a tooth brush, a small toy/stuffed animal, diapers, an empty box...he won't care. But let him open something. That's so fun! Just keep it simple & inexpesive at this age.

Books - the kind that are sturdy. You can start reading to him now. I like the ones with different textures - you can run his little hands over them.

Remember, everything that he gets will end up in his mouth at some point - make sure things are non-toxic and big enough that he cannot swallow them.

We also got some books for my son on his first Christmas and wrote a little note inside that it was from mommy and daddy for Christmas and the year. I have some books from my childhood that have the name of the person and the date who when it was given to me and I still have some of them - it's nice to see their name and handwriting. He might like seeing his name in the book when he's older so he knows that was something just for him, not a hand-me-down.

My dad opened a 529 college savings plan for my son for Christmas too. Also, what about a special stuffed animal? I know he's still too young to sleep with it or anything, but hand-me-down stuffed animals tend to show their wear a lot more than the plastic stuff.

My son was around this age at Christmas time. Someone suggested I should have gotten him his lifetime hunting and fishing license (which in NC is considerably cheaper when bought for infants). I wish I had of thought of that. Not sure if your family are the outdoorsy type, but you might look into that in your state if interested.

I agree that books are great. We bought tons of books for my daughter when she was a baby and she has quitw the library now. She also loves to be read to and look at the books. Maybe a new outfit or two would bve great as well. At that age they dont really have a clue so you can always get something for the future. Even buying stock in their name is great.
