Chiropractor and Pregnancy

I don't whether it's coincidence or not - but my back has been killing for about a month now, and I just found out I'm 6 weeks pregnant. I've always been really fearful/distrustful of chiropractors, and my husband is even more so, BUT... my back is really killing. I would just go see my primary doc, but I'm not sure there's really anything she can do for me.

Any experiences good or bad with chiros? Any while pregnant?

Thanks!

So What Happened?

While in Dallas for business, I did go see a chiro - one who also has a masseuse and physical therapist on staff. I have to admit, my back does feel better. I'm still a little nervous about adjustments to the neck, but I'm going to give the back another chance and see the chiro again in 2 weeks.

Thanks everyone!

I went to the Chiro while pregnant and loved it! He is very gentle and loves treating pregnant women. I still see him about once a month and my 2 year old daughter loves him and askes for him by name. I hope you go it will make you feel alot better.

I went once when pregnant with twins and it did make a difference but what really helped me was going to a massage therapist and getting accupuncture. They were wonderful!! I went once a month and I felt great. I was huge but I went full term and was walking around until the very last day.

GO...You will feel so much better! I had never been until I was prego and the baby was on a nerve in my leg which made it hard to walk or sit. I ended up having to go the entire time I was prego. Just make sure you find one who works with prego women. Your OB might be able to help you find one.

Good Luck!

I *loved* my chiropractor when pregnant. They definitely helped ease all my pregnancy aches and pains! Your center of balance changes when you are pregnant, so that can definitely hurt your back! If you do decide to go find a chiro trained and experienced in working with pregnant patients.

Chiropractic was one of the best things I did for myself during pregnancy. The adjustments are very gentle, the equipment specialized for your growing belly. Despite years of chronic back pain, I had NO back pain during my pregnancy (that changed once I went into labor!).

I've experienced many people that feel the same as you. Chiropractic has changed A LOT over the years and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The key is to find someone that will answer your questions and give you some time to get used to the idea. Be sure that you express your fears and concerns.

I used Cindy Tovar down in Webster--I can't remember the name of her practice off the top of my head. You'll like her.

I was seeing a chiropractor for years before I got pregnant. I talked to my OB about seeing him during my pregnancy and he said by all means, it was perfectly safe. My chiroprator is very gentle. I went to him after every OB appointment and I never had back/hip pain during my pregnancy. I also made sure to see him the day before I went into the hospital to be induced. You can check out my chiropractor's web site he is in New Braunfels but the site is helpful www.stampschiropractic.com - there is even a FAQ section that addresses pregnancy. He said that it can not only help with discomfort during pregnancy but can help with labor and delivery as well. If everything is alligned properly, nerve function is at it's best. Remember that chiropractic medicine is about properly alinging muscles, nerves, and skeletal systems for optimum functining, not just pain management. Think of it as preventive measures. You will be amazed what all can be helped with an simple adjustment aside from pain.

I personaly would recommend physical therapy rather than chiropractic help. I say this because I have now had both assist me in 2 different pregnancys. I have preferred the physical therapy help because they taught me stretches and exercises that I have been able to do throughout this current pregnancy and can do long after I have the baby. My experience with chiropractors is that it is very short term, you go and get popped, feel alot of relief, and then within a week you are right back where you started with the same kind of pain. They don't put emphasis on the stretching which will help so much when they are not around.
Your right though, doing nothing is not the answer!
Good luck!

YES GO! You will find (more so down the line) that your back will be sensitive as well as your hips because there is a loosening of the (ligaments or joints?) from pregnancy hormones. So you want to be cautious about what you lift and carry. With my first child I actually had a lot of pelvic pain AFTER birth and after seeing several doctors it was repaired in one chiropractic visit (which other doctors told me not to do). So with my 2nd pregnancy I had regular chiropractic care all through my pregnancy and it was a much easier pregnancy, delivery and recovery. I highly recommend it.
