Chest Pressure/tightness

I am just searching for some ideas here...I have been having chest pressure and tightness since October (no pain though, although sometimes it is so uncofortable I can hardly stand it.) I am nursing and lugging around a chunky 10 month old and I am small-framed. In fact at this stage with my other two kids my back always really hurt. My back hurts as well, although I have been getting relief from that pain from a chiropractor! I have seen a medical doctor about my chest and she said, after a brief examination, that she believes it is muscular and related to my back pain. She is the one who actually suggested I see a chiropractor. I did get some relief from the chiropractor when I was seeing him 3x per week, but it is so hard to say for sure because it comes and goes all the time anyway. It is not worse when I eat, lay down, get up, etc. I can find no reason for it coming or going. It has been both present and gone for an entire week at a time while I am doing nothing differently. I did try a Zantac tonight, hoping maybe it is just heartburn (someone suggested it may be) and it didn't even phase it. I am planning on going back to the doctor here soon but was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar or has any suggestions? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I had what they diagnosed as muscle spasms a couple of weeks after my son was born. My chest would get so tight that it felt like my lungs were in a vice. I actually went to the emergency room (in an ambulance, no less), because the first time it happened I felt like I couldn't breathe and it scared my husband so badly.
I think it mostly had to do with how I was sitting when I was breastfeeding and just my body getting used to carrying around my son all the time. After a month or so it stopped happening.
Hope this helps.

If you think it may be chronic heartburn, a single Zantac won't resolve it. You need to try a week or longer on a daily dose of Prilosec or something similar.

Check with your doctor though, to make sure it is okay to use when breastfeeding.

If the doctor thought it was muscular, I would suggest taking advil (which is an anti-inflammatory) around the clock for 3 days and see if it gives it a chance to recover. Please check with your doctor first but when I had muscular pain in my shoulder that would not go away, my doctor prescribed 600 mg (equivalent of 3 advil) every 6 hours and it took care of it. They can also prescribe a muscle relaxer which helps as well.

Hmmm.
I'm glad you're following up on this with your doctor.
Could it be anxiety?
Did you know that many people who present in the emergency room with chest pain are actually found to be suffering from anxiety?
Also, did you have chicken pox as a child?
I only ask because I suffered with chest pressure and tightness for months. It came and went without explanation. When I was pregnant, we were sure it was just my back and I was under the care of a chiro. I ended up getting shingles. Not to scare you. But it was a relief when I actually broke out because there was an explanation for it. It's viral so it doesn't show up on any tests. I thought I was having a heart attack or a lung tumor or something because some days it was even hard for me to breathe.
Heartburn, or GERD, can cause pain in the chest and back too.
Keep following up with your doctor.

I hope you feel better soon!

Could it be asthma? I know is sounds weird but some people actually develop it in their 30's who have never had it before, it is quite common. Mention it to your dr and look up the other symptoms to see if you have any. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

I went to the dr for chest pain/tightness a couple of weeks ago and the dr said it sounded like it was just stress (since there was nothing physically wrong with me). try to notice how you're feeling mood-wise when it comes. i realized when it first happened, i was stressing over my job/money situation and it didn't go away for a few days after. regardless, the dr prescribed me an inhaler b/c even though it is caused by stress, your body's having an actual physical reaction and the inhaler will help open up your lungs.

i have had that on and off for about a year now. Mine is stress related and will not come on when i am stressed at teh time but will come when I am relaxing watching tv or reading a book...not when I am in the middle of the stressful situation. My Doc helped me diagnos this...he basically told me 'stop trying to do everything'. he put me on Zoloft to help with the tightness, however after being on that for a couple months OTHER issues started to happen (not phyiscally) my ____@____.com drive went in the toilet which started causes issues with me and the hubby relationship, my house was dirty and I really didnt care. its like I walked around like a zombie and that was ok...so I got off the Zoloft. I still get the pains and always have in the back of my mind that "am I Having a heart attack?" You should try to reduce the stress in your life or get it organized so you are not on the go go go all the time...take some ME time (I should be listening to my own advice right??"
Good luck..koodos for making it breastfeeding for sooo long..I dried up about 2 weeks when I went back to work full time.

You need to get the book PAIN FREE by Pete Egoscue. This book is ALL ABOUT muscular imbalances. I'm a certified posture alignment and pain management specialist and deal with this on a DAILY basis. This book is VERY user friendly.

I have had clients improve their hearburn issues by OPENING up the chest area and engaging the muscles in the upper and mid back. May not make sense to you but if you think about the esophagus being scrunched (and it IS if your chest muscles are tight - as WELL AS your heart, lungs, etc.) then when you get this open, everything works better.

I'm in Fishers. Let me know if you want to make an appointment.
