A little background on my son. He was born two months early due to infection and a medical condition that I have. He was very I'll at birth. He was in the NICU for seven weeks. Since than he has been pretty healthy besides asthma and chronic ear infections. Well he is behind developmentally. He will be three in a little less than a month and he doesn't talk at all. He see all kinda of OTs Ect. We believe he has some form of autism among other things like possibly a sensory disorder, ADHD, and mild hearing loss. None if which has been confirmed yet. Anyways my sons normal behavior is VERY active to say the least lol. He's constantly climbing things and running everywhere. For the last few days he is extra calm... Which for my son is unusual. He has just been sitting on the floor playing with toys and not really getting into anything like he usually does. He also has been more affectionate, which isn't totally out of the norm but due to his sensory issues any affection he did show was very quick. He would run over for a quick hug and kiss and runaway to play. This week he has been lounging on the couch with my husband for long periods of time. Also he stopped taking naps a few months ago.... This week he has taken three naps. One day he feel asleep on the playroom floor! I haven't seen him do that since he was a tiny baby! He's not constantly like this though. When we take him outside he's running everywhere and acting normal. He also has periods during the day where he seems "normal" for a while. He's also started having screaming fits over almost anything. I assumed he was learning this from the little girl my sister watches ( she's constantly screaming at the top if her lungs when she doesn't get her way) he never did this until he started playing with her. Im not sure if he should go to the doctor and I'm very nervous to take him around all the sick kids with all that's going around , if he doesn't need to be seen. Any ideas what's going on???

So What Happened?

I'm not sure what exactly caused it. He has seemed fine over the last few days as far as energy. His friends came over yesterday and we played outside for a couple hours. He didn't get tired at all. He actually didn't even nap yesterday. I've been closely watching him when he does sit down and it seems like it's more about him paying very close attention to whatever he's playing with then actually being tired or lazy. The extra naps last week, I'm still not sure what that was about. I have an appointment for friday. I want to have his iron checked. He was serverly anemic when he was about a month and a have he actually had to have a blood transfusion because he needed the extra blood cells. He was on poly vi sol with iron until he was one and the doctor told me to stop giving it to him. They tested his iron then and it was normal but again at the time he had been taking the supliment. I am also anemic. I have I take iron three times a day. His diet is very poor. Because of his sensory issues he will not eat anything that has a "wet" feeling. so he doesn't eat meat. Mostly he only will eat crackers, toast , things like that. I try to feed him yogart and peanut butter for protein. He also won't eat veggies of any kind. I was giving him pedisure and his doctor said not to, that they had a lot of sugar. As for his delays... No he doesn't see a speech therapist yet. They do not feel it would be helpful yet because he can not follow most verbal commands yet. We have been trying to teach him to sign and also use picture boards for communication. I just had a meeting with a women from the early intervention program that he is in. He is phasing out of that and will now be going into the county's program. He is going to start school at the local elementary school the week he turns three. It's a special needs program that will mostly work on skills need to be successful in school, but they also believe it will help with his language and social skills.

I suggest that this chang is OK. As he gets older he will continue to have changes. His body could be getting ready for a growth spurt or another physical change. It could also be that his therapy is working. Because he is active outdoors I think he is OK. I would ask about this at his next therapy appointment. My grandson's therapists have been helpful for us.

I don't think he is ill or gettiing ill based on your description. The medicAL field suggest only taking a child to see a doctor is when the child has a fever or when they are lethargic for more than a week. Your son's behaviour is not lethargic. He paticipates in life, only differently.

Isn't getting this sort of behaviour your goal? I'd embrace and nurture it.

It sounds like how my son is right before he gets sick; cold, etc.
Have you called and talked to the pediatritions office. Our pediatritions has a nurse who is on the phone most of the day talking to parents and offering suggestions if she thinks the child might need to be seen by a dr, etc.

His current behaviors

1. He probably has an ear infection.

Seriously, he's acting like a kid that's fighting off an illness.

For a long term diagnosis

2. Find a children's hospital in your area that has a pediatric diagnosis clinic and call them. See if they'll do an evaluation on him for a diagnosis. He can start school as soon as he turns 3 if he has a permanent diagnosis.

In Oklahoma any child that has a life long diagnosis of something like Autism they get to start school at age 3. It's like a beginning special ed class but the goal is like a Head Start classroom. They start them on the things they'll need in kindergarten.

Sounds like he is fighting an illness or infection. Extra cranky, tired and lethargic is usually a sign of illness, or maybe a growth spurt.

You mentioned OT - does he have a speech therapist? If he doesn't, he really needs one. Being non-verbal can take its toll and cause the screaming regardless of watching another child do it.
