My son who is 20 months old, had his diaper off & climbed up on the toilet & peed. I am totally puzzled as to what to do next. I had not even planned on starting the process until after his 2nd b-day. I have heard stories about how hard boys are to potty train & that the average age is 3 1/2 yrs. My daughter was completely trained at 2 1/2 yrs & I thought that went easy especially since she had a baby brother. What should I do next? Does this mean he is ready to start? How fast should I go with it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I have been letting him run around naked when we are at home & he has been consistently peeing in the toilet. When we go out somewhere I put on a diaper, but still take him to the bathroom. He has stayed dry all day today & we were very busy doing things! I think mastering pooping will be another story though as I remember that being a little more challenging with my daughter, but how much easier could it get really? Thanks for all the helpful responses!

All I can say is go with it Brekka. He will let you know if he is ready. My son started at about 18 months on his own and we rolled with it, then he regressed at about 2 1/2 and it took us another 6 months or so to get him trained. Don't be frustrated with him if it ends up not being the real thing.

Let him do what he can on his own. If you make too big a deal of it now, he'll stop. Just because you want him to. It might be that he is ready. Every child is different. He may be ready but remember it could have just been a fluke. Don't sweat it and if he is ready now, be prepared for a little backsliding at about age three. Good Luck!!!

well Brekka,
Being the mother of 3 boys and 2 girls who are well beyond that stage now of potty training my advice would be to just go with the flow{no pun intended} .He may do it again and if he does than just congratulate him and if he doesnt' dont' worry about it. I found that my boys were much easier than girls. Each of my girls were over 3 yrs old before they were ready.

Really chances are he saw his dad to it and wanted to try. I would not even bring it up to him and just see what he does. when it comes to potty training my motto is.....the less pressure the better it goes for both mother and child.

good luck

I actually think that is the age both of my boys, tried to start. My younger was easier than the older, because he had big brother around, and wanted to do what big brother did. We did pull ups, but found him still wetting them, when we tried underpants(with stretchy sides), went so easy, a week later, no ptty during the day, because he did not want to feel wet. During the day 4 year old was trained 1 1/2 months after started, and was trained before 2. Oldest son was 2 1/2.
Good luck, one of the new adventures we go through with our childre, as they learn so do we.

My son was finally toilet training by the age of 20 months so YES he is ready to start and every time he eats drinks and when he lays down for a nap or at bedtime take him physically to the bathroom yourself or if you are not there the person whom is taking care of him. If you do this he will be finally trained within 4 to 6 months.

Lol, thats too funny, sounds like your kids are real prodigies. Off to Harvard at the age of 16? Maybe? Anyway, I started training my son at 15 months. Nothing too intense just started introducing the potty chair and I had no real troubles "training" him. He was trained by the age of about 2 1/2 and out of diapers at night at 3 1/2! I would def follow the advice of others and let him lead you. The faster he gets out of diapers the better, right? On the other hand with a boy, i had troubles wondering when to encourage him to stand up. He is going to be 4 on the 30th of this month, and he has been standing for the last 5 months or so. Good Luck with you little "Doogie Howser, MD"

Give it a shot my son was about that age, he happened to get out of the bath and I said "don't pee on mommies floor" next thing I knew he was sitting on his potty going pee pee, it happened to have been in the livivng room cause he wanted it brought in there, we brought it out a few months previous to start introducing it. I decided to give it a try,I let him run around naked and put the potty wherever he wanted it and within a week he was trained, I ran into an issue a month later when he got constipated, and that was a little set back but beyond that by the time he was 2 he went on his own, Thankfully! Good luck!

What you hear is not true for every child. If your son is climbing up on the toilet and peeing, it's time.

both my girl and boy were all into it at around 18 months as well and i though great! we'll get this going early.
but then that didn't last and they went back to not wanting on the potty at all..lol
so just be prepared. i sure hope he will continue on for you. but if he is having accidents for longer than a week then he's not ready and i would put him back in diapers and wait a few weeks to a few months but continue to talk to him positively about wearing big boy underwear, having him pick out some he likes, and continue to ask him if he wants to go sit on the potty. just keep it in the conversation. once my son was ready it only took him two days of accidents then that was it! he was 3 years and 5 months back on june 2nd.
my daughter will be 3 in november so i hope her attitude about the potty will change soon!! she is all about wearing the underwear but won't go on the potty now for nothing..lol even cries and fights ya if you try to sit her onit. so we wait for her.
but still bring it up many times daily. she'll get tired of us asking her and just do it i hope..LOL LOL
good luck.. congratulations if he continues on. two out of diapers.. whoo hoo..

I say, Go with it! The sooner the better not to be changing diapers! Now all you will hear is "Mommy, come wipe my butt"! I don't think it really matters how old a child is, if he is giving the go-ahead by wanting to use the potty himself I think he is ready. Also, I read an article about how some Mothers have been potty training from birth! One lady actually has a child that slept through the night without peeing or pooping its diaper since he was 6 months old! Apparently it is easier to do than we thought! Seeing as you are home with him that should make it easier too, so, Good Luck and congratulations on having a self assured little man who knows what he wants and goes after it!

Anyway.

Girl,

Go with it. Just follow his lead. When it's about time for him to go... we sat our son about 15 - 20 mins after each meal. This didn't always work, but it established a routine for him.

Since you're at home with him and your daughter, I would suggest whenever she goes, have him go to. This will help reinforce the potty training. Another thing that helped when we were training our son was taking him to sit on his potty whenever we were going to go.

Since we put our son into big boy underwear right away, he had a few accidents, but we just dealt with the messes. His daycare didn't care as long as they had enough changes for him. From the time he started showing interest at 18 months; he was completely trained by 2yrs 7mos.

So stick with it and establish a routine as soon as you can with him. Having your daughter as a role model for him will help too.

Good luck!!!

I think if he is ready then go with it! Don't make a big deal out of it...just tell him "good job" when he does it! My daughter has started wanting to use the toilet so I went and bought her a potty chair and every time that I use the toilet I ask her if she wants to use her potty. Sometimes she pulls at her diaper signaling to me that she wants to use it so I let her and other times she will walk away and say "No". I let her do what she wants to and so far it is working well. She has peed in it twice and pooped in it once! I let her control how ready she is to do that. Good luck!

My son did the same thing except he was not even 10 mos. old. He went to the bathroom with his older sister, yeh, well she was only 3, the thing was the trainer was beside the big potty and she was on the big one. So he decided to do the same thing. We were all excited so I kept it going that way. He never wore diapers except at night, but that only lasted for about a week. So go with it. let him pick out big boy pants. Gook luch and congrates!, you don't really have to do anything except maaybe ask once in a while if he needs to go.

I would simply follow his lead. Give him the opportunity to use the bathroom each time you change his diaper. If he takes his diaper off and climbs up there again to pee then praise him and help him get his diaper back on. Who knows he may loss interest in a week or two, so don't force it at this point.

Could be just a fluke, but sounds like he's ready! I have two little boys. My first, now almost 5 y.o., didn't potty train until he was 3. My second is potty trained at 2 y.o.! I was just as surprised as you. He always wanted to be like his big brother, right from the beginning.

Also, children are cognitively ready to train at 18 mo., so the experts say...

Good Luck! Yeah, no more diapers!
