Does anyone out there have a child who attends Cason Lane Academy in Murfreesboro? My daughter is zoned to begin school there next year. My question is about their kindergarten teachers and how they handle children who already know thier colors, numbers 1-1000, how to spell, read and write. Do they try to individualize their care of these kids, or will she sit and be bored out of her little mind? I need all the advice I can get on this b/c it's turned into a big battle between my husband and I. He wants her to go across town to Discovery or McFadden and I want her at Cason Lane.

What can I do next?

My children are well past kindergarten, but both my children were at McFadden and I know a child who was in kindergarten at Discovery last year. Cason would not accept county school students so we were not eligible to go there. I think you should arrange to go to Cason Lane, McFadden, and Discovery and observe their kindergarten classes. Talk to the kindergarten teachers and ask your questions, no one knows your child the way you know your child.

You also need to be aware of the different calendars of these three schools. Some families want the year round calendar some don't, make sure they fit your family schedule.

I have no advice for you. I just wanted to tell you whatever you decide that you need to keep up with your chid's education. My son was grossly neglected by the school system and only tested as gifted at my own assistance. As a new mother, I did not know the options available to me. My son loved kidergarten because he had never been in a school environment. His first grade teacher was threatened by smart kids and it was not till after I took him to my college over spring break that three professors stressed the importance of him getting tested. He is now in second grade and just started a gifted program and LOVES it. He too complained of boredom before. Also he has a wonderful second grade teacher. His program is for two hours every monday. He is happy so I am reluctant to push any further but I hope my journey shows that parents can be active in their children's education, and to trust your instincts. Can you observe or maybe talk to the principal, interview or anything of that sort?

M.,
I read your request and although I can't help you with what you really asked for I do have a few questions for you if I may. You meantioned Cason Lane school. I don't live far from that. You said you had a 2 yr old and your worked.
I just took a new part time so I won't have to have a babysitter everyday, however, I will need one occassionally in the afternoons.
Could I ask where you take your child for daycare and could I get the telephone number from you? And I assume that you are happy with the care you have been getting.
Thanks so very much.
M.

First you have to test into those schools so don't get too excited in case, by chance, she does not get in. Secondly, I would definitely try to get her into Discovery. They are ahead by about 6 mos of public schools. It is a great school, I have several friends w/ children there. Lastly, Cason Lane is also a good school, I have a friend whose daughter goes there. But, I would set up a meeting with the director of M'boro City Schools, her name is Daniel Kaminsky (sp?) and the principle. that is what I did and it really helped. You can ask them the criteria and what they think while also finding out what the school has to offer in terms of classes for those that are ahead of the normal children. Make sure you keep in mind that they look for many things at these schools and if she does not get in, it may not just be about what she knows. I thought my son was a shoe in and he did not get in b/c he is a young kindergardener. He is about 3-5 months younger than most and that makes a world of difference at this age.

Good luck, W.
