Cars with Tires That Tilt

This is not a parenting question, but I hope you'll oblige me- what do they call those tires where it seems it is all hubcap and not much tire, also the tires are set on an angle where the top is more center and the bottom tips out. Do these do anything to improve the ride or is it the new kid on the block re how to pimp your ride?

Thanks a bunch
F. B.

I think you are talking about "low profile" tires?

They are typically WIDER than "normal" tires and you only see about 1" or 2" of black instead of the "normal" 4"?

They are wider, so they have more contact with the pavement. They SAY they offer an "enhanced" steering and handling performance.

However, when I have ridden in a car with low profiles? I found that the ride was VERY hard and stiff.

low profiles. others discussed that below. the tilt? thast not good for the tires nor the suspension. adds un needed stress and should be avoided. its probably a way to pinp the ride.. which might look neat, but is not always in the best interest of the vehicle

They are low profile tires and for most cars, they are all "pimp your ride". A guy I worked with about 10 yrs ago put them on his car, put lights under the car. Then he had a problem with something under the car and the manufacturer would not cover it because he modified the car and voided the warranty. If it was a recall, they would repair but with the issue he had, he had to pay out of pocket.

My daughter got a ride home in an Uber that had those tires last week and she complained about the ride home. She felt all the bumps in the road.

Low profile tires give you better steering under performance conditions (help the car stick to the road when taking turns at speed). Downsides are that 1) you feel every bump in the road and 2) if you live in the north where roads get potholes, it's much easier to dent the rim when you hit a pothole increasing the chance of a flat tire.

I would have passed on this question, since I haven't had a car with the exact same type of tires you're talking about. But the memory of having "performance tires" on an Acura when I read your description that says "it seems it is all hubcap and not much tire" spurs me to tell you my experience. Three times, oh yeah, THREE, I barely touched the curb pulling into my driveway. Three times my tire went flat. I had to pay over $300 for each one. I HATED THAT CAR because of that.

I didn't keep that car very long...
