I use an all natural carpet and rug cleaner/deodorizer. For rugs I take them out once a month and beat them until no more dust flies out.
Weekly I sprinkle the natural carpet cleaner over rugs and carpet, let it sit a few hours or overnight and then vacuum out. It has a strong smell when it's sprinkled on the carpet, but after vacuuming it leaves a light scent. If you find the smell too strong, reduce the amount of cloves.

I've used this recipe for several months now and my carpets are clean and odor free. It even gets out the smell of dog (I have 2 large dogs) and it removes stains. For stains, rub the cleaner in and let it sit overnight. For stubborn stains make a paste, rub in, let dry, vacuum out.

Dry Carpet Cleaner

2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
4 to 5 bay leaves
1 tablespoon cloves

Spot test a small, inconspicuous area of your rug first to test for color stability of the fibers. Put the ingredients through a sifter until blended. Chop or crush bay leaves so they blend well. Sprinkle lightly on your carpeting and allow to sit several hours overnight. Vacuum up. Store dry carpet cleaner and deodorizer in a coffee can.

We have a steam cleaner (just like the ones you can rent in the store) and we just use water to clean our carpets. If there is a bad stain, we use a non-toxic cleaner that you can also get in the same place.

Honestly, I use Resolve, and I just make sure it's dry before I put my daughter down to play. I haven't had any problems with it...but then again, I don't generally look for natural cleaners because my experience with them hasn't been great. I really like things to be clean and sterile, so I tend to go towards the other end of the spectrum. As far as I can tell, honestly, chemicals haven't done any harm to my children. Of course, they aren't ingesting them and I'm not cleaning the high chair tray with Lysol...you get the picture. :)

I have a Bissell Pro Heat steam cleaner and we use it to clean our carpets.

We use the Hoover pet solution to shampoo then we rinse with water.

The other day, I cleaned my purse with the attachment for the Bissell with my All HE and a little bleach. It worked perfectly.

I had a stubborn stain in a hallway and used this solution and it worked like a charm. I may not purchase the solution anymore, I might just use my All HE (diluted greatly) and a little Clorox.
