Hello, my 2.5 yr old girl gets car sick A LOT. We just got back from a 12 hour trip and she threw up two times. We make sure she is in the most elevated car seat and try to keep her out of the side that is in the sun. I have tried dramamine/gravol and even just benadryl hoping it will make her tired enough just to sleep through it but she seems to respond to drugs that make most kids sleepy in an opposite way...they seem to make her even more wakeful and the dramamine doesn't appear to help at all. I am looking for suggestions other than what I have already tried to help with her motion sickness.
Thanks K. H.

You might want to try sea bands. They work through accupressure--totally non medicinal. They actually helped me with morning sickness. You can find them in almost any pharmacy/drug store. I got mine at Target (but I had to ask because they were hard to find).

K.,
I feel for her! I have been prone to car sickness my entire life. I have some tips for you to try. Put her in a space with the most unobstructed view of the road. Looking ahead out the window definately helps. For example, way back in the van is much worse than directly behind the passenger seat. Dairy during the trip always made it way worse. Just doesn't settle right if you are already queasy. On shorter rides, where it isn't necessary, books and other "lap projects" are terrible. On longer trips, try "Bonine" or the generic brand of it. I know Target has one. It is like a non-drowsy version of Dramamine. It even comes in chewable. It works WONDERS for me. Another great trick that helps some: some pharmacies sell "sea-bands". They are like little sweatband-looking bracelets with a bead that presses on the inside of your wrist. It is an accupressure method. For me, sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't. I can wear them on airplanes, but not if I'm doing a lot of turning around or reading in the car. You would need to find a child-sized version of the band, though. It needs to be tight fitting. Good luck. The bonine is GREAT for long rides.

Hi K.-
All too common......
She's young, but try to have her focus on looking out the Front window only.
Make sure she has hydration and a little bit of cracker type food in her stomach to absorb the acid reaction.
Try to let her have fresh air- even in winter - with the ability to have the window at least cracked
No smoker type smells in car.
Can you tell I"ve been through this myself........and have a twin with same......... : )
Make frequent stops so she can "settle"
And lastly- switch over to Bonine. They actually have a kid version now- I"m too thrifty to use that- so at 3 yo gave 1/4 tablet adult- (dissolvable and easy to hide in food- small and rasp taste so they like it). At almost 7 now Jenna gets 1/2 tablet and actually reminds us. No drowsiness and works like a charm!
Ps- I was just up fishing in NW Saskatchewan- all the help there was from Saskatoon- great fun and superb fishing- beautiful country!

Your daughter's vestibular system (inner ear; balance) may be weak due to poor structural alignment or immaturity. Craniosacral therapy and reflex integration therapy can help with this. C.
