My nephew is three. For quite sometime now he has gotten car sick on long rides. My sister is getting ready to have to take him on one. Do any of you guys have any suggestions to help out with this? Are there any medicines she can give him? Thanks for any advice you can give us!

As someone who used to get car sick and still does from time to time, I have to have air blowing on my face. That seems to help me.

Ginger Trips makes a ginger wafer that tastes alright. Have her pack gingersnap cookies. Ginger is great for motion sickness. If that doesn't work, maybe he can use dramamine in a low-dose after consulting a doctor's advice on that.
Keep him from reading or focusing on any particular thing. Looking out the window and pointing out interesting things would be good. Also if she can arrange for him to be tired enough to sleep, that might be a good solution. Good luck.

My granddaughter also has a problem with motion sickness. When my daughter asked about what she could do, he recommended children's Dramamine. It's worked for us ever since. Hope this helps! :o)

I used various cookbooks for making my baby's food and they were all acceptable. What I want to recommend is that you sign up for Greenling.com. They deliver organic food to your home once a week and it was such a wonderful way to get seasonal, organic produce to make my son's food. They have different packages and offer lots of items. In general they are the same price as Whole Foods (without the drive!).

Good luck!

J.,
Have her ask the doctor about giving him Bonine Chewable for children. That is what we are going to to give our son on our cruise.
Good luck,

I used to get horribly car sick all through my childhood, as well. The only relief that I had was to sleep through every trip. Though I'm not quite sure, I suspect that it had to do with my vision. As a teen, I noticed that the car sickness stopped, when I started wearing glasses. You might want to suggest that your nephew get his eyes checked. Also, I know that there is a medication out there called Dramamine (spelling?). I think that medication should be the absolute last resort when it comes to most issues with children, however, you might suggest that the parents consult their pediatrician about that or any other meds that might provide relief to your nephew. Good luck and GOD bless (-:

Dramamine. They make an orange flavored chewable. If your little one doesn't like orange, crush it between two spoons and add a little jam. :D

I'm a mother of 4 (ages 3 to 17)and I was one of those childrn that got car/motion sickness just be being in the general area of a vehicle (car, plane, boat). This is what finally worked for me (since the 70's, yikes..I'm telling my age) and I continue to use it for myself and my children when ever necessary.

It is lemon, all natural and safe. Before we go on trips I cut a lemon into wedges and place in a plastic baggie. At the first sign that someone is becoming queezy I hand them a wedge. The scent alone starts to alleviate the symptoms and if not I have them eat the lemon (not the peel - smile). Another quick remedy is peppermint, I always have 1-2 peppermint candies or gum stashed in my purse to help settle upset stomachs. Best of luck and I hope this helped. Blessings, N. C. :)

My ds got carsick too. He can't even stand hills or too many curves.

Our best remedies were to not feed him or feed him very lightly--small snacks to ward off hunger.

go at nap time or night time when he would sleep.

keep him busy so he is not thinking about it.

And my SIL has her kids look only out the front window--it seems to help but my kid needed more than that. ;-)

For him it is the motion itself, for her it seemed to be the looking out the side windows and a vision vs. orientation thing...like when you get dizzy but nothing is really moving.

Good luck

Has she tried ginger? You can get powdered caplets in the grocery store with the vitamins. Pull them apart and use a little at a time.

I would try chewable dramamine. I would give that to my son around that age when we would travel by plane just to get him to sleep a bit. I would give him 1/4 to 1/2 a tablet.

I have a brother who is an MD and his son also gets car sick. On long rides they give him benedryill to let him sleep and keep him from vomitting. He says that it is much less stressfull for everyone envolved. They wait until he starts to get sick to give it to him though so he is awake for some of the ride. Since your nephew is three he'll be able to take the fast melt kind that looks and tastes like a piece of candy. Either half the pill or all of it.
Hope that helps.

Wear him out before getting into the car. This way he might sleep. You can also try having him sit by the window with it down, air in the face seams to help. Dr.'s do have some stuff that works, but it does'nt work for all people. There is also a wrist band that can help keep down the nasiated feeling.
KayS. - A 45yr old with servier motion sickness, meds don't help. The wrist band let me enjoy most of a 7 day cruise. Tell your sister good luck.

When my son was little he had car sickness and my pediatrician prescribed a very mild dose of Phenegran but now you can get anti nausea medication over the counter. The one I have right now is a generic and it says children 2 - 12 gets 1-2 teaspoons. I think one of the name brands is Emetrol. Hope that helps.

I have car sickness, & now my son is having it. He's 3, & his doc said that I can't give him anything for it until he's 10 or 12.

We keep a blanket in the car at all times, so I can throw over him if he needs to vomit. I make sure we have snacks in the car, & when his stomach starts becoming upset, we roll down the windows or throw on the AC until it calms down. Heat is a major trigger. He rarely vomits in the car now. Good luck!!

Two ideas for motion sickness/nausea:
1)There's a little bracelet you can buy. I've seen it at Babies R Us, but you can probably ask at any maternity/baby store.
It puts light pressure on the wrist, and I've seen it mentioned in lots of magazines as effective.
2)If your nephew is tolerant of spicy food (like my goddaughter, but unlike my kids or most kids), you could try candied ginger. I've seen it in Hispanic grocery stores and health food stores, and it helped some during my pregnancies.

My son (who is now 3) had a prob with this when he was an infant up till about 1 years old. We would NOT give him any milk before the ride and if he needed to drink it, it would be very little at a time. Since her son is 3 he prob does not need to drink that much liquid during the trip.
We would also make frequent stops to avoid him throwing up. And when he did eat, it would be dry foods such as gerber snacks...but nothing heavy. Tell her to stop and eat instead of eating in the car. I found that when we would stop at McDonalds and he would eat and play it off..it helped a lot! Also the doc recommended a little Benedryl before the ride...he sd this calms down their system and helps them to relax. Also check out your nearest Health Food store. They have tons of natural meds that he could take and it wouldn't hurt him to give a lot of it. Most of the people that work there are very educated in their products as well. Good luck!

I know there are seasickness patches she can give him, and I'm pretty sure they're approved for children. She might need to call her pediatrician to see if they can provide her with any free samples or a prescription. Side effects include drowsiness, and that might not be a bad thing.

As a child I used to get sick from driving up into the mountains to ski. The combination of the scenery and the oxygen lessening used to make me incredibly queasy, so my mom would give me Dramamine pills to swallow. At three, he might not be ready to swallow pills. I'd try the patch, unless he has any allergies to adhesives.

If she wants to try non-medicinal treatment she could get some acupressure wrist bands. I don't know much about them, but I've heard they work for some people.

Good luck!

My 3 (at the time) and now 4 year old, daughter gets motion sickness as well. The doctor told me to give her Benadryl, and we also use the Sea-Band Wristbands. Here is there link. http://www.sea-band.com/

These things work GREAT! You can also do Dramamine, but it doesn't come in a kid pill/candy type application. It tastes' awful and if they find it, they will get MAD! LOL

Good Luck, because motion sickness is the worst!

my daughter is 3 and has the same problem, our dr said recently that we could not give her any drugs for it. Someone on here sugested Sea-band, it is bracelets/wrist bands that the child wears. I bought it CVS for just under $11.00. We tried it on my daughter this past weekend and it seamed to help. She only complained once about her tummy and I pulled over to adjust her bracelets an we were off again, not another word from her about it. It was a 3 1/2 hour drive there on Friday and the same on Sunday back. It does not make her sleepy, it works on pressure points.
Good luck!

My son gets car sick every time we go anywhere. I have to give him dramimine. I get the flavored tablets, and crush them up, and give him a drink to wash it down. I have talked to his doctors, and they said that is fine. I have tried the sea-bands, good luck with keeping that on his wrist. I have a "barf" bag, bowl with a lid, towels, wet wipes, extra clothes, lysol, and fabreeze all in my car. Just make sure you give it to him about and hour before you leave. This is part of our daily life, and he loves going for rides. He will be 3 in May. Good luck to you.

She can try Sea Bands. They use acupressure to relieve motion sickness. Also, have her speak with her son's pedi -- she should be able to use Benadryl as well.

Mythbusters on Discovery Channel tested out a bunch of motion sickness remedies and found ginger pills to be the most effective. Also, crack a window in the car to let in fresh air.

There are natural ginger candies and things that he might be willing to eat that would probably have a similar result.
