I had something similar happen recently after having a crown put in. My dentist said that I may have bruised a spot in between my jaw and skull. He had me put moist heat on it for 20 minutes twice a day, and after a couple of weeks the pain is gone! I can still hear a clicking when I yawn, but that was always there.

Your dentist said that I was acceptable for you to _never_ be able to open your mouth again? Get a new dentist.

Apply heat and take some ibuprofen. You can keep the heat on as long as it is comfortable. Stick with soft foods for now and it should clear up in a day or so, full range of motion will come back slowly, don't force it. Be patient, your connective tissues and muscles were probably strained/sprained during the procedure, and you just have to let them heal and get back to normal.

You may NEVER be able to open your mouth again?! Dear Lord, you need to find another dentist. And then maybe a lawyer.

Hi M.,
I suggest you contact the dentist that pulled your teeth and inquire if this is to be expected during recovery. I had my wisdom teeth pulled when I was a teenager and I don't recall not being able to open my mouth. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Peace,
J.

You may still have some swelling in there, or possibly an infection. Absesses can make it difficult to open the mouth. Another possibility is TMJ, a problem in the jaw joint caused by muscular issues, usually associated with tension. In either case, consult your dentist or oral surgeon.

You need to call you Dr. I had mine taken out Monday and my Dr told me if I had any pain at all after a few days to call. I'm actually calling today b/c I am having pretty bad pain. He said a common issue is dry sockets which I think I have but yours sounds far worse. My jaw is still sore but I can open my mouth. There are nerves that they can hit when they take them out so you definitely want to get in and see the Dr.

Good luck! I hope you get some relief soon!

I had the opposite problem, I couldn't open my mouth before I had my wisdom teeth pulled and was able too after. I would call the dentist right away. There may be some floating pieces in there.

Good luck!

When I had my wisdom teeth out, my face swelled so much I looked like a pumpkin and I couldn't open or completely close my mouth for about 3 days. A week seems far too long to have that kind of problem. I would contact the dentist or oral surgeon that removed them for a follow up.

I had a botched wisdom tooth job (the guy couldn't get it out so he sewed it back under the gum). My face totally swelled up softball size on that side. I couldn't open my mouth all the way for several months. It did go away but it sounds like your doc is quack just like mine was. I switched and a new doc got the tooth out with no swelling and no stiffness as a result. Good luck!
