Can't Get 16 Month Old to Drink Milk from Sippie.

A couple of weeks ago, I removed the bottle from my 16 month old's repertoire of feeding utensils! He only gets it at night before bed now with about 5 or 6 oz of milk. He has used a sippie for water and juice since he was 10 months old (a sippie with a straw that is, he didn't seem to like the regular sippie cups). I also still nurse him at nap time, bedtime, and when he wakes up.

He WILL NOT drink milk from a sippie, a straw cup, and maybe a little from an open mouthed cup, but that's it. He won't settle down to nurse during the day (stopped doing that when he was about 8 months so we moved at that point to nursing at sleep times). I've tried mixing BM with cow's, straight cow's and even straight BM (but not much because it's like gold and I don't want to waste 4 - 6 oz of it like this!). So he's dropped from 16 to 18 oz of milk during the day down to 10-12 oz if I'm lucky (I'm obviously estimating for the nursing part!). He is stubborn stubborn stubborn about not taking milk like this. His caloric intake is down quite a bit and his weight seems to be holding steady. No movement up and maybe even a little bit of loss.

The weird part is that the reason that I decided to end it to start with was because he was teething really badly (still is) and was refusing the bottle anyway. What should I do?

What can I do next?

well i am not sure how BM works, did not breast feed, but with my daughter i started taking her off formula when she was 10 1/2 months, she also ate big people food, but i started with 2oz cow milk and 6 oz formula, then decreased the formula till it was all cows milk, and when it was all cows milk on her first bday, i threw away all bottles in the house, and she got a normal sippy. because if bottles are out of sight they are out of mind, and i did not give in, she had to use the sippy. just like potty training when the time came and she was ready all diapers were gone, and only normal undies.

good luck

Nurse him as often as you feel comfortable with. Cow's breastmilk isn't really necessary for a human to consume - - espeically if it's calcium and vit D that is your main reason for offering it. He'll get enough packed nutrition from your breastmilk, yogurts and cheeses - along with the other solids he eats.

Have you thought that the cow's milk might be upsetting his stomach and that he associates the cup with the discomfort? If he was drinking water from it...That is the only thing I can think of. I wouldn't worry about his weight so much. If he is eating food, then you can always give more (healthy) calories that way. As long as he is getting water, so that he is no getting dehydrated. GOOD LUCK!

As long as he's getting enough fluid, I'd just make sure he's getting his calcium and vitamin D from other foods etc. Sounds quite common to me, but he's still getting milk/BM and if he's not losing weight, just keep trying. Some kids just don't like milk any other way, but someday my suprise you.

My son would drink cows milk all day from a bottle but never from a sippy cup. I asked my ped about it and she told me to mix in a small amount of Hershey's Choc. She said she'd rather him have choc milk then no milk. It worked like a charm, why wouldn't it right! He is almost 3 now and still drinks choc milk instead of reg. We don't put too much in just enough to add some flavor. At first I was worried about the extra sugar but thats what he has had for 2 years now and he is still skinny as a bean poll and hasn't had any problems. My daughter who just turned one has no problems drinking reg milk from a sippy cup. She's a little chunk! hehe I think all kids are different and you just gotta make exceptions to get them where they need to be (off the bottle) Good luck!!
