Can I Waitress Without Any Waitress Experience?

I currently work part time (in an office), but I want to quit to find night/evening work because my babysitter that watches my kids 2 days a week is no longer available. I think my best option is waitress; however, I have NO waitressing experience. I've talked to a few people, but most people tell me not to bother because most places only hire experienced staff. How can I become experienced if I can't get a job that will provide the experience?

What can I do next?

I'm not sure if they are hiring, but the Karas family (owners of The Village Squire, Alexanders, and Rookies)hires people without experience. I worked with them for many, many, years and my husband now works for them. They are an amazing family to work for. I would definitely suggest working at a non-corporate restaurant. There is less change in management making it easier to go to work, do your job, make your money and be happy.

If you can deal with all kinds of people you can do it! I never waitressed before I started my present job and now I have been there for 6 years! The restaurant I work for is also one of the nicest in town. I have trained a lot of our newbies and you would be suprised on how little experience some of them have. You have to be ready for all types of people because they will push your nerves sometimes but just say it with a smile and thank God you don't have to go home with those crabby ones! I like waitressing because they work around my schedule and I can easily make about $300 on a decent weekend.( I usually work on my husbands days off, and my mom watches the boys one day a week). I say if you're up for it go for it. I am glad I did.

Some restaurants won't hire without experience, but not all of them. You can't expect to get a job at an expensive/high end restaurant without experience. However, places like Baker's Square, Denny's, etc... probably will hire you if you have a decent personality, clean, have a good work history, etc... I was hired at a Baker's Square many years ago without any experience. I got tested on their menu and started with just taking orders from just a couple of tables at a time. Actually, I think I "followed" another server for a couple of days. I didn't get to keep the tips on those 2 or 3 days, but after that I had my own station and kept the tips. Then, they let me have more tables as I got better handling all the orders. (My station size grew and soon I had the same amount of tables as the other servers.) After a year, I went on to work at a busy family owned pancake type restaurant. I made more in tips there. The owners at this place hired servers without experience too. The money I made waitressing sure helped me financially during my college years.

You absolutely can waitress somewhere without experience. I worked in two restaurants when I was in college and had zero experience. Both places I worked for provided good training in the beginning before just letting me loose with customers. Now, you probably aren't going to walk right into Gibson's and land a job but you could definitely try to chain sit-down place like Applebees, Fridays, or something like that. Be prepared for exhausting work - it was something I gladly did when I was 20 and 21, but no way on earth could I do it now. You'll be on your feet, have to deal with customers (both pleasant and ridiculously demanding), and put up with a lot of stress.

Hi, I had a different part-time job, but found that in medical records, I wasn't making enough to pay the babysitter. So, I am now waitressing Thursday through Sunday evening. I only need to get a babysitter for a couple hours a week for either Thursday or Friday when my husband can't get home by 4:30. He only has to come home early one day a week, which he doesn't mind because he also works Saturday mornings. Anyways, I work at Connies, which has a full bar and full menu. I had experience, but it was from 15 years ago. Some of the people they have don't have experience, but they have full paid training, which is great. They have you follow another server for a few days, then start by giving you a small two table section and build it up as you are more comfortable. The tips are okay, I average $###-###-#### per month and I've just been doing it for a couple of months. But you have to have the type of personality, when you have a 6 year old boy scream at the top of his lungs three times, " I want more milk now", that you just tell yourself that your lucky to only have to wait on him for one dinner and just say, coming right up. You'll get some crabby people, but if you are attentive, you can help people enjoy their evening out, which is nice. I see a couple of people have suggested Denny's to start out at, but I'd suggest a restaurant with a bar because you will make a lot more.

That is not true, considering most waitstaff these days a teenagers. I know that there are alot of places that hire with no experience, just start checking around and be honest with them. Everyone has to start somewhere. try the chains like Applebees, Chilis, IHop ect.
