Just don't over do it. I would think a glass of something would be fine. I know I had several glasses of wine on a couple of different occasions before I found out I was pregnant and my daughter is just fine. I have heard that sometimes when you get so uptight with rules to try to get pregnant a lot of my friends had no luck, the second they stopped trying it happens. Not to mention sometimes its that glass of something that gets us pregnant. :-) Good luck.

My advice is no. Its not safe and if you are trying to conceive you might as well get used to abstaining since you will be eventually anyway.

My OBGYN told me to not act pregnant until you are (meaning you know) you are pregnant. I didn't believe her for 2 years while trying to get pregnant, and I didn't drink caffeine or alcohol for 2 years until I was completely bitter and angry and gave up, thinking I couldn't get pregnant. Went back to my normal life and was happy and that's when I got pregnant. She is a very healthy little one year old. I say drink with your friends until you get a possitive test.

It's much more important that you start taking your vitamins before you get pregnant than it is to cut out alcohol completely. I wouldn't overdo it if you think you could be pregnant but don't have a positive test yet. And if you have tried for a while to concieve and it isn't working, I would recommend cutting out the alcohol, because it can make it harder to conceive. But you haven't even been trying for a full cycle yet, so I wouldn't worry about that yet. The best way to get pregnant for most people is to not stress out too much about it and to be laid back. So enjoy a girls night out or a date with hubby, just dont get trashed every few days, you should be fine.

it's actually safer to drink WHILE you are solidly pregnant (3-9 months) than in that first trimester. Ther *worst* time to drink as far as birth defects go is during the first 2 weeks of gestation, before most women know that they're pregnant.

One of life's ironies.

Well, you know that you may be pregnant... you could go get a blood test to be sure, it could show up by now. That might put your mind at ease. A drink would certainly help you relax if you aren't pregnant since you seem to be stressed about not being pregnant yet. I wouldn't get drunk though, maybe one or two. Our bodies to protect little embyo's in the beginning weeks of pregnancy before we know we are pregnant but if you think you might be, you might as well treat your body like you are right?
Good luck and hope you get a + sign soon!

I think the surest way to make sure you're pregnant is to go out for drinks out after a negative pregnancy test :) (it worked for me twice!). I think if it's in moderation it's fine!

I would also suggest, taking pre-natal vitamins already, if you are not doing so. Even when trying to conceive, it is recommended. That is what my OB/GYN told me.
And as always, go by your ovulation symptoms... or track it. That is when you can conceive.

all the best,
Susan

Typically, one would not want to drink while trying to conceive (that 'rule' includes your partner as well). However, people do it all the time (sometimes on accident - the 'oh, didn't know I was pregnant and I went out and partied' kind of thing) and their kids often come out just fine. I also don't think a single glass of wine or a beer is going to be a problem, but I wouldn't suggest more than that. The most crucial time for baby development is the first trimester of pregnancy. Once you hit the 2nd or better yet wait until the 3rd (just to be safe), then it's actually okay (based on what I've read and from what many doctors will tell you) to go back to an 'occasional' glass of wine or a beer again. Unfortunately, you'll have to do that in the privacy of your home, since many restaurants would frown on serving an 8 month pregnant women a drink.

My Dr told me that in the first couple weeks of being pregnant drinking alcohol won't hurt the baby at all. But of course once you find out you are pregnant quit.

Hello! Sounds like if you just took a negative pregnancy test, then you should be OK to drink if you want. I think most people, including O.B.'s, would agree that staying away from alcohol, etc. when trying to conceive is a very good idea. However, if there is some sort of special occasion going on- then sounds like you are OK. Just probably not make it a consistent thing.

I was on muscle relaxers and pain meds (bad sledding accident and hurt my back! I now CRINGE at the thought of my kids going sledding lol)- and then the next week had some drinks at my husband's work holiday party and then.....found out I was pregnant! I was considered 6 weeks pregnant when I found out. (We were not "active trying" we were actually on a "break" b/c we had previously been trying for about 11 months and I was getting frustrated.) My Dr. assured me everything was perfectly fine!! And she was right- I now have a healthy 6 yr old. Again, if I was "trying"- would I have drank? Maybe just for the holiday party if I had taken a pregnancy test beforehand. But sometimes life just happens! (lol) My Dr. said our bodies are set up to protect the embryo purposely that way- very limited effect as to our consumption of things in the first few weeks of "pregnancy" - or what we call: the time before we realize we are pregnant! Remember: we are actually considered THREE weeks pregnant at the time of conception! The egg dropping is the beginning of pregnancy- the beginning of our period is part of pregnancy! That is why pregnancy calendar and Dr.'s use the first date of our last period to figure out the due date.

In this same note, I would like to comment to Riley J: please realize this is not true! It is WAY more harmful to drink while actually pregnant than before you realize it. Again, we are usually 4 or 5 or even 6 weeks (if you are irregular like me) when women find out...Week Three of pregnancy is actually the embryo's first week of development. Please DO NOT think it is safer to drink at 3-9 months! As soon as a women finds out she is pregnant that is when alcohol should be abstained from.

I have always been told that you are not to drink if you are trying to conceive. All three of my kids were surprises and I did have some drinks in my early weeks of pregnancy when I didn't know that I was and they all turned out just fine.

If I were you, I just wouldn't do it. Too risky.

Just don't do it. You could be pregnant. How would you feel if something WERE to be wrong with your baby? You would always wish you hadn't taken that drink. If you are TRYING and WANT to be pregnant...is it worth it?

While we all know that alcohol can adversely affect a pregnancy, no one KNOWS exactly when the effects happen (short of continuous drinking throughout pregnancy)...there isn't a way to do a controlled study. All we know comes from anecdotal evidence.

It isn't necessary to drink.

Alcohol is a toxin to the body. Beer has the highest levels of the heavy metal -aluminum of all ingestible food sources. Is it any wonder that beer drinkers are coming down with alzheimers in record numbers? All alcohol contains heavy metals, some more than one kind of metal.

Heavy metals attach themselves to your mineral receptors, and block them so that you cannot absorb those minerals anymore. They affect the nervous system, the endocrine system, the vascular system. Heavy metals have been implicated in the high amounts of autism now prevalent.

Acohol goes right into the blood in high concentrations. The brain needs ample amounts of blood at al times and so is vunerable to damage. Your baby's brain is no different and has the same blood volumn requirement. Your blood feeds your baby via the umbilical cord.

If you MUST drink- get the book "taking Charge Of Your Fertility" and track your ovulation cycles, so that you cn keep your fertile period clear of alcohol. This will allow you to drink during non fertile periods and avoid poisoning a baby.

Nope. Alcohol affects the development of a fetus from very early on and all the way through. Fetal Alcohol Syndrom can be a very serious birth defect and it is very preventable. The first 8 weeks of development are very significant for a fetus and it is especially vulnerable to alcohol during that time.

Second, alcohol can potentially affect your ability to get pregnant.

So I would say 0 alcohol at this point. Just to be safe.

If you're not really ready to give up the idea of social drinking with buddies I'd say wait a while to get pregnant. You should be taking pre-natals and doing everything you can to make your body the best for a baby. Once you're pregnant the rest of your life will change. That change is wonderful- believe me- but if there are still things you'd like to do for yourself then do them before you have kiddos. Your decisions will no longer be your own- they boil down to "what's best for my kid?" Just my thoughts :) good luck!

The choice is really yours, if it has been at least three weeks since your last epriod then of course there is a chance you are pregnant and the test has not picked up on it yet. I found out I was pregnant three weeks after my last priod (i week before my period was due..not common). I knwo plenty oif people that has had a night out on the town before their period was due and only 1-5 days later found out they were pregnant and babies are just find. I know I had a couple of drinks when I was pregnant with my daughter and I found out five days before my period was due. But really that early into it you are really not pregnant. At about three weeks most likey the embryo is just stated to implant to your utereus. Your choice. A friend got really really drunk and was smoking and a week alter found out she was pregnant.

If you are trying to conceive and in the middle of a cycle I say, WHY RISK IT???

It is NEVER "SAFE" to drink while pregnant. Whether YOU know if you are or not....... A positive test doesn't usually show until the expected day of your period (or a couple days before with some tests.....)

If you are trying to conceive it is not safe to drink at anytime. I am sure your test came up Negitive because 2 weeks and 3 days is not long enough to show a possitive pregnance test if you are going off of your last period. Depending on your cycle now is about the time you would be concieving so you might want to stay home instead.
