Can Disposable Diapers Burn a Baby's Skin?

With my first, that happened to us, too. I simply would not use disposables again after that. It seemed to happen with nearly every brand of disposables we tried, with some being worse than others, but strange things happening with every one of them, and no definite data about what happens to their reproductive organs with all those strange things next to their skins for such a long time when they are developing so much and so fast?

So, we switched to cloth. We like the Mother-ease cloth diapers, the one-size (www.mother-ease.com). I am now using them on my 4th little one, and find diaper rashes an easy thing to deal with. When we used disposables, the children would nearly constantly have a diaper rash and issues from the diapers. With cloth, the rashes, when they get them, are short-lived.

Try either cloth, which as someone else mentioned are pretty awesome these days, or a disposable such as Seventh Generation, that are more environmentally friendly and don't contain the gel.

Diapers are made of a lot of unnatural ingredients that can definitely cause allergic reactions. My daughter gets a rash every time we put her in certain brands of diapers. Most of the time we use cloth diapers and don't have that problem.

She could be allergic to certain brands of diapers. My daughter was allergic to every diaper except for Luvs. Keep trying until you find one that works. Good luck! :)

She could have sensitive skin and this may just be a reaction to a "normal" diaper. I have a friend who finally had to switch to the Seventh Generation brand diapers. They're more environmentally friendly than the typical Huggies/Pampers/Luvs brands and they also are chlorine-free. My daughter wears Huggies with no problems but some kids' skin is just more sensitive than others.

Just a thought - my son had a really loose stool that started to leak out of the leg hole and it caused chafing in the matter of minutes it takes to convince him that he needs a fresh diaper. He had two blisters, one was almost dime size.

My son had a "burst" diaper several times and NEVER had an issue like you describe. I think some of the other ladies are right, you have a rash or yeast infection of some kind or an allergic reaction and not a burn. Good luck!

My daughter is allergic to Huggies brand and can tollerate the Costco Kirkland brand diapers. She gets a diaper rash that looks like she was burned if I use Huggies on her. I am so irritated that the next child we have will be cloth diapered. My is so close to being potty trained and we found out that it was the diapers a couple of months a go, so I have not invested in cloth.

More than anything, it's probably just diaper rash from having a diaper that full on for as long as she did. My kids did that every once in awhile and if it was over-wet, then my daughter (she has really sensitive skin) would get diaper rash. I would suggest putting some A&D diaper rash cream on it (I've found that A&D works better than any other diaper rash cream) and keep an eye on it.

Yes they definetly can!! In my opinion Huggies are the worst!! All my children had the most severe diaper rash from Huggies and yes I also found that "gel"on their skin. I reluctantly tried them again only because I had recieved dipers as gifts and who doesn't want to save $$$? Next time I will donate them to a shelter for sure. I also discovered that Papmers swithed their linings and I found that "gel" again. usually when the diper was a bit used. I love the Kirkland brand diapers and wipes have never had a problem since.

Hi L. - I don't know much about the diaper gel and burns but I wanted to tell you to keep an eye on the welt since one of my sons developed a staph infection that started out like that and got progressively worse in a very short time. We caught it before it got too bad so he didn't need to be hospitalized (thankfully) but those infections can take off and get really painful. So my advice in that regard is keep an eye on the welt and if it gets bigger or more develop, make an appt to see your ped asap to rule out staph.

I suppose if the babies skin is real sensitive but I would think it would be in all the places it touched not just in that one spot getting bigger. I have that happen to a couple of my kids and nothing like that has happened. Maybe the welt is something different.

That sensitive baby skin can have a reaction from the slightest irritant. I would recommend using a little diaper cream, and it should clear up rather quickly.

I'm not sure it can cause a burn, but I do know that sometimes it causes a reaction in the skin. We've had that happen before and it just went away on its own.

Baby's skin is delicate so just like certain brands of diapers may break them out, so might the gel stuff.

Yes they can. A friend of mines son had a horrible reaction to disposables. They quickly switched over to cloth and have had no issues. We also used cloth and it was super easy. Sounds like she has sensitive skin and possibly even has developed a yeast problem. I'd use monistat on it and see if that helps and maybe leave the diaper off today as much as you can or use cloth or thick training pants if you have them when you're at home for a couple of days.

Hi L., sorry about what happened! I would certainly try a different brand of diapers. Recommend you give her a bath, dry her well and and put diaper ointment on. The gel should not have caused the welt. It's the same stuff that teachers use to make "snow" in the classroom. Although it could be possible that your daughter had an allergic reaction to the gel. All three of my kids have had the gel come out on them at some point or another, and they never had a problem with it.

It sounds more likely that she has a spot of diaper rash from the extra wetness. Use diaper cream on the area and let air get at it for a few hours. If it doesn't clear up in a day or two, call your peditrician to check it out.

It is definitely not unheard of for a reaction such as this to occur when their fragile skin comes in contact with the gel. Some kids don't have a reaction but a lot do.

I have to agree with the other moms, It could be an allergic reaction. When I worked in Daycare, we had a little boy who was allergic to disposable diapers. Call and ask your doctor to be sure.

It might (and this is a slim chance), be that she has too much ammonia in her urine, and having it on her skin for a prolonged period (while she was sleeping) caused a bad rash. All in all, I'd check with the doc before putting unconventional creams on it, in case of bad reactions.
