Can Anyone Just Create a Fake Facebook Acct About You?

I was at my cousins wedding this past weekend and of course family was there. Everyone kept saying how they were disappointed that they are just now meeting my 7 month old and that I should be on Facebook so they can see pictures of my kids. I don't want a Facebook acct and I don't want my kids plastered all over the interenet. And I don't care how many people will say "there are private settings". If I don't want to do it then that should be the final answer, right?

Well, my 1 cousin kept taking pics of my kids and trying to take pics of me and she kept joking that they were all just going to make a fake acct of me and then when people took pics or saw my kids they would take pics and add to this fake acct. Can they really do that? I really hope not.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

These family members only live 20 mins from me and I even stated to them if they wanted to see my kids they can call and we can meet up.

Well, yes...they can. Anyone can create anything. There is no PROOF of identity on social networking sites. However, you can also report them to facebook and get it taken down...should they do something that silly.

I am not a Facebooker, for the same reasons ... but my understanding is that all you need is an email acct and a password.

Yes they can BUT it should be fairly easy to get shut down, depending on where you live.

-Search for the name
-Hover over the profile picture (or lack thereof)
-Look at the bottom left of the page for www.facebook.com/profile.php?=idXXXXXXXXXXXX
-Write down the numbers (I put Xs in above)
-Call the police and let them know either that A) someone is harassing you on Facebook or B) someone has stolen your virtual identity
-If this is indeed a case of harassment or stolen virtual identity, then the police have an obligation to subpoena Facebook to get the information
-Every Facebook account has to be opened with an e-mail address, so the police will get the address
-Every e-mail address is trackable through an ISP. This is how law enforcement agents are able to figure out who made the account (or, at least, who 'owns' or is responsible for the internet account)

That ought to fix the problem.

YES you can create a facebook page for anybody or thing. Now if they do create one for you, you can e-mail facebook and report that it is a fake account or you did not set it up and then facebook can remove it.

There are private settings BUT it is your choice, if you do not want one that is the final decision. Your family should respect that. For those family members that want to know what is going on more ask if they would like to start a snail mail exchange. You write a little about what is going on, send a picture or two and they do the same.

Yes they can. Kids do this to each other all the time. If someone sets up a fake account about you, you can contact FB and have the account removed.

That said, I doubt that your family would do that - it's the kind of things kids to do get back at each other and I would hope that your family is a little more respectful than that.

They can try to create it, but if you see it you can contact Facebook and ask them to take it down. However, all these relatives who took pictures of your kids can easily put it on THEIR FB pages for everyone to see, so you might want to check with them to make sure they aren't doing that if you don't want your kids' pictures online.

I suppose they could, but I think she was probably joking. BUT....I would be sure to make it very clear to her that you DO NOT want pictures of your kids on the internet. And I would go on and check her page. If she does put pictures of them on there, you can report it. The only thing is - if she has her page set to private - you will not be able to see if she has pictures of your kids on there. My SIL put pics of my kids on her page and it started a big ol' family fued when I asked her to take them down. Then she un-friended me.....so now I have no way to tell if she has pics of them on her pages. It pisses me off......

Sure, anyone can post a fake identity, to sign up for an account.

Or, contact Face Book and ask them.

Your cousin, is way out of line.

Those are your kids.
But it just shows, that anyone can post pictures/photos of minor age children, without consent. "They" took the photos of your kids, and how or where they post them, online, is up for grabs.
And then, the child will have an internet history of them, already.

unfortunately - ANYONE can create a FB account with ANY name given....they just have to have a valid e-mail address...

Inbox me your name and I'll search on FB for you to see if one is out there.

They can't create one FOR you, but they can create one OF you - pics of you, your name, etc. But it wouldn't be your account. They need to respect your wishes. I don't put my kid on facebook, and I think we have some privacy stuff on youtube so only family can see him. It's pretty annoying that they won't listen to you.

Probably not.

Although the comment was probably made in jest, it was pretty disrespectful, especially knowing your feelings about having your child's picture online.

You can simply report the page and say it is impersonation or false. They will remove it.... they should remove it...

I agree, I don't like to see kids pics online. I belong to a dating site and you would be amazed at howmany people post pics of their kids and grandkids on their profile.
I don't think anyone can create a facebook page for you but they can post pics of you and your kids on their page.

At the high school where I teach, last year a student got a teacher's picture off of the school website and used the picture and the teacher's name to create a facebook page. Then started posting all kinds of horrible, inappropriate things about the teacher, and a couple of other students started posting things too. This was a generally well-liked teacher, so when other students found out they let the teacher know. Lawyers had to get involved because of it being a teacher/student public incident. Facebook did shut down the page, but it took awhile. It was a mess.

I can't speak to how easy it is to create a fake FB account, but you could get around this, or dull their complaints, by taking pictures and sending them by email. I have relatives that aren't on Facebook, and that's what they do. :)
