Can a Doctor Accidentally Strip Your Membranes?

I am almost 32 weeks pregnant and I went to the hospital because I have been having contractions the last 3 days and I was 50% effaced. The nurse did a pelvic exam and found out I am a fingertip dilated. But as she took her hand out because she had to reach really far there was a whole lot of blood on her glove, the entire glove was covered in it. She said oh, your gonna bleed. Well, I did start to bleed lots of bright red blood and blood clots. It's now been 5 hours and I'm still bleeding the same but haven't seen anymore clots. Do you think this is normal? Can a doctor accidentally strip your membranes when they do an exam? I am very worried about this bleeding, I have spotted after wards but nothing like this!

What can I do next?

I had my membranes intentionally stripped by my midwife in order to induce labor (it worked :) However, I don't remember any bleeding, definitely NOT like you're describing. Call the Dr.!

THis does not sound normal. I would call your ob or go to the hospital. Not to alarm you but I had that happen when I was pregant with my daughter. I delivered her early. She is fine in fact she is extremely bright kindergartener. I have not heard them accidently stripping the memberane but if you are slightly dehydrated you can bleed. The blood vessels are closer to the surface of the skin and any slight thing can cause bleeding but to me it sounds like it is more than normal.

I don't know what that, but I sure would be getting checked out. That sounds a little scary to me and then some.

Believe me you would know if they did that. They have to take their hand and "twirl" it around inside to strip them and it's usually a little uncomfortable and they definitely wouldn't even remotely come close to doing that at 32 weeks. I would probably call your doc just to make sure. Usually you're not going to bleed that long or heavy. Are you still feeling contractions, if so you could possibly be dilating more and you definitely want to call your doc. If the bleeding has slowed you're fine.

If you are worried, call your doctor! Don't come here for advice, it's your body and your baby. Check with your doctor. I had something similiar happen to me, but mine was light bleeding and everything turned out fine. good luck and demand to get rechecked if you are still worried.

Doesn't sound right to be bleeding this long from an exam. I would call your MD and get seen right away. I don't think stripping of the membranes should cause bleeding for this long. Doesn't sound right.

I am no expert, but I dont think you can accidentally strip your membranes. Some bleeding after an exam is pretty normal, but I get the feeling you are bleeding more than what would be normal. Stripping your membranes is VERY uncomfortable and caused me to cramp when I had it done, but I never had more bleeding than a panty liner and no clotting. I would definately give your OB a call first thing. I know every pregnancy is different and this could be your normal, but only your OB is going to be able to really set your mind at ease.

I sure hope you called your doctor to be seen right away! This happened to me and I had to have an emergency C-section at 33 weeks because the placenta had detached. I don't think heavy bleeding is normal in any way!!

Bleeding a lot is not a good sign. I would call the doctor right away! If your placenta is low lying the person checking you could have caused some disrupption to it and the baby may be in danger. I would want to get seen right away!

Yes. The doctor can easily strip your membranes. One asked me if I wanted them to when I got to full term with my daughter to help induce labor.

Regardless, you still have a LONG time left in your pregnancy, and this isn't normal. I'd call the OB/GYN immediately to make sure you're OK and your baby is OK. DON'T WAIT!!!!
