Calcium Supplement for Toddler

We have taken my son off milk completely (the pediatrician thinks he may be allergic - he's having skin/constipation issues) and are supposed to be giving him almond or rice milk. Well we can't get him to drink either - I've tried everything - all the different flavors, adding strawberry Quick, have offered it to him with a straw, etc). Just as an FYI - he used to get YoBaby drinkable yogurt in the morning and a cup of milk at night. I'm trying to offer other calcium rich foods such as broccoli and orange juice - he wants no part of that either. So - does anyone have any suggestions to get him to eat/drink or can anyone recommend a good calcium supplement for kids? It's been a little over a week and I am worried that he's not getting the calcium he needs.

What can I do next?

Hello S.,

try www.nomilk.com for ideas. they have links to recipes, etc. you might not agree with everthing that's posted, but you're looking for food ideas and not for opinions, right?

Here is another link:
Calcium in the Vegan Diet
http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/calcium.htm

also, you may want to try a different brand of rice milk. I can't stand the ones w/ safflower oil in it (later I found out that I'm allergic to ragweeds...and safflower is a ragweed)
I got a soymilk making machine and I use it to make almond milk because it has the closest consistency to cow milk and it works well for cooking. almond milk can be heavy on the stomach -- I know I make it a bit too strong so I use it for cooking.

Here is an excellent link:

The company that makes the kids gummy vites (I buy them at Costco) also has a calcium product. You may need to snip them into smaller pieces for your son - although I think they are soft enough and small enough to not be a choking hazard. These vitamins do not have artificial colors or flavors like some of the other do and they're significantly cheaper than the equivalent brands and Sprouts and Whole Foods (I think they're made by the same company as many store brands are). There are also a variety of liquid ones, but I have not had much luck with getting my kids to try those other than an orange flavored one made by this company:

But, only my older son would take it, so I finally just gave in to the gummy vites.

We had to do this with 2 of my kiddos as well. Target has "Lil Critters" brand calcium gummies now (I searched hi and low 3 years ago and there were none at that time). They are good too, I've tried them! 2 gummies = 5oz milk I think Babies R Us has them too now as well. I know Target does though. I heard Costco has a giant bottle too!

Have you tried the Calcium chews that they have at the drug/grocery stores. They are pretty yummy (like candy) and are a good source of Calcium.

Fruit flavored tums, my sister used to have to eat 4 or 5 a day. She was also allergic to milk.

Also, he should be able to still have any milk that is cooked or processed such as cheese, yogurt, cooked pudding (not instant), etc.

we have had similar issues w/ my 18 month old. since he was 6 weeks old he's had horrible eczema. we are currently taking him to a holistic doctor who is treating him w/ acupressure - which changed my 5 year old daughters life when she was younger w/ eczema.
some alternatives w/ tried w/ my 18 mon old were raw goats milk, which still caused break out, so now he really mostly drinks water. we make him protein shakes using hemp powder which is very high in protein, and throw in lots of fruits and omega fatty acids oil.
also i went to the health food store and picked up some chewable calcium supplements for kids. he loves them and i depend on those to give him what he may be missing out on. also we get those organic yogurt squeezers and i put them in the freezer and we give them to him as a popsicle.
there are a few ideas, hope that helps!

I don't know if you have already done this but you said your doctor "thought" your son might be allergic to milk. Have you had him tested to see what he actually is allergic to? It might not even be milk. Constipation can be caused by lack of proper hydration and lack of fiber in a diet. Maybe just increasing his water intake and trying to get him to eat higher fiber foods such as carrots/corn apples, high-fiber cereals, oatmeal..stuff like that. Just a thought to be sure instead of driving yourself crazy for no reason! Good Luck!

Our pediatrician has us giving our daughter(3yrs) 2 Tums with calcium per day for a calcium supplement. She gets her multi-vitamin in the morning and Tums at night so the extra calcium doesn't interfere with her iron absorbtion.

We are having lots of milk related issues with my son. Initially when he first came off whole milk the nurse/ped suggested 1 Tums tablet in the morning and one in the evening. You may want to check with your ped. In addition to being an antacid it is also a calcium supplement.

Best of luck to you. Fortunately our son loves whole, soy and rice milk. We just have to figure out how much. He has the opposite issue with whole milk---lots of diarrhea.
