High Calcium Foods for Child Who Can't Have Dairy

Does anyone know a list of food with high calcium? My one year old can't have dairy or eggs and I don't want him to have brittle bones due to the lack of calcium. I know tofu has some in it, but not a significant source. I also know soy milk, however, he's not the biggest fan of it and you can't mix in flavor because it doesn't mix with soy milk!!

What can I do next?

I remember sardines as a kid but I don't know that she would or should eat them yet.Check with your County Extension Service, or maybe your Doctors office. Also a person who specilizes in nutrition or go on line and see what you can find. Good luck

Hello B.,

have you tried a different brand of soymilk? they also have oat milk, almond milk, rice milk all enriched w/ calcium and vitamin D.

google calcium alternatives, milk alternatives, etc.

here is a link that can help you:
USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference
Reports by Single Nutrients

http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/docs.htm?docid=15869

search by food
http://www.ars.usda.gov/main/site_main.htm?modecode=12354500

also look at nomilk.com it will give you ideas. you don't have to agree with everthing they say there but it will have good info/links.

while you're at it, make sure he gets enough magnesium and vitamin D. Oats are great for bones because it has silica which helps the calcium to be absorbed by the bones.

Good luck! and your son will be fine. ~Carmen~

Lots of cereals and orange juice have calcium added to them. For the cereal you will have to check the nutrition label. The orange juice should say it right on the front.

Hi B.,

I study nutrition and have found that green vegetables, beans, tofu and oranges contain calcium without a lot of associated problems with dairy. Hope that helps.
