We are having our twins 5th Birthday party this weekend and for the life of me I can't recall if we open the gifts before the cake or after??? Any thoughts? Thanks sooo much!

What can I do next?

My son will be 3 and I am thinking about having cake DURING the present opening. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but at the moment it's what I'm thinking. People will be occupied and not "bored" while he's opening his gifts and the little ones won't fight over toys. Don't know yet...just a thought.

I think at this age (my daughter is also turning 5) it's best to do cake first. It's hard to get little guests to pay attention and be gracious when ANOTHER kid is getting lots of great presents, so I know lots of parents who don't open gifts until after the party - esp. if there are lots of presents and won't want to open ALL of them. Don't make them wait for cake, you might have a mutiny on your hands! Good luck!

When we have parties for my kids (9 yr old triplets) we always did the presents right after the cake. That way everyone got to sing Happy Birthday to them and those that could not stay, still got a chance to participate in that part. Opening the presents is pretty much the last thing, and then any kids left played until it was time to go.

i would suggest the cake before the presents. the kids will get really crazy as they watch with excitement at the presents! Usually, you are spending good money for a nicely decorated cake and you want to be sure that it gets eaten. Over time, I have found that kids really aren't that keen on the cake and switched to homemade cupcakes. easier to handle and much easier on the wallet! my kids are now 19 and 13.
