Business Trip

With the exception of last year (I was 8 months pregnant!) for the past couple of years I go to Vegas from Sat-Thurs in May for business. I don't have a terribly exciting job as an admin, so this is something that I usually look forward to. But, this year I will be leaving my daughter (who will be nearly a year at that time) and I am totally torn. It's a great work experience and fun, but I feel so guilty leaving my daughter for that long! I'm sure it will be great daddy/daughter bonding time (if he doesn't pawn her off on my in-laws during the weekend for some time "off"...). Plus, I wanted to BF for a year and I don't have enough milk frozen to last 5 days (unless we can mix with whole milk at that age). Should I just wait until next year when she is older? In a way, I DO want to go, but like I said, I feel guilty. I've thought about having my mom or my sister come with me if I pay for the flight, but my husband doesn't think my sister is responsible enough and I don't know if my mom can get off work. Even if they just came for the weekend, that's only 3 days I'll be away! What have you other mamas done in regards to a business trip with an infant at home?

What can I do next?

Hi R....me again!! :-)

Don't feel guilty for going on this trip!! Youn most definitely should go, the time away will be good for all of you, especially since it is a short trip. Is there any way your husband can get some time off and tag along with you? That would be great and then you could bring your daughter too. Eeva was 4 months old when I had my first business trip and I was okay with it. I was just gone from her a week ago for one full week, the longest I've ever been without her and I was okay with that too. Trust that your daughter is in good hands. For me, the mentality was different when I left her for business rather than if I was leaving her for pleasure. It's way easier for me to leave on buesiness trips. This is also a good bonding time for your husband and your daughter- and for your husband to see your daily life as her mother and what you go through from start to finish. Good luck, we can talk about this more later "offline". :-)

Bottom line - go and don;t feel guilty!! :-)

Hi R.. You sound so sweet as a first-time mom, but girl, why in the world do you feel guilty? Do you not think that you deserve to enjoy this business trip and have a little time to yourself?! I do! Go for it, and enjoy it. Your wonderful daughter will be fine. Of course, your hubby can handle caring for his own daughter, for God's sake! I BF for a year with my son and had to leave him a couple of times for some very short trips. It was WAY harder on me than him. He did great with his grandparents or father. Never a worry. I just left enough frozen breast milk for the amount of time I was gone, and pumped while I was away to keep up my milk supply. I also included some formula in case he needed more while I was gone. It was stressful, but now my son is an independent, well-adjusted little guy who doesn't have any separation anxiety issues. Good luck!

I think you should go. Enjoy yourself and have some much deserved "you" time. I decided to take an extended leave of absence from my job and stay home with my daughter who is now 14 months and I sometimes miss having an identity outside of motherhood (I was a technology consultant and travelled a lot before I got pregnant). I think it will be a great opportunity for you and for your husband to spend some quality time with your daughter. If the trip isn't until May, then you have some time to store up some extra milk. Maybe pump one extra time during the day or evening if you have the time to get a little extra stored up??? Don't let that stop you though. If your daughter will be 11 months or close to a year, maybe ask your Dr. about mixing in the whole milk a little early. I doubt it will be a huge issue.

Go and have some fun for all of us moms that would love to jet off to Vegas for a weekend! :-)

Without a doubt GO!! You will have so much fun that you won't worry about your daughter once you are there. A break from family is such a good thing. You will come back refreshed and ready to be a great mom. This is a good thing for you and your family.

If your husband isn't eager about it and your child is not used to being away from you, then i would definately not go becasue you will likely worry about her the whole time you are gone. I always go with my gut feeling on stuff, so I wouldn't go if I had your feelings. Pray about it, and take everyone in the family unit into consieration.
All the best, Liz

You should definitely go and NOT feel guilty. You are giving your husband and daughter the wonderful gift of daddy/daughter time.

I left my 2.5 month old son for a weekend and they did GREAT! Yes, I missed them both, but it's easier to go and do it now. The longer you wait to make that first trip without her, the harder it will be. You never know when something will happen and you will HAVE to be away from your daughter. I got stuck in the hospital for a WEEK with appendicitis and didn't see my son for 4 days because of it. I didn't have meltdown or anything because I had already been away from him 3-4 other times. Oh, and my son didn't have a meltdown either, although he definitely missed mommy. :)
