Bummer

Anyone else ever just feel really lost. As stated in my previous post, I had a really important job interview this week and just found out I did not get the job :( Just really bummed right now. Not so much because the job itself was amazing but because we could've really used the money. Right now I run an in-home daycare business, and if I'm being honest I don't really like it, and money is tight. I quit a well paying job to be home with both my kids, but needed to bring in additional income, and we had the room to do this. Only problem is that I found I LOVE being home with my kids...I just don't like other people's kids. TERRIBLE, I KNOW! Just don't really know what to do I guess. I have a bachelor of science degree (initially wanted to go to vet school but decided I didn't want to), luckily I landed a pretty good job right out of college in IT troubleshooting software for veterinarians. (The job I didn't get would've been similar to this one but with even better pay) Stayed there for almost 4 years, even after I had DD. Started daycare after I had DS 18 months later. Part of me just really misses going out into the world and having a career outside of my kids, even though being away from them is hard. After being on a waiting list for 3 years I found out a couple months ago that I am able to enter school (through a technical college in town here) for Sonography in the fall, which I find really interesting and think I would love. But don't know if I want to go back to school, just to spend another 20k+ and still have no guarantee of a job when I get out. Not even sure we can afford for me to go back to school. I think I'm gonna keep looking for jobs I'd be qualified for, but it's hard to get time off to interview, and I really don't want to take a low-paying job and end up in the same rut. DH has been really supportive about my indecisiveness, even though I know it's tough having all this pressure to provide for his family placed on him. SO my question...Am I the only one who (at 27) still doesn't know what the hell they want to do with their life?? It's really easy to just feel lost sometimes. Too bad being a mommy doesn't pay in cash, because I really like that job...most days ;)

What can I do next?

You are still very young. It's not unusual for some people to change directions several times in a life time. Quite often a person will go to school intending on a certain career and then start doing it and realize it's not for them. So they change direction and start something new.

One thing you might be able to do is job shadow for a day or two. Many jobs allow this. Also check with a hospital or other medical center, quite often you can get raining and an internship without going back to school.

I would really investigate the field of sonography to see if you need to go to 'school' for it. I would be extremely cautious with trade schools(if that is indeed what you are looking at)They are oftentimes as huge ripoff. Maybe your community college offers some classes in it.

Also, what about trying to freelance in IT troubleshooting. specializeng in vets. It is worth looking into. There are a ton of vets out there and if you can come in and be an IT resource for them at a better cost I bet you could get business. The good thing is there is really nothing to lose by trying this as there wouldn't be much cash outlay. IF it doesn't work then you are only back where you started.

If you are serious about wanting a job...research companies in your area that you would fit with and cold call/email them. Have an awesome cover letter and resume ready for this. This is how I got 4 of my 5 interviews and my job one month ago. It works.

Oh..added to say I don't like my job already. Not because of the people or work...I'm just not meant to sit in front of a computer all day. Why I became an engineer ill never know :). I'm 36 and have no idea what I want to do with my life....

I went back to school at Cvtc at the age of 34. I graduated from there almost 2 years ago now with an IT degree. Haven't found a job in the IT field yet, but really haven't been looking much.

So no, you are not the only one.

Don't feel bad about knowing what you want to do I still don't and I am almost at the end of the working career.

Sonography sounds great. What can you do with it? Can you use it at a vet's office? Can you use it in an OB office? Look outside the box with this. If you can use it in an OB office you will always have a job as women do have babies.

You will find your way and you will balance life of working maybe part time and being home. I could not be a total at home mom unless I had something to do for me even when the kids were little. The working was for me and it showed the kids that moms could do something other be home and be productive members of society.

Good luck to you and have a good holiday season.
