Hi Moms! My husband is being transferred from Dallas to the White Plains area this spring. Can anyone recommend a neighborhood that is family friendly? We live in the suburbs right now and have a swimming pool, but I know that your area is more urban, so things might be different. Any advice would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

My husband and I just moved from Tarrytown to Pleasantville. Both are about 10-15 minutes from White Plains and both are great, family-friendly areas. The only down-side to Pleasantville is that there are no school buses, so you have to drive the kids to school. It's worth it though. Westchester is really expensive but if you look in the northern part of the county it's a little less expensive. I love Yorktown Heights and Cortland Manor. We would have bought there but my husband works in NYC so it was too much of a commute for him.

Hi D.,
I live in the County of Westchester and can tell you that White Plains and areas surrounding it is a great place to live. White plains itself has some beautiful suberbs as well as Valhalla and Harrison. All are near The Weschester Airport and Harrison has a great little town called Silver Lake that is worth looking into. Downtown White Plains is a beautiful shopping area also. Good luck in your move.

My husband and I just moved to Port Chester on the boarder of Rye Brook and Greenwich - great neighborhoods and parks and is only 15 minutes from White Plains. There are many surrounding towns in the area that are family friendly - pending on what your housing price max is, there are many to choose from - Rye and Rye Brook are the most affluent, Port Chester is a good surrounding town that is a bit more affordable. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi D., I think you are going to have to give people a little bit more information about what you are looking for if you want more useful and specific information. Westchester County is a suburban county comprised of over 40 cities, towns, villages and hamlets, most of which have their own school systems. There are city-like communities and very rural communities, small towns and large ones. This is an area that takes education very seriously so there are few bad school districts, but there are some that are okay, some good, some very good and some excellent. With the excellent districts comes the pressure to achieve. There are, not surprisingly, very upscale and affluent communities and others that have a greater variety. The northern part of the county is more open and country-like while the southern/middle part of the county is more urbanized, however, you have closer neighbors because things are closer together. The communities have very different identities and people tend to feel very strongly about where they live. Many people do have swimming pools here, but as a rule, those tend to be found in more affluent communities, tho' of course, that is a relative statement. Much of your choice will be dictated by economics in the sense that some towns are simply more affordable than others. I know this hasn't been very helpful, because it's way too general, but if you have more specific questions, don't hesitate to get in touch. Best of Luck, and welcome. A.

Ossining, NY is a very well kept secret. The schools are fantastic, they just opened an indoor-outdoor town pool that is wonderful. We have a new library, parks, a brand new beautiful Stop and Shop and we are close to both White Plains and NYC. A very kid friendly neighborhood, we have lived here for almost 12 years and are quite happy! Best of luck and welcome to the neighborhood wherever you land!
