Broken Finger

My 4 y/o broke her finger on Monday night. Now she has a splint on her middle finger and I am having trouble bathing her. Tuesday we put a plastic bag on her hand and put a hair scruny around it (I thought a rubber band might hurt). Well, her finger started bleeding again (it is also gashed at the first joint) and she got really scared. Now, she has to go back to a Dr on Tuesday to see if her finger has healed or if she has to continue using the slpint. Now, for a little girl to go without a bath for a week, well, you can imagine how she would smell. Any ideas on how to keep the finger dry is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your suggestions. Today we used the Glad Press and Seal and it worked GREAT! She didn't get any water on her finger and her finger didn't bleed at all. It was Wonderful. After 25 days her finger is no longer taped or bandaged up. It is still broken and finally starting to heal. Thanks again!!

S.,
Having had many broken bones I have vast experience bathing and keeping casts dry.
If the bath was too much movement for the finger and made it bleed you could try a shower, helpful to have a movable showerhead. One you can pull down and point in the area you need it to be in. The other option is sponge baths. One bowl of water for washiing, one for rinsing. You washe her up keeping the finger away from the water. You can then wash the fingers and palm of the hand without getting the whole thing wet.
Good luck. The good news is it won't last long! SHe'll heal and be able to take a bath again.

Ok I know this might sound a little weird, but my Vet uses Press and Seal. My younger dog recently ripper her nail off and the Vet had to finish removing it. The Vet Techs were telling me that they just put some Press and Seal on over the bandage when the dog goes out. They also mentioned that I might have to double up on the part where the dog walks. So, try putting come Press and Seal on that finger or hand. What have you got to loose?!?! Go figure a cool kitchen idea can help in other ways! Good luck to you.

Instead of a plastic bag, use a latex glove (like you'd find in the cleaning ailse). Instead of a scrunchy, use tape or an ace bandage on the OUTSIDE of the glove. I imagine the glove will probably fit her up to her elbow if you get a large and she shouldn't have any issues with her splinted finger fitting.

Works like a charm.

The medical gloves and tape are a good idea but you could also try just giving her a sponge bath or filling the tub with just a little bit of water and having her keep her arm up. Thats what we had to do for my little brother when he was about that age.

I would suggest getting one of those shower heads that you can take down and use as a nozel (they really aren't very expensive) and have her stand up for a pseudo shower. That way you get her clean but you can also control what gets wet or doesn't get wet. Good Luck

We just did a plastic bag around the whole hand....then you take duck tape around the wrist....Make sure the tape is on the bag and not her. That is what worked best.

I'd just give her sponge baths for now. You can use a wet wash cloth and soap.

medical gloves. You can buy them at any drug store. Being that she is 4 her hand with a splint should fit just fine. A little bit of masking tape helps too. I have had many broken bones and the tape always helped seal out the water

I would recommend giving her a bed bath or when washing her in the tub, put a bag over it and have her keep her arm up in the air. Our son had foot surgery (both feet), fractured his elbow and the tip of his finger all last year. We had him hold up his arm whole bathing and we washed him up quickly. I hope this helps.
