My daughter is almost 3 years old and just broke her arm. She is doing well , but any suggestions or advice on bath time or playing would be great. She is a very independant busy little girl.

What can I do next?

E. i'm sure you've got a lot of reponses already! But i know your pain my daughter did the same just a year ago. As for her playing she will limit her self if the arm starts to bother her. I learned that one the hard way! If she dosen't she will hurt the next day and that is when you may need to step in. Let her know she can't play on the monkey bars and stuff for a while. Explain to her why? But i learned that bath time is a tough one. That is when we turned to the shower we got one of those shower heads that can adjust and had a hose. I ended up taking a shower with her for a while till she got used to it. But nothing compares to a bath for a kid so we would let her fill the sink up so she could still play with her bath toys. I hope this may help a little for you! Good luck!

My daughter broke her arm at age 2. At bath time (not showers) we wrapped it in a couple of empty bread wrappers. Or maybe one bread wrapper, and one of those bags produce comes in. We taped it up. She had to sit backwards in the tub (so I could be closer to the break), and seemed to manage pretty well. For playtime, she could do just about everything before the cast...especially after a few days of figuring it all out. Incidentally, it seemed to rain a bit while she had her cast on, and we'd make sure it was protected from the rain. She couldn't put her coat on, so we'd make her put her arm inside the coat (not the sleeve), and we'd zip it up to protect her arm. Good luck!

My son broke his arm at age 4 (jumping off the swings). His cast was over the elbow area, so he had his arm in the bended position. He did pretty well with it. I don't think I would worry too much about the playing aspect of it.

As far as the bathing... the doctor told us baths, not showers (easier to keep out of the water). We used plastic wrap around it, then a plastic bag over that. We wrapped a wash cloth over the end area (inside) where the bag was taped (in case water would get in... it would go to the wash cloth first, before the cast). He held his arm up out of the water while I washed him up. It was a pain to do, and maybe more than we needed to... but I would rather take the extra time than to get the cast wet. He did as the doctor instructed, and they said he healed great.

Hope your little girl heals quick and feels better soon.

I had many broken arms when I was younger...my Mom would wrap a garbage bag around it and kind of tuck it in the cast. I also had a step stool in the bathroom and would rest my arm up on it when I was taking a bath. I would suggest don't limit her to much and just let her play normally she will complain if it hurts, and she will not do that activity again for awhile. Keep the upper part of her arm lotioned or that part that is not covered by a cast that way she will be less tempted to itch the part under the cast.

Good Luck

I have broken a total of 6 bones over the course of my life. I went to a medical store and bought this special bathing thing to cover my cast. I don't know what it's called but it worked miracles. I could bathe with no fear of getting my cast wet.

I wouldn't worry about her playing if she has a cast on. I was a kid the first time I broke my arm and I played volleyball, ran, swam and everything else.

Good luck.

I've never had a broken bone, but I have heard that the Glad Press and Seal product is great for covering casts for bath-time ect. It is like Saran Wrap, but not as frustrating and it really does stick well.

Good Luck!

I also used bags but I bought garbage bags, small ones will work for your daughter. They are a bit thicker and I felt more comfortable with them. My mom used bread sacks on me when I was 3 and broke my arm, even when we went to the wading pool.

My daughter was a senior in high school when she broke her arm in PE. She wasn't letting anything hold her back and went as far as doing chin ups with the cast on for the presidental fitness awards. Her PE teacher told her she couldn't do it so she showed him that she could. I wouldn't worry to much about her playing. Her arm is really protected in the cast. If it were a sling or soft cast, then you would have to be more careful.

My oldest daughter broke her wrist and when they put the cast on it went up past her elbow, they said at baths and stuff, to use a plastic bag we used a ponytail holder to keep it on the ouchless ones now. Playtime I wouldn't worry about it as long as she doesn't try to hit anyone with it on purpose. My oldest had fractured my middle daughter's leg when she was just 3. That doctor said they heal quick and after a couple of days they will get used to it and learn how to do things with it on. I think we had to have the cast replaced twice because she stuck cat food and dog food in the cast. I wasn't aware she was doing that until they removed the cast the first time. You'd be surprise what they can fit in there. And we did the same thing for bathing. It just wasn't has much water in the tub. Showers work too. Good luck
