Breastfeeding and the Pill and Getting Pregnant

I apologize if this is a little long and detailed. My son is three months old. I also have a 6 year old son as well. i exclusively breastfeeding. No bottles or pacifier. I however didn't trust it for birthcontrol so at my six week post partum my Dr put me on the pill. It made me have break thru bleeding. At a subsequent appt. she put me on a different pill. I did not realize that it was a combo pill with estrogen and after some research I did not start it as I was afraid it would diminish my milk supply. I called the office to get a progestrin only pill, but received little help as it was during the holidays (I'm actually still waiting for a call back). My husband I had sex with a condom on Christmas Eve. Yesterday I had light (just in the morning) spotting/discharge that was pinkish in color. I am freaking out that I could be pregnant. I'm afraid that somehow starting then stopping the pill caused me to ovulate. And I don't even know when would be a good time to try a pregnancy test to try to ease my mind. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

You're probably not pregnant. I'd suspect that the spotting was from being a little drier than you're used to. If you just want to be certain, mark your calendar to test in three weeks.

Not to freak you out or anything, but I exclusively breastfed both babies, and my period returned in full force within 6 weeks of giving birth. So, it's possible that you've ovulated. It seems unlikely that you'd be pregnant in any case since you used condoms, but anything is possible. It might just be that you are starting your period. Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know).

I'd be concerned that your doctor put you on the pill while you are BFing. At my postpartum visit my OB discussed my options for birth control that wouldn't decrease my milk supply, seems like the doctor shouldn't have started you on the pill at all. Starting/stopping the pill shouldn't cause you to ovulate, but just BFing won't cause you NOT to ovulate either. I got my first period when my DS was 8 wks old. Wait a couple weeks and take a test, just to be sure but it doesn't sound like you are showing the normal signs of early pregnancy.

Doubtful that you're pregnant. Going on and off the pill can mess up your cycle and cause break-through bleeding. When your Dr calls back discuss your concerns with him/her; ask about timing for the pregnancy test if that will ease your mind.
