I have been using the Meleda breast pump during the two months since my son has been born and I also used it with my daughter who is now 3 years old. The problem is that this weekend my son will be staying with his grandparents for the first time because we are taking our daughter to an amusment park and we don't think the sun and heat will be good for the baby, well anyways, as of 8am this morning my pump stop working. I think the motor went out on it and my warnety ended 2 years ago. Does anyone have any advice on a cheaper pump. this one worked great..I loved it, but it was a shower present from my parents since it cost almost $300. We just don't have that much to spend on a pump right now. Has any one ever tried the even flo or playtex pumps? Or know of any pumps that work well, are electric and cost less than $100?
Thanks

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advise. One of my friends, i found out yesterday, just stop using her pump a week ago and is letting me use it for the weekend and then after that I guess I'll just wait and see what happens. Luckly my son nurses very well and I'm a stay at home mom so there isn't a lot of times that I will need a pump. For those in the Knoxville area I called 5 different places that rents pumps and the price range from $50-$65 per month. Just to let others know in case they get in the same situation.

Hi,
If you are interested, I have the same pump you have (mine is the backpack version) and I am selling it for $100. I have no experience with any other pumps, but I know that you can get brand new ones on ebay for lower prices.

I had a medela but I also had an AVENT hand pump. I LOVED it. It was much quieter for me to use at work. You don't have to continuously pump it either. You just put it on and hold until the milk steam stops. Then you pump again. It really worked great for me it was easy to clean and I think it was about $30.00 Should be a breeze to use while on vacation.

Hi J.. I used the Ameda Purely yours. You can find it at Burlington Coat factory or google online and see if you can find a store close to you . I found mine on ebay for $150. You can get a new Medela Pump in Style for $250 at TArget. Still much cheaper than a year or so of formula.

I hope you find one. I would say you could have mine but it is not sanitary. I wish I could help.

Here is a website I found with a picture of it. You may be able tofind a local dealer that can send it faster.

Sincerely,
K.

most hospitals will rent you one, but they're ugly and look like tool boxes and it's certainly not a Medela. There are places that will rent them out you'll just need to check around and perhaps the hospital can tell you of some places in your area.

I'm with Sandy, I rented a Medela from a Home Health Care Supply store. It ran me around $25 a month and since I ended up only pumping for about 3 weeks, that worked out really well :)

Good luck, and have fun at the amusement park.

I would highly recomment the Medela Double Ease Electric (I think they have since changed the name). It was quiet, very portable, fast, and easy to use. I think it was fairly affordable compared to the Pump In Style. It held up through twins and fairly regular use. I pumped at work, in the airport, in the car, wherever! I also used the Medela manual pumps, but they were tiring. I would NOT recommend the Evenflo pumps. I went through two of those. They were noisy, slow, and uncomfortable. If you do rent a pump, research the model and style. Make sure you rent a model where the milk cannot get into the pump for safety and hygiene reasons. I would also recommend purchasing your own tubing, etc. for those same reasons.

Although your pump motor may have just stopped, chances are your pump has not been working correctly for some time. These pumps are only meant to last 1 yr - 18 months.

There are cheaper pumps out there, like the ones you mentioned, but they are not good pumps. In order for a pump to be effective and not cause damage or jeopardize your supply, they need to have a minimum suction and they need to cycle at more than 45 cycles per minute. (preferable 60-120)

Here are some good options for electric double pumps:
Medela Pump In Style
Hollister/Ameda Purely Yours,
Lansinoh Double Electric

or for occaisional use,
Medela Double Select

Single electric pumps:
Medela Single Deluxe

Manual breastpumps can also be effective if you are not pumping routinely.

Both Medela and Hollister Ameda make nice manual pumps.
The Avent Isis is also a good manual pump so does Lansinoh.
You can visit the websites to see the products and locate a retailer near you.
www.medela.com
www.ameda.com
www.lansinoh.com
www.avent.com

I have no idea how many mm mercury the Avent electric pumps pull, nor how they cycle, so I can not reccomend those.

It is true that a good pump is an investment. However, if you consider the cost of formula:
Plain Enfamil with Iron costs approx $13 per 14.3 oz powder - which appears from the package information to make 128 fluid oz of formula, or 16- 8oz bottles which would feed your baby for 2 to 3 days.
Would cost $130 month to feed the baby this formula.

Since babies should have breastmilk or formula as their primary source of nutrition for the first year of life, this would cost $1,560.00 - if your baby continued to only drink 48 ounces of formula per day.

So, when you really consider the cost of formula versus the cost of a good pump, which is guaranteed for a year....
You could buy 5 of the fancier Medela pumps for the same price.

I know that is difficult to comprehend when the budget is tight, but I also know that 12 years ago, when my oldest was born, My husband and I put all the money we would have spent on formula each month into a coffe can... and by the time my daughter was 6 months old, we paid cash for a new GE PRofile Washer and Dryer.

I hope this information helps,

Are you completely opposed to any type of formula? My daughter and son both were on a soy bean based formula and it was great. No issues with food allergies etc. They are now 22 and 18 and very healthly young adults. I was just wondering if the amount of time that he would be with your parents would hurt him with a bottle??? I know that getting them to use one can be an issue too. Just a thought and good luck. Breastfeeding was not something I did with either of mine even though it was the popular trend then.

I know this is a respose to an old request but I noticed the pump issue was resolved. But the part about the colicly baby issue i didn't see anyone offer advise on treating it.
Fennel tea works great on their little tummies. you can use your tea pot or coffee pot to make it . You take one TBS of Fennel Seed crush it and then 16 ounces of water an boil it or run through coffee pot and cool to a warmer tempature and put in a bottle and let them drink all they want. i wouldn't give them the milk for a few hours while giving them the fennel seed tea. I still to this day use it for my stomach. it works great. and it taste good, has a mild liqurish taste goes great with a drop of orange oil. Blessings S.

I bought an even flo pump but I didn't like it. It worked ok for awhile, but took forever to pump. Like 30 min each side. I also had problems with the suction. It had a rubber insert that you had to use and it just wasn't comfortable. You might consider renting a pump from a hospital for this occasion. They have several different plans. The place at Baptist Montclair has a plan for as little as 7 days. The store bought pumps just don't match up to the Medela ones.

With my son I had an Avent hand pump and I was so hard. With my daughter, I rented a Meleda double pump for from St. Vincents for about $25 a month - it was ugly but sooooo worth it.

you can rent a medela pump at a medical supply store. I saw that other people said it only cost $25 a month -- I wish I knew where that store was -- mine was $70 per month and the cheapest option was $50 per month. If you only need it for a short time, I would rent one. I bought a $40 pump at the store and it is not nearly as good as the medela.

I just joined mamasource and was reading back through messages, so you may have already resolved situation. However, I thought I would go ahead and sent you a link to the website that I bought my pump in case you are still looking for one.

http://www.worldwidesurgical.com/

These are the prices I was quoted for Medela pumps, I did not look at the other pump brands they carry for a comparison.
Pump In Style Original $195.00
Pump In Style Adv Shldr. $225.00
Pump In Style Adv Back Pk $225.00
Pump In Style Adv Metro $250.00

The are a certified Medela dealer, so if you pump has problems Medela's warranty will work. I know this first hand because I had to have my pump replaced.

Best of Luck.

I had an emergency when my daughter was newborn - very late at night my medela stopped working and I HAD to pump. I sent my husband to Walgreens to buy whatever they had. He came home with the cheap little Avent hand-pump and I LOVED IT. I ended up switching to it from the Medela. I would recommend trying it = I think it's only about $25 or so.

Good luck and have fun at the amusement park.

Is there somewhere that you could rent a pump? I rented my pump in Huntsville instead of buying. I thought I was going to breast feed for a year, but we decided to rent a pump at first just in case I couldn't stick with it that long. Boy was that a good decision! I only breast fed for about 6 weeks!

If you still want to buy one, maybe you could just rent a pump for 1 month or so while you research & save money to buy one you really like.

I'm glad it worked out for you but if you do decide you want to get a new pump I HIGHLY recommend the Ameda. They are kind of hard to find but you can go to their website. It is just as good as the Medela but only like 100 bucks. I love it! and it does something no other pump does.....it prevents any milk from ever entering the system. It is awsome!!!
