Avent manual pump, about $40. I had that first, then got the madella pump in style for $240 through Palms West Lactation Corner. I actually like the Avent hand pump better. I am actually able to get more milk with that. I gave away my pump in style and am sticking with the Avent for my 2nd baby.

Hi K.,
I used the Medela double breast pump for 13 months and it worked great for me. Its not too inexpensive, as it was around $250.00, but it still works and if I have another baby, I plan to use it again.
WIth this pump you can pump both breasts simultaneously and be done in about 10-15 minutes max. I used it up to 7 times a day for several months and then decrease as needed and it's still working!!
You can buy the Aventis plastic containers with lids to store or the lansinoh freezer bags (from target)that are the best bags to store in my experiance.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Good luck!

the double electric ameda egnell is less expensive than the medela and just as good. Frankly, after learning to pump for awhile, I was just as well off with the avent hand held pump...it is great and very inexpensive. Loved it and was more comfortable than the electric (though admittedly, it took longer).
Purely Yours, Double Electric Pump by Ameda. I used it for 11 months (I went back to work after 12 weeks, so was using the pump 2-4 times a day) without any problem (and plan to use it for my 2nd child). It's 1/2 the price of Medela and works just as good. I bought mine from www.breastfeedingexpress.com - it was very cheap and their customer service is out of this world! They even have a lactation consultant to help you with it (I spoke with her a couple of times). I highly recommend the Ameda brand and Breast Feeding Express.

I used a $60.00 Madella which worked well, however, you can get the more expensive better Madella's as a rental through the hospital. I know that Morton Plant has a program to rent them, so I'm sure other hospitals might if you are closer to others. They are like $500 breast pumps that you can rent for like $20/month as long as you need it. Good luck!

I have 2 choldren ages 2years and 7 months. I used the Medela pump- n- style. Yes, it cost around $275, but you really need a high brand pump if you are going to striclty use breast milk. This pump allows you to "double pump" so it cuts down in time. It is also very sturdy, I have used the same pump for both children, I never used formula. I breast fed my first until he was 1 and plan to do the same wuth my second. Just remember in the beggining you must pump every 21/2- 3hours just as your child would feed. It is also recommended that you have at least 80 oz in the freezer before returning to work. If your child is sleeping a lot through the night get up around 5 Am and pump, this is the time of the day you will get the most and be able to start your storage.
Good Luck~ B.

The Pump In Style (Medela) is pricey, but worth it. My daughter is 6 months, and I am still pumping and hope to continue breastfeeding until she turns one.
I had a single breast pump by The First Years- I loved it and it was inexpensive. Just not practical for work as you'd want a double pump.
Do NOT purchase an EvenFlo. I had to return mine (which luckily Target did). It was worthless. Trust me. I've been through 3 pumps in 6 months. I would have continued using the one by The First Years if it were a double! But, I love my Pump In Style.
Hope this helps...

Hi K.,
Your baby is very lucky that his/her Mom wants to breastfeed! There a wide variety of breastpumps on the market from the absolutely awful to "almost as good as baby". Unfortunately the only ones that are good enough to maintain a milk supply while going back to work are pretty expensive. However, formula is MUCH more expensive and so, by buying a good breastpump you will save lots of money in the long run. Multiple studies comparing the cost of formula feeding vs breastfeeding have figured the cost difference to be in the range of 75%!
That cost difference is only taking into account the things that must be bought with breastfeeding and bottlefeeding. There are other cost improvements with breastfeeding as well. A huge study by Kaiser-Permanente found that breastfed infants have far fewer sick child visits to the pediatrician. This saves you money in doctor's visits, tests, and medications as well as lost time from work. I could go on but I am sure you get my point!
Invest in a good breastpump. You might find that you use it for more than just this child and, even if you don't, consider it an investment in the future of THIS wonderful child!
Now to answer your question more specifically some good pumps for women planning to return to work might be:
Medela Lactina Select
Medela Pump-in-Style
Ameda Purely Yours
Whisperwear Pump (can be used hands free!)
You must have a double electric pump and pump both breasts at the same time to provide enough suction and stimulation to even come close to matching what the baby can do. But if you do you should be able to pump and store enough milk to never need to buy a can of formula!
If you have any other questions don't hesitate to write again and I will try to help.

Well the Medela Pump in Style is the one many working moms use. I have had friends use others and they either ended up not producing enough milk or buying the medela. It is expensive about 200.00 but if you end up having to supplement with formula 200.00 is about 1-2 months of formula. I bought my pump on ebay, and it was new and in the box but cheaper. I would also check Craigslist.com for a used pump. You can get new tubing and other disposables. Good luck...Jen

The Medela pump-in-style is excellent and worth the investment. I hope you attend La Leche League meetings or have a good lactation consultant because sometimes it takes some getting used to (pumping, that is). Best of luck! As much as that one is popular, I would actually suggest the Ameda Purely Yours. At $150, its a great deal. (you may be able to find it as low as $140) It does pump both breasts at the same time, and it comes with two controls...one is for how hard the suction is and the other is for how fast, so you can match it to your babies rythem, which is more productive in collection of your milk...This is also the ONLY pump that protects breast milk from bacteria with thier Hygienikit System..no worries about changing the tubing or anything....This is also the only breast pump that is 100% backed up the FDA. There are ones that have the same options such as the carrying case and all, but after seeing mine, a diaper bag will do just as well. I got mine from http://www.amedababy.com/ and there is free shipping.

I chose to rent a pump from St. Joseph's Women's hospital. I didn't want to spend the money on a pump when I won't be having any more children. On the downside, the carrying case is bulky and not as convenient as some of those you buy. Be careful about buying a pump secondhand. Make sure it's a kind where the milk does not come into contact w/ the pump b/c some diseases can be carried through breast milk. Good luck!

Medela Pump In Style is one of the best, but Purely Yours is also one of the best. The Medela is more well known because of it being marketed and sold in local stores, but Purely Yours by Hollister/Ameda is an excellent pump.
Sometimes I suggest moms buy an inexpensive manual pump to get through the beginning...a Medela Harmony works great. Then, after a pay check is in they can buy the more expensive pump. The manual will work fine for getting ready to return to work. Actually, we are very gadget oriented here, but in other parts of the world women express all the time -- they use their hands. You can read more about it at
www.lactationinstitute.org and click on Manual Expression.
Returning to work so early after having a baby is very hard for mommas and having something that you are doing for your baby even while you are away helps. Once you walk in the door, be sure to spend some serious skin to skin reconnnect time with your baby and nurse, nurse, nurse. Save the bottles for when you are away, and give only yourself when you are not.
Take care, and happy mothering,
P.

I use the Medela PumpinStyle Advanced. There's no (real) reason to get the advanced and they have a new one that even more advanced coming out. You could just get the regular pumpinstyle - noone knows it's a pump. It looks like a briefcase and works very well. It was recommended to me by other working moms. I'm in Tampa and St. Joe's Women's Hospital sells them cheaper than Babies R Us for example. I've been pumping at work for nearly 2 months now and very satisfied.

I do breastfeeding counceling at babies r us and often get this question. what i find most often is that the pumps by evenflo, gerber, and the first years are rather horrible pumps. they are cheap but they are cheap for a reason. for a full time working mom i reccomend the ameda egnell purly yours which you can find for less than 200.00 it is equivilant to the medela pump in style, which runs over 2-300.00. you can get great deals by talking to pat rizzo at the wellington regional breastfeeding center. they sell for less than retail and they have a few different choices at very fair prices less than 200.00.
you can also check differnt places on the net. you can find the ameda egnell purly yours with the whole kit etc for less than 150.00 often. brand new in box. and they have fabulous customer service as well.

Hi, I have 7 children, and I also had to pump. I don't know how easy they are to find now, but I had the best success with the old hand pump, it's blue and white, and looks like a bicycle horn, lol! It doesn't pump a lot per pump, but it was easier on me and my body! The electric ones felt like they were going to pull me inside out, and hurt so bad! I swelled up from them immediately, and could hardly get any more milk for several hours. I would think if you search around on the web a little, you'd find one, and it would be a WHOLE lot cheaper than the electric ones! God Bless, I hope you find what you need!

You CANNOT, CANNOT, CANNOT beat the AVENT breastpump. It is manual, portable, easy, and gentle. It is about $40 if I remember correctly (been a couple of years). I used a $300 Medela electric with my first child and found the Avent to be easier, much more user friendly, gentler, and certainly much more cost effective. It is bit slower of course since Medela pumps both breasts at once, but once you get the hang of it, the Avent is still very fast. There are replacement parts available and easily accessible and affordable at most stores like Target. I absolutely loved my Avent and especially loved the fact that it went along with the Avent bottles and cups that we used too. Good luck and kudos on continuing the breastfeeding!

You can try renting a pump through your local hospital. They generally run around $25-$30 per month. They are also much stronger than most of the models at the stores and at that price you are not spending the several hundred dollars you would to purchase a good one at the store. Good luck.

I bought a Medela pump and it was great! Not cheap, but if you do a Google search on the web for them you can get a much cheaper price than the store. The best advice for breastfeeding is to keep trying. It is hard in the beginning, but it does get easier. If it becomes too painful you can always pump a feeding or two and give a bottle and then return to the breast. I had to do that early on and my son had no problems taking breast and bottle. Best wishes!

IT really depends on how much you will need to pump and how long you will be away. If you are going back full time you want a pump that is fastand efficiant. You want to be able to pump both sides a the same time. You also want something that will emty you completely so you won't drop in supply or get any plugged ducts or infections. That being said I would definately recommend the Medela Pump n Style. It is a bit pricy, but in my opinion worth every penny. I have heard this from other Mom's as well. I had a hard time nursing and was very determined not to feed formula if at all possible. Without this pump I would have never made it. My son nursed exclusively for almost 8 months and still nurses. This pump is most like a hospital grade pump. If you ask around you can often find someone who will let you borrow theirs. IT is safe, you may just want to get your own attachments.Check out places like ebay and Babies r Us always has them. If you have any questions yo can feel free to email me directly or call me. I'm more than happy to help.-M.

I have two children and breastfed both times. With the first one I bought a cheap electric pump, I can't remember the name right now, but it worked great for a while and then after about two months just stopped working. Then my cousin gave me a Modella one that she had gotten from WIC and it worked really well. I recommend that brand, but if you are going to be going back to work I assume you will be pumping a lot (especially if your baby eats as much as my second baby did), so I recommend you go the route I did with my second child and spend at least $80.

I really like my Medela Pump in Style. Like the other moms said, it is about $250 but very much worth it. You can buy a used one for about half of that on EBAY and just use the "motor" from it and purchase new personal parts. That is a great way to save money. With my older child I used a pump by the First Years and I will NOT recommend that to anyone! Just make sure that no matter what you get, you get a double pump so it will save you time while you are at work! Good luck!

Hi K., I am a mother of 2, and honestly the best pump I used was a standard manual pump that I got for free from the wic office. I bought an electric pump from target, and received a more expensive electric pump for 1 of my showers, and preferred the manual pump over both. The suction is not so great with the electric pumps, they pump too slow. With the manual pump, it is definetely cheaper, you can pump alot quicker (couple minutes) and it has much better suction. Good Luck! L.

Medela Pump In Style (lower end available @ Target for around $240. or Model up available @ Babies R' Us $320). I used my first one through both children (pumping 2x/day @ work for well over 1 year each). The motor seemed a little sluggish after child 2 so I replaced it with another Pump In Style for my 3rd child. I know that it seems pricey, but compared to the cost of buying formula over the course of a year... you still come out ahead. Plus all the nutritional benefits of breastfeeding.
Also, Avent has a comfortable manual pump that is not too bulky ($30-60 @ Target). It has a soft silicone insert that makes the pump more comfortable than a lot of the other models out there. If you go with this one, make sure to have a couple extra Avent bottles on hand (as they are an unusual size, but we preferred these bottles to traditional bottles).
Evenflow and some of the other battery operated/electric pumps were terrible. Evenflow should be taken off the market (think vacuum cleaner hose to breast).

I got mine through the lactation consultants at Healthpark- they showed me how to set it up and use it, and you can call them with problems- they usually have replacement parts as well. Also- don't bother with the gerber bags or the medela bags- use the lanisoh bags. Gerber is too thin, they leak and break when defrosting sometimes, and the Medela bags use the whole twist tie thing, big pain in the butt. Good luck!

First congratulations. Second try manual expression before you go out and purchase an expensive breast pump that you have to haul around with all of it's attachments. I was able to manually express in a third of the time that it took me to unload, unpack, set up and use the pump. It's a technique and you may have to try several hand positions but to me it was alot easier. I breastfed/expressed until my daughter was 2yrs and it's the most wonderful thing in the world. Nothing can replace that feeling. If you are still interested go to the La Leche Legue web page and they have alot of helpful info.
Good Luck,
