My seven month was hosptalized over the weekend for rsv. since we have been home he has been pooping about ever hour or so. his bowel is mainly mucus. Just the last two bowl movments have had blood mixed in with the mucus. i dont know if the mucuse is his boddy getting rid of all the mucus from being congested or if its somthing more serious. I know the blood is not normal but i though it might be from his rectum being so irritated. he also has been EXTREEMLY fussy and whimpers in his sleep. Has anyone else expirenced this? Any sugestions.? should i make an appoint ment or take him to the er?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sorry I took so long to let you all know what happened. He did in fact have C.diff. which is nothing too severe. I was caused by the anti bioatic. he had been off the anti botic for a while now and his bowels are back to normal and he is his happy little self again. thank you all soo much for the help. as a young single mother I REALLY REALLY appriciate it. thanks!!!

go to the doctor NOW. blood in stool is NEVER OK. the only time it might be from irritation is if stool is hard.

Hi S.,

I have Crohns disease. This is what happens to someonme with Crohns. The mucus the blood.

The blood in the stool depends on if it is red or dark brown.

If the blood is red, it suggests that the blood is coming from the rectum, which is better than having the blood be dark brown, which means that it's coming from higher in the intestines.

If you are a Melaleuca customer, I would strongly encourage you to talk to your doctor about starting him on our Florify. It is a probiotic for the intestines. It is awesome! It's kept my intestinal tract healthy for over 5 years now!

I would take him to the ER. There might be an abstruction in his bowel. You just never know. Better to be safe than sorry. If he was on antibiotics, it could be a reaction to those. Take him in!

Wishing you all the best!
J.

I would have him seen sooner rather than later. With a recent hospital stay and I assume antibiotics, it is possible he could have something called C.Diff. This can be a cause for frequent mucousy stools with blood. They check for this with a stool sample. Interestingly it can be caused by antibiotics but is also treated with antibiotics. C.Diff can also be spread person to person by contact, and the hospital can unfortunately be a good place to pick it up if everyone is not vigilant about their hygiene precautions between patients. The hospital that I work at has special precations placed on rooms of patients with even a possibility of having C.Diff, gown, gloves and must wash hands with soap and water before leaving room (not use the foam). To protect your self and your family at home just in case, be sure to keep Baby's diapers contained in one area rather than many areas around the house, and wash your hands well with an antibacterial soap and water after all diaper changes and contact with your baby. Hope your Son feels better soon.

Take him to the ER. Having that much diarrhea will probably make him dehydrated, so he'll need careful watching, probably some IV fluids, and maybe some antibiotics. It could be c-diff, which someone else already pointed out. Right now the most important thing is to call your doctor, and then take him the ER. I hope he feels better soon. Let us know what happens.

Bloody stools are not normal and I would get him into the ER or the Dr immediately. If he is on antibotics it could just be irritation from the medication but it could be something else. I wouldn't take a chance, it sounds like he is having painful gas/bowel movements. They could change his antibotic and hopefully things will turn around quickly. I wouldn't wait...seek medical attention soon.

I would call your doctor office and ask the answering service to talk to the doctor that is on call to see if he/she recommends being seen in the ER for this. Good Luck!

I would recommend calling your doctor. RSV can be pretty vicious. Even if it is Christmas, I wouldn't take a chance on his condition getting worse. I wish you the best.
