Hello Mamas, I am looking for good summer book suggestions for my kiddos. My boys are 12 and 9. Are the Rick Riordan books geared for kids that are older than 12, they seem like they might be a little scary? My younger son is a bigger challenge as far as I'm concerned because he thinks he's sooooo big and doesn't want to read anything he considers too "babyish". My older son will be in the 7th grade and my younger will be a 4th grader. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi M.!
My kid is 11 years old, and his favorite author is Rick Riordan, he devoured the author's books! . He already has read twice each book..... He also likes Harry Potter and books related to mythology and ancient civilizations.
"The Diary of A Wimpy Kid" is also fun to read (it doesn't teach anything, but it's fun).

Your local library should have a list for each boy's age group. If they don't, I bet the school does. I would try that first.

take them to the local library and talk to the librarian. he or she can recommend appropriate books for the appropriate ages. I know one that is popular is diary of a wimpy kid the 4th grader may like. I know they have a movie out based on this book. harry potter books may be good for your older son and they movies based on these books too. have them read the books then offer to let them watch the movies once they read the books.

You could also call your public library and ask the children's librarian what they recommend or what all the kids are checking out. They can be a tremendous resource, and the services (and the books) are free!

Hello, look up Henry Winkler's books. The series escapes me now, but my son loved them. They'll be good for your 4th grader.

Our 7th grader loves the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz (I even read it too!). He also enjoys the Artemis Fowl series and 39 Clues. He prefers adventure/mystery/spy thrillers. He generally hates to read but with these particular series, he can't wait to get the next one. I think the 39 Clues is perfectly fine for your younger son. Alex Rider is a teenage spy geared more towards 12-14 but definitely contains some violence (not graphically described) but especially in the later books.

I know you asked the question for book recommendations a long time ago, but I thought I would pop in and give a quick response anyway. I just wrote a fun, wholesome children's e-book called, "Thomas and the Pirates" which uses silly adventures to teach solid family values for kids aged 8-12. It is available for $2.99 but Amazon will be running a free giveaway from the 23rd-24th of March so if you log on then you can get a copy for free! Here is where you can get a copy on amazon:

My 9yo (and 13yo) loved the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan! Now he's "reading" the book "Eldest" while listening to the audio book. He loves reading that way.

If they haven't read Harry Potter it should be at the top of the list! They would both enjoy it very much. I don't think the Rick Riordan books are scary-my son loved the Percy Jacksons and he read them when he was 7 and wasn't afraid. Also-Diary of a Wimpy kid books are great for both ages.
