Any idas/suggestions on good books for 5th grade 10yo boy to read? My son likes a lot of comicals like the "Whimpy Kid" and books with lots of pictures. I'm trying to get him into reading chapter books to prepare him for junior high next year.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the GREAT book selections...
He received his first scholastic book order mags from school and of course he chose to preorder Diary of a Wimpy Kid #5, also, Percy Jackson The Last Olympian, Return of the Homework Machine and Alpha and Omega (hasn't seen the movie). Has anyone heard of Redwoods by Jason Chin, it was a Teachers' Pick and winner of the National Science Teacher's Assoc. Outstanding Science Book Award 2010

Harry Potter!! My son loves this series so much that he stays up late reading and he even read it on the beach. If he is resistant I would read the first couple of chapters to him so that he gets over the fear. My son started these last year in second grade and thats how we started. He thought they were too "big" for him and was afraid to start them. Once he got hooked he couldn't stop.

Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief.
My son read one called Eggs, also, that he seemed to like. (He is a 7th grader this year... and he read Eggs the summer after 5th and again in 6th grade. For some reason he likes to re-read books that he has already read).
My son also enjoyed several of the Campfire Weenies type books. They are creepy funny short stories.

A lot of kids like the Harry Potter series. My kids, even though my daughter is an excellent reader and LOVES reading, never got into reading them. They love the movies... maybe that's why they don't do the books. Too time consuming when they already know what to expect.

Hi, my 9 year old also has been a big fan of the Whimpy Kid books. Other series that he has liked: Series of Unfortunate Events (Lemony Snicket), Charlie Bone (Jenny Nimmo), and if your guy likes sports, Tim Green has several novels with football or baseball themes. And of course, the Harry Potter books.

Ask the children's librarian at your local brach library. Also my branch has bookmarks with a suggested reading list for different age groups. From that list my son liked the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage, and Gregor the Overlander series by Suzanne Collins and Fablehaven the Series by Brandon Mull. These are all action and some magic involved. Good luck.

When my son was that age he LOVED the "captin underpants" books. It reminds me a lot of the "Diary of a whimpy kid" books.

Lots of great suggestions, I just wanted to add that you can find just about all these books at Half Price Books. They have a lot of Hardy boys (the new and old series) as well as Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson, although those ones seem to go quick. My son loves to read and loves the Lightning Thief series and Harry Potter. We've found a lot of other great books at Half Price books too! Books make great rewards!

You might try to find the Hardy Boys series or some from the past like that........or maybe Harry Potter, and such.........

Take him to the library and let him look around......maybe he will find a series he likes there......at least it doesn't cost if he doesn't like it......

Good Luck.

Check out the books by Dan Gutman, Andrew Clements, and Gary Paulsen. Like the Diary books, these are also funny stories about boys in school. Also heard that the books by Henry Winkler are good but haven't tried them yet. Good Luck!

Your son's school library should have the Bluebonnet Award list of books. The children's section at most public libraries has the list handy, too. It's a good place to start. The librarian at my kids' elementary school always made a big deal out of the list and publicized it broadly. Kids who read a certain number of the books got a small prize, and kids who read all of the books got out of class to attend a party in the library. Check with the school librarian to see whether he or she has any such incentives and suggestions.

My guys like the Harry Potter series, Alex Ryder series (spy type stories), Percy Jackson (greek mythology) and the author has a new Egyptian mythology series, but my boys have not read that, The Alchemist series, Spiderwick, Spetimus Heap series.... sensing a theme here? We like the fantasy sci-fi books. THe Rangers apprentice is also popular in my house.
