My 6 year old woke up completely normal, but by mid-day developed this bluish purpleish tint on his lips and a dotty, not bumby rash under the lower lip. He's not allergic to anything (up until now) and said he didnt hurt himself or didnt bump into anything...didnt eat anything new, it doesnt hurt, doesnt bother him, but it bothers me!!! what could it be?? do i need to worry???
well, as expected, its nothing serious... he was messing around with a rubber-band, so i'm assuming it just snapped back and bruised him a little... he's running, playing, jumping and has no signs of any respiratory issue... AT ALL!!! i spoke to the nurse in our pediatricians office, she said just watch him close and dont worry!!! so for those of you who were kind enough to mention what i SHOULD be in the hospital, and not on the internet, its SATURDAY, and a religious holiday!!! so doctor offices are closed, and while waiting for the doctor on call, i chose the internet as an opinion... oh, silly neglectful me!!!
.
If my child had blue lips I'd be at the hospital not on the computer!
He could be cold, low oxygen, heart/circulation problem, etc it could be harmless but that blue tint could also point to something serious!
Edited: in one of your old questions you were concerned he had asthma and there's a family history you should have been at the doctors this morning! Not all asthmatics wheeze and cough.
Please update us. Like others said - blue lips are usually a sign of oxygen deprivation and could indicate something serious. I hope you got him to an urgent care or an emergency room long before you see this. What happened?
Blue lips? Yikes... That almost always means lack of oxygen (unless your house is 30 degrees) which could mean a number of illnesses/problems. It would be hard for a kid to tell if he felt light-headed or anything. I have no idea about the rash. Take him in.
Blue lips are no bueno!! You should probably take him to an urgent care or your peds office if it is open!
Don't know where you live exactly, but bluish lips mean issues with oxygen - google "after hours pediatrics" and see if there are any in your area. They are usually like urgent care but bill like a regular office visit. If nothing is close, try an urgent care. Better safe than sorry!
I would probably call the pediatrician's office & talk to the nurse or doc on call--just to be safe.
If it increases, I would have him looked at.
Either he's REALLY cold, or he's suffering from oxygen deprivation.
Which, if you don't have medicine or an oxygen tank at home, means you need to SCOOT to the ER. NOW. Don't waste time worrying, get him in the car and go to the ER.
Why not call the nurse advice line at your local hospital? I have used them before, they have even called me back the next day to make sure all was well. Trained nurses take the calls, you'll get professional advice and they can put your fears to rest or alert you to a potential problem.
even though you already got your answer one thing to think of if there is next time is "did he give himself a hickey", lol... my 4 year old has done this a number of times when drinking out of a yogurt container or apple juice bottle... voila, rash on either top or bottom side of mouth, purple in color.. looks bad like "wow whats going on with you!?!"... yup, then it turns out to be a hickey when you go to the doctors :)
Has he had any type of cold or even runny nose prior? My youngest was waking in the morning and naps with blue lips. I finally brought him in they did chest xrays no pneumonia but the film did show constriction consistent with asthma. He wasn't obviously wheezing either. We did breathing treatments for a week or two and he was find. But I also notice now if he eats anything cold or he is cold (not necessarily cold for us) his lips turn very blue. Almost purple. He is also very very fair skin.
If your son isn't complaining of having a hard time breathing, I don't know if you necessarily need to rush him in, but I would definitely bring him in first thing Mon. if it still carries on. Also we've had a similar reaction with a spider bite on the lip. Just a thought....
good luck
