Blue Spot on My 2 Year Olds Bottom...

So since my daughter was born she's had this bruise looking mark (about the size of a tennis ball) on her lower back right above her butt.. At first I thought it may be like a bruise or blood pool from always being on her back as an infant but she's 2 now and it's still there. My mom said her niece has this and there's some old wives tale about it showing they were descendants of Ghengis Khan.. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a kiddo with this or known someone who has? I'm not worried because the doctors have obviously seen it and said nothing about it and it doesn't hurt her or anything. I guess I just expected it to go away and it hasn't. I'm not sure if it helps but she's Hawaiian so she's got pretty dark skin, and no skin problems or any other strange marks..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys! After everyone telling me it was a mongolian spot I webmd'd it and sure enough that's what it is. I was a little worried about someone seeing it and thinking we were abusing her but glad I'm not the only mom out there with kids that have this!

It is called a Mongolian Blue Spot. (you can look up the term online).

It will go away eventually.
It is not anything 'wrong'.
Babies are born this way.
Both my kids had that.
They are now 4 and 8 years old and it is gone now.

No worries.

It is not a bruise.

Yes, Hawaiians/Asians/locals do have this. It is common. Very common.
I had it too as a baby.
It is NOT only on dark-skinned babies/kids. My kids are very fair... and they had the blue spot. I did too. I am fair skinned. It is common in many ethnicities.

It sounds like your baby has a mongolian spot. They are normally found in non caucasians. There is usually no problems that accompany it, and it uysually requires no treatment. It should eventually begin to fade. Try to google it and see if the pictures look the same. But that's exactly what it sounds like. Hope it helps!

It's called a mongolian spot, both of my children have them. If they have olive skin from being of Indian or Italian descent it is totally normal. The Dr actually has it in their medical records for my children from when they were born. My daughter's father is of Cherokee indian descent and my son is Italian.....no worries, it's a right of passage :)

Yup, as everyone else said, it's a Mongolian spot and it is very common in babies of color. My kids are 1/2 Chinese - one had big blue spots on his bottom (both sides) and the other didn't. My son is 4 now and his are gone. They are totally harmless, so if they never fade, it's no big deal, but most likely they will fade away within a few years.

Yep, its called a Mongolian spot. Your Hawaiian heritage line probably brings it out. I bet she has really beautiful skin color too. Its usually slightly darker tan, with big dark brown eyes and gorgeous black hair.
Its different from the reddish "strawberry"color marks some have when born. My grand daughter had the "stork bite" mark on her upper lip and between her eyes but they faded and you cant see them at all now. She also had one on the small of her back and it hasnt gone away. It looks a bit like a fat catapillar crawling across her back. My daughter groaned and then laughed when we first saw it. She says its going to be her "tramp stamp" the rest of her life.

Wow, I didn't realize that's what it was. My mom said I had one when I was a baby, and when I had my son, I thought the same thing you thought. She told me it was nothing to worry about, but I don't remember her telling me what it was. I'm glad you asked cuz now I know.

My son is 20 months old and has had the same thing since he was born. His bruise looking mark is circular, about the same size, and is on his top right butt check/lower back. I've never heard of that old wives tale but it's funny because my husband calls our son Ghengis Khan. Ha! I will have to tell him. I'm Mexican and my husband is white...our son is pretty light skinned but easily tans.
