Blood in Ear 3 Weeks After Getting Tubes Put In?..

My 4 year old had tubes put in 3 weeks ago, she also had her tonsils and adnoids removed... Everything has healed but her right ear, she is in daily pain and when I took her back to the doctor he said that there is a lot of blood still in there he cannot see it yet nor can she have a hearing test because of that, he said he will recheck her in six weeks. That would be nine weeks with this ear pain. Has anyone ever had this issue ? I was told to continue to give Motrin or Tylenol for pain, but that would be nine weeks of daily pain medicine.... Side note, she was admitted to the hospital after surgery for three days, because of her oxygen levels and swelling in the back of her throat after surgery. On the first night she was bleeding out her right ear, not a discharge actual bleeding. I am not getting any answers from doctors except that "sometimes this happens ".. .. I hope someone can help me shed light on this. Also Dr. said do not put drops in that ear the body breaks down the blood itself.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice, to those that say I should not listen to people on the Internet, of course we as parents put all of our trust into doctors and hope they are leading us in the right direction, but when that ENT tells me six more weeks while my daughter is there crying in pain, it does not make sense to me, and that was his advice as of Tuesday morning three weeks post surgery, yes I have already scheduled a second opinion. But I DO believe in talking to other parents and other experiences that they have gone through with their children , I feel it helps ease the mind whether one is overreacting or should be overreacting... Not that it would make a decision for me , but one experience one mother has gone through May help another. She will definitely go for her second opinion with a different ENT and hopefully he can give her some relief..

oh my! my kids were the kings of tubes (in retrospect i really regret how often i let it happen) but there was never actually bleeding out of the ears afterwards!
i'd follow up insistently with this doctor, and if he blows you off and wants you to let it ride for 6 more weeks (really???!!!) i'd find another doctor.

I'm always surprised when Moms ask questions about what the doctor said. Why do they not trust their doctor? How can a group of mothers know any more than the doctor? I suggest you ask the doctor for more information. Or, if you don't trust the doctor, get a second opinon.

. If you don't understand what their answers mean, ask for more specific information. Don't leave until you get your questions answered.

The blood is likely causing pressure in her ear so it would be painful. I would call your ENT doctor.

We had some slight bleeding when our kids had their tubes in. It resolved itself. I think we had pain for a few days afterwards, but definitely not 3 weeks.

My kids get pain when they have regular fluid in their ears (even with the tubes).

I doubt the ENT doctor will want your child to be in pain for another 6 weeks. I agree with Marda below. Just give the nurse a call and see what they say.

Good luck :)

Welcome to mamapedia!!!

So you don't like what the doctor said and you believe that people on the internet will be able to help you?

I would go back to the doctor and state - this is not working for me. I need better answers, my daughter is in pain. I'm NOT going to wait 6 weeks for her pain to subside. Tell me what is going on.

If you don't like the answer? Get a second opinion.

My son was ALMOST 1 when he had his tubes put in. We didn't have any problems that I can remember. He didn't get his tonsils and adenoids out until he was 12. There was a LOT of pain for him with that one and took him just over 10 days to heal.

IF you don't get the answers from the doctor? Go to your normal pediatrician. Either way - you NEED to let the DOCTOR know that he is NOT giving you answers that you need.

something is wrong with the ear tubes, they could have been put in wrong, the child might be allergic to something in the ear tubes, ear infection..something is wrong..take the kid into the er..now..if you wait until the next scheduled appt. the child could go deaf by then..dont wait another day, get it checked out. sounds like the doctor did something wrong in the placement of the ear tubes and isnt fond of the ideal of his mistake being looked at by a professional..get going

I wouldn't fool around with it - I agree that you go back to the doctor and say this is a huge problem in your mind because of the pain. Get a referral to another physician - a pediatric ENT. Take any X-rays, lab results or records you have - you have paid for those and you own them. The new doctor might want to run some additional tests but at least you can start with what already exists and the new doctor can see if there's a change. If you can get to a children's hospital, that might make sense.

Normally I say listen to the expert in that area but in this case....bleeding in her ear and pain, not acceptable. Go to the family doc or find another ENT/ORL doc.

Don't blame you at all for asking other mothers if they've had this issue before. We can learn from others' experiences and that's what a site like this is for.

Glad you're getting a second opinion. That first doctor doesn't seem to know what he's doing.

I really hope that your daughter's ear is okay...
