I am going for a second opinion to another ENT about my 22 month old little girls 3 ear infections and possible tube placement. She is on Zyrtec prescribes by the ENT # 1. I'm going to have to tell ENT# 2 that another ENT prescribed it, well maybe, I guess if he asks....Do I tell ENT # 2 that I am there for a second opinion or do I not mention that? thanks in advance
ENT #2 needs to know what meds she's on in order to make a good diagnosis. I would just tell ENT #2 that you have been seeing another doctor for your daughter's problems, and since you heard such good things about ENT #2, you'd like to have him/her give an opinion on your daughter's condition. Doctors understand this, and I'm sure they see this all the time.
Yes tell them everything. I went for a second opinion as well. I really liked the second doctor and had the tubes done. I am so happy I did it, my son had ear infections every 25 days. It would not go away. Believe me I did not want him to get it done since he had a head injury last May. I was soooo worried about him being put under anistisha. ( sorry bad spelling) But thank God it all went well and NO ear infections for 8 weeks now. :)
I wouldnt mention that its a second opinion until it arrises. Wait and see what he says first. Have them check her ear drums really closely. I have gone through so much, had a bunch of ear infections, and had ear tubes before and none worked, because my ear drums were deformed and so were the estashian (sp) tubes in my ears, so my ears werent able to drain properally. And if you dont like the way this ENT is, then continue to go to them until you find one that you do like and agree with.
Doctors need all the information to make a proper diagnosis, therefore you should not withhold any information. My daughter recently had tubes put in her ears and her adenoids removed due to consistent fluid in her ears, ear infections and heavy snoring. We were nervous and put it off a while, but it was the best thing for her. The procedure was quick and easy and the recovery was amazingly fast. She was perfectly fine that afternoon and has been sleeping and breathing much better ever since. No ear infections since. Yes tell them. My son had constant middle ear infections for 4 months till when they put the tubs in at 8 months. It was a blessing! Couldn't stand to see him in so much pain.

Yes, tell him why you are there. All good doctors should be able to handle second opinions and they are normal part of medicine. He needs to know about meds and previous findings so it's important not to hide anything. Don't be embarrassed - getting 2nd opinions is a responsible action. You can also have the records sent over from ENT #1.
FYI Ear tubes are considered a very overdone procedure, and the tubes often fall out. There are other things you can do to reduce/eliminate infections. I have many work colleagues who avoided the procedure and their kids no longer got ear infections.

and also, if you end up getting tubes in her ears, have them draw blood and for an allergy test at the same time while she is sedated. My daughter got tubes, tonsils out and adnoids out last summer and hasn't had an ear infection since! Unfortunatly, during one of her last ear infection last winter, it was a very bad inner ear infection, her ear drum burst and now she has some slight permanent hearing loss in that ear. Not to scare you, but you do need to be proactive with this stuff. If there is fluid built up then it needs to be taken care of. But I'm no doctor, so get a 2nd and even 3rd opinion until you find the answers that you want!
You can say the Ped put her on the Zyrtec and you were simply referred to see an ENT...end of story. Let doc # 2 look at the ears and provide his/her advise.
Both our kids had ear infection after ear infection. No one ever referred us to an ENT for our 1st and in hind site, I should have questioned it. After countless ear infections with baby number two by the time she was a year old, we were sent to the ENT...best thing ever. She had tubes put in which was a 2 min procedure (the pre and post surgury were much longer) and she was like a different child. Slept better, ate better, better mood AND way less ear infections (still ended up with 2-3 after the procedure which is normal). The diff was, when she got an infection, the fluid would leak (well, it would crust up in the ear and we had to clean it out) out of the instead of pooling up IN the ear and causing pressure and discomfort. We were sooooooo nervous about the whole thing and it really was a life saver!!!
