Blood and Protein in Urine

And they have not mentioned anything about a possible bladder or kidney infection... it is rare, but sometimes you don't have the typical symptoms...

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy - it's so exciting! I will be 40 weeks on Sunday!
At 34 weeks, my little bundle was weighing near 6 lbs. Remember, they are only estimating based on the measurements they get from your ultrasound. My husband was an oz. shy of 10 lbs. when he was born, so I've been worried about having a large baby ever since we found out we were having a boy!
As far as the blood and protein in your urine... I wouldn't panic before asking your Dr. questions as to what it could mean. It could be something as simple as "are you drinking enough fluids to stay hydrated?" I've had a couple of times that this was the case and they just reminded me to drink plenty of water. Researching on the internet after your appointment can drive you crazy with all the information that is out there and can cause you to feel more stressed and scared. Don't put yourself through that... your doctor is there for a reason, and if they are monitoring you and completing tests on you, they'll find out what is going on!
Try to stay positive, listen to your doctor, and ENJOY being pregnant!

My second child gave me blood and protein in my urine from about 24 weeks on. She was big as well (almost 10 pounds at birth) 2 days before she was born my urine was almost pure blood!!! It resolved after I had her. You may also be having minute kidney stones. It is common with pregnancy (at least all 3 of mine)

Hi H., I hope that you are doing ok. I'm wondering, have they checked you for gestational diabetes? I developed it when I was carrying my twins. It caused one of the babies to be significantly larger than the other. That is one of the side effects, a large baby. As with anyone who has diabetes, blood and protein in the urine are signs of high sugar levels...If your drs haven't checked for this, I would be very demanding that they did so. You probably have a bladder infection.

I was gonna say maybe kidney stones. I've heard that with all the extra calcium we ingest during pregnancy (in the vitamins, foods and of course the bottles of tums for heart burn) I've heard kidney stones in pregnancy are quite common.

Hope that all the testing that you have comes back completely normal. I know its scary and hard to wait on this really vital info.

I dont know. I wouldnt worry too much about it. I seem to have protein and blood in my urine every time its ever tested and no doctor has ever cared. I think a little bit is normal. Good luck.

to me that was a bladder infection, but it also showed preeclampsia. i was rushed to L&D and induced. you may need to be rechecked for diabetes

My daughter went through years of this when she was a toddler.

She would have minor symptoms of a bladder infection, the unrine stream was less than normal or sometimes it burned.They would say she had traces of blood or protien in her urine when doing the test in the doctor's office but not a bladder infection. Then I would take her home and 3 weeks later she would be back in for even worse symptoms. This time they would say she had an infection. we went through this for 3 years, every 6 months.

You have to have a certain number of bacterial count in the urine before they will call it "an infection", I think 50,000, if I remember correctly.
She only had 30,000 count so they said it wasnt an infection. But it would always turn into one. Seems to me the bacteria was there, and it just kept growing until the colony was large enough for them to give Antibiotics. That would reduce the colony, but never eradicate it. So a UTI can be one problem associated with it.

Usually they can 'culture' the urine to see if anything grows.

She had a urine test last month (age 13 now) and they said she had protien in her urine (level 2). But no UTI infection. Protien in the urine above 3 can signal kidney problems. How much protien did you have? and ask, what was the bacterial count in the urine?

Don't get too worried about bladder cancer! I highly doubt you have that. It is much, much more likely something else. Could be pre eclampsia, but it could even be hypertention or too many heavy metals in the body.Those are easily taken care of. Don't fear. Take it easy, it will all work out, you will give birth to a beautiful baby.

I know a few ladies who have had 10 pound babies, and all seemed to go well - no complications more than maybe tearing during birth. It sounds like they are keeping close tabs on you, so I would ask more questions in order to know more what is going on and why they are doing the tests. If you read in pregnancy books, it's not uncommon to have blood or protein in the urine. Our bodies are pretty out of whack during pregnancy, in my opinion. Ask more questions and try to remain calm.

My son is 3 weeks old and around 35 weeks, I had two visits that showed protein in my urine, but had no other symptoms of preeclampsia, so on the second visit, they tested for a urinary tract infection. My third visit, my urine was negative for protien and the UTI culture came back negative as well. So, I still don't know why I had protein in my urine, it just went away and I had a healthy delivery and baby at 37 weeks. Don't be too scared. This may go away on it's own too.

H. - as someone who was diagnosed with cancer right after the birth of my daughter, I can tell you the internet is NOT a good place while you're awaiting a diagnosis of something. It's hard to decipher good from poor information sources, and something like this can have so many route causes.

Blood and protein in the urine can be many things. Have they referred you to a Urologist to find out for sure?

Be persistent with the doctors until you know for sure what's causing it. Try not to let the stress of it get to you - it will drive you crazy. I know - for 4 weeks, I was crazy trying to figure things out.
