My daughter woke up this moring and it seems she has a blister on her upper lip. It looks like a sucking blister like when she was first born. Does anyone know why babies get this and what causes it? She also keeps licking and sucking on her top lip, how can I get her to stop? Could the nipple size she is using be too small ? Any sugestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who gave me great advice. I tried switching the level of her nipple but it just made her drown in milk to the point where the next bottle she wouldnt even take until i switched it back and then basically forced her to drink from it so she would realize that it was her old one again.. She is still geting the cut and blister on her lip in the same spot if anyone has any ideas on how I can deal with this until she is bigger and can tolerate the next stage nipple I would greatly appreciate more advice.
Thanks again
T.

Is she working really hard to drink her bottles? You could try a bigger nipple size and see if she can handle it, you will know if she can't...she will be dribbling all over and/or gulping the milk.

Are her lips dry? She could have chapped lips. My daughter did when she was a baby and I just used Vaseline and Chapstick Overnight on her lips for a few nights and that did the trick. I put it on AFTER she was sleeping so she wasn't aware of it and therefore didn't lick it off. Your daughter's probably licking and sucking it because she can feel it and it may be a little sore. I'd say watch it for a few days and try changing the nipple and the using Vaseline and if that doesn't work, call the pediatrician. Also, does anyone in contact with her have cold sores? They are contagious. Basically, when in doubt, call the doctor and at least talk to the nurses there. They are usually very knowledgeable and helpful and that's what they're there for!

I think it could be the latch or possibly how she's sucking. My youngest son was breastfed. And I think he had this a little bit when he was really little too. Don't worry about her sucking and licking on her top lip...it will pass. I used to get on my oldest son, when he was a baby to stop sucking his top lip. But no matter what I did he still would do it when he wanted to. My efforts where only met by frustration.

It sounds like it could just be a 'nursing blister' both bottle fed and breastfed babies can get them. Same thing as she had when she was a newborn. You can rub a little Vaseline on it but it probably doesnt bother her.
