My son is turing 6 in July when it is usually pretty darn hot. We tend to try and plan his party to be an indoor event just to keep kids and parents from over heating. In the past we have done "Chuckie Cheese, My Gym, Under the Sea and Jumpin Jammin". He would like an Indiana Jones themed party which I think would be fun. We do have the Eagle Rock Park or our large backyard as resources as I feel like I have run out of the indoor options, but how to have a cool party and stay cool at the same time is the challenge. I would love to hear ideas to make this a great day. Thank you in advance!
Have a animal show in your backyard. The animal keeper will bring small animals that your son and friends can pet. It is fun and education.
My friend had a great party for her 7 year old with water theme - which could go with your indiana jones adventure! She had rented a water slide inflatable, had some kiddie pools, squirt guns, and a slip and slide. Good luck no matter wath you decide!
Adding to the previous suggestion, you can consider the L.A. Zoo. they have shady areas you can gather your guests and the children can see all their favorite animals. Also consider having an outdoor party earlier in the day, before the heat really gets strong, or late afternoon/evening, after the strong heat. Have fun!
I bet if use your back yard, you could do an Indiana Jones-ey party replete with water features (bathing pools or strategically placed mister hoses). Warn parents to send change of clothes, and you're off! and as someone else said, plan the timing around the heat of the day.
Growing up one of 4 kids, my parents did amazing things with a minimum of materials and cash - we children filled in ALL the blanks with imagination, and never understood we were 'ecomonically deprived'
I can see: a treasure hunt (like a scavenger hunt, with clues, or just telling the children that 'somewhere' in the yard is the _________ that has been hidden for 400 years.. . ..
I can see: a rope swing (is there a decent sized tree in your yard?) - and water pistols or water balloons handy to see how wet the other children can get the adventurer. . .while they wait for their turn to swing across the river "filled with pirahnas"
I can see: cupcakes with 'treasures' baked inside, or the clues to where that buried treasure is, tucked inside a boughten one.
I can see: almost like a "geo-cache" hunt - with yucky finds as well as the eventual treasure (imagine toy snakes smeared with green jello in a bucket under a canopy of leaves, or cold, cooked spaghetti in water under a rock that you can't lift up very far. . ..)
maybe mid-party or at the end, there can be a cool-down-break in the house with frozen snacks and rest before running amuck once again outside. .
you get my drift? If you are crafty/handy, you can make a lot of these things. If you are not so handy, you have a couple of months to squirrel cool (and inexpensive)things away whenever you run across them and compile a great bunch of activities and 'treasures' for your party.

Hello. A good friend of mine had a beach/bon fire party for his son. It was sort of a pot luck & they had tents. And they took those mesh tents as well to keep the food in and everyone who went prety much took their own chairs & beach toys. It was great. Seal Beach has a nice stretch of bon fire pits if you like that if not the regular beach would work the same. Good luck~
How about an outdoor water party at your house? We did this for my daughter's birthday in August and it was a huge hit! We put out little kiddie pools filled with water toys, a slip n slide, tons of water balloons, buckets of water, we put the hose on the slide of our play structure, etc. We had to tear the kids away to eat and have cake - they were having so much fun! The parents can get wet or not. We kept one area of the yard dry for anyone who didn't want to get wet or for kids or were taking a break and wanted to dry off. Best of all, we were able to keep the pools up and our kids played in them for days afterward. And it was cheap! All the gear cost about $50.

Well a bowling party is good too. They take care of everthing and you can have fun with the kids playing. Its cool in side and they let you decorate the room with party stuff. Have a great 6th b-day.
