Birthday Gift Idea Needed for a Very Special Person. My Mom.

My mother is a very special person to me. Last year for her birthday I purchased tickets for her and a friend to go to the broadway musical show "The Color Purple" in New York City. I am at a loss at what to do this year. I have never really been the spender when it comes to buying for birthday's, but my mom has really been there for me. She helped me so much when I had my daughter, and watched her while I went to work. I am not working outside the home anymore, so she is not here as much now. She means everything to me, and I want to do something special for her this year. She is always the one to do for others before she ever does for herself. She is not a spa type of woman, so I need other ideas besides that.

Hi C.! My husband bought my mom and myself Ugg slippers for becoming a new mom and grandmother. I know slippers sound so cliche but these slippers are the best EVER! My mom would definitely agree. You can get them at Nordstroms or just go to the website and have them sent. Just an idea. Good Luck!

make her a photo album with writing in it. perhaps a poem or something. it doesn't have to be spendy. my daughter drew a picture of my (crayons etc) and i just loved it. i think she would love to have your words about "i remember when you brushed my hair and took me to baseball... and i remember seeeing you there... " and how that made you feel as a kid and what you love about her.. major details. how you think about her. what you love about her face, her hands, her voice. how she helps you. how she can make you feel great when you are stressed. . i have to tell you.. if my mom was half as great as yours sounds.. you are very lucky and should tell her. a play, she can get that herself.. but a book with pictures.. she will look at it over and over again.

How about a charm bracelet with little charms to represent the special things/interests/people in her life? It is something you can add to in the years to come.

I know the feeling...my mom's birthday is coming up pretty soon and I'm always at a loss for what to get her. To add to that, I have to watch my spending as I'm not working full time anymore! So, here's my suggestion...make something! I'm working on a photo collage for my mom...I found a really neat photo collage frame at Michael's for under $15, and I'm painting it in colors to match her house. My son who is five is helping and it will have both his and my daughter's fingerprints all over it...literally. My mom lives far enough away that she doesn't get to see her grandchildren as often as she would like, so I know this is something she'll enjoy! Even if you aren't the crafty type, think about writing her a letter or a poem or something to let her know how much you love her and how influential she has been on your life. It's funny how the things that don't cost you much can be the things that moms like to get the best! Good luck!

One year for Christmas I bought my mom the book Chicken Soup for the Mothers Soul (which I absolutely love the chicken soup books) and then I wrote a story about my mom from my childhood and inserted it in the book and wrote her a note about how much she meant to me and if I was writing a chicken soup story this is what I would put in the book. Another thing I did one year was I had my kids pictures taken, I bought a big flower arrangement and got about 6-10 of those flower picks that hold the cards and I stuck all the new pictures in the picks and then into the basket of flowers, just some ideas, good luck.

Does your mom have a favorite charity? Make a donation in her name. If she is like my mom with soooo many purses, trinkets, pictures......she might appreciate the donation. Each birthday for my mom and dad I sponser an animal in their name at their favorite organization

http://www.tdscats.com/

T&D’s rescue receives animals in need from private individuals, government agencies, zoos, and other refuge organizations. They provide a permanent home for these animals and open each summer to share their beauty with you. Over 200 abused, mistreated, or unwanted animals call T&D’s home, including over 60 felines (lions, tigers, cougars, leopards, bobcats, servals, and jungle cats). Other animals, bears, fox, deer, coyotes, wolf-dogs, raccoons, lemurs, parrots, and others have also found their way to T&D. Even a loving camel! This is a really great place and they are in constant need of donations. Please check out the link.

Hi C.,
what about making a photo book of all your special memories together as a family, you could even create a bound book with pages of your favorite photos. That would be something that she would have forever to remember you and your daughter and the times that you've shared...
I think "Shutterfly.com" can do this or "snapfish.com" or "Kodak.com" would be a great starting place with lots of ideas!
Sounds like you have a great mom!! Good luck!

C.,
This past year I took a whole lot of photos from my childhood, scanned them into my computer and set them to music (a special song that means a lot to my mother & I), the pictures were of myself, some were with my Mom others with my siblings. I processed it through my moviemaker program (Windows Movie maker it is pretty much drag and drop) then saved it to a DVD. I printed a collage of PICS for the DVD case and gave her that for her birthday. She now has to show it to everyone that stops over. Her Birthday was in September, it was on during Christmas and New Years at my parents home. I am not a computer Whiz and this was my first attempt at making any kind of movie on my computer but it was pretty easy, what was a bit difficult was the timing of pictures. It wasn't until after I had burned her DVD (I have a copy as well, my Mom is in her mid 70's and I want something to watch when she is gone) that I realized that you can split frames with the program (you could put little video bits of yourself now telling her your feelings for her, probably best done during an instrumental part of the song) , I don't know how difficult or easy that part is as I have only made 1 more movie since then.
It's just an idea. Maybe it will work for you.
Good Luck and know that even if you give your Mom a handprint in Clay it will be the best gift you have ever given her. No matter how old we get it is not what we give our parents, but the thought behind it.

Several years ago I made my mother a scrapbook. I made up questions for her children and grandchildren to answer about my mother. The answers to the questions were put throughout the album. It was really neat so see the different answers because the people answering them were from 2 to 40+ years old. All the questions were about special memories each person had of my mother.

Each of my mother's children and grandchildren were given pages to decorate with photos, artwork, quotes, etc... I found old pictures from her childhood, her report cards from highschool, etc... I even found the receipt from the hospital when my sister was born in 1960. We took babybooks and quoted things she had written. It was a lot of fun and she loved it.

Hello C.,
I took my mom to a champagne brunch last year for mothers day. We toasted each other a had a wonderful brunch. I brought her flowers and had a picture reprinted and framed of us when I was like 3 years old. I don't know if that helps but we had a great time and my mom loved it. Good luck!

Why not start her a collection. I started my mom a hummel collection a few years back. I always remembered her saying as I grew up oh I want a hummel. So now it is so easy for me every birthday, christmas, mothersday I just get her 2 hummels. She loves them and one day when I have them I will remember how much they meant to her.

A couple of ideas of things that I have given my mom...ticket for an air balloon ride, tea pot and tea from amazon, and a minature rose bush in a pretty pot also from amazon-this is a plant that will continue to bloom. Also, my mom just loves to go to shopping with me, so taking time to take her shopping for a day seems to be one of her favorite treats. Good luck.
