My in-law family gave me what I felt was the best gift they could have ever given us for our daughter.
DIAPERS DIAPERS DIAPERS.
I don't believe I bought diapers for about six months. And I was able to buy diapers on sale and with coupons for the next six months. IT WAS GREAT!
Hi C.!
My daughter just turned one last month and some of our favorite gifts included shape sorters (we didn't have any of these and they are great!) a push toy that she can pull up on and walk (she's still working on walking), blocks, clothes, books (Hippos go Berserk! :)) and a new car seat. Since her birthday is so close to Christmas, we requested no new toys, but we still got a few. She also got two big boxes of diapers, which is always helpful.
Happy birthday to your little one!
Hilary
I make jewelry for little girls and it's really inexpensive so if they lose it you haven't lost very much. It's really cute and hip. I can also personalize the jewelry. And if they break it I will fix it. It's just an idea for something special for a little girl to keep every year. I have a lot of grandparents who like to get them for granddaughters every year on their birthday. It's a lot better than paying $40 or more at department stores. Just a thought.
My husband and I always like to give experiences as gifts: a trip to the zoo, aquarium, children’s museum, etc, and we encourage our family to contribute to our daughter’s college fund, but some just have to wrap something.
Below I listed some of my daughter’s favorite gifts she’s received from friends and family.
A few of her favorite books were:
All God’s Creatures, by Karen Hill
Dear Zoo: A Lift-the-Flap Book, by Rod Campbell
The Going to Bed Book and The Belly Button Book, both by Sandra Boynton
Who Do You Love? A Touch and Feel Book, by Margaret Wang
Received around her 1st birthday and still plays with at age 3½:
Fisher Price - Laugh & Learn Stride-to-Ride Learning Walker
Around the Block Walker by Parents
Sand shovels and pails
Bath toys
Fisher-Price Little People Animal Sounds Farm
Fisher-Price Little People Noah’s Ark
Would still play with if we hadn’t had to throw it away (potty accident):
Aquadoodle Sing N’ Doodle by Spin Master Toys
Wish we’d gotten sooner:
Naturally Playful Summertime Play Center by Step2
Something we wish we’d gotten:
WaterWheel Play Table by Step2
One more tip:
I wrote a letter to my daughter about her first year on her first birthday, started one on her second, and still need to write her third, but I know these will be fun to share with her one day.
Wishing your daughter a very happy birthday!
Hi C.,
I also have a little girl turning one and with an older sister the thought of having MORE toys is overwhelming. A thought, do you have any personalized music CD's for her. Look at www.kiddosdelight.com, if you interested in one.

Outdoor stuff. Even if you have a pool in your back yard or neighborhood a small inflatable one is one of our favorites especially when I'm not really wanting to get in the water add a few squirting animals and it's a fun late morning/afternoon activity. Bubbles are fun at all ages. My son loved and still loves Sandra Boynton books.
Something that I really loved when my son turned one was when people gave us gift cards. I know that isn't very original, but it was awesome when it came time for something he really needed like winter clothes and things like that. I also really liked all the learning toys and color wonder stuff so that he can play and learn at the same time!
You already have a boy and a girl, so you probably have plenty of toys for your child to play with. I loved the idea of an "event" - tickets to the zoo or something.
My daughter just turned 1 and I have a boy already. Honestly, I was a tom boy growing up and I have had great fun with my boy. I had no idea what to get my daughter. We had a small party with close friends (about 5) and every single person brought her a babydoll. Honestly, it had not even occurred to me to get her a babydoll. They all knew that and felt like she needed some babydolls/girl gifts. I thought it was sweet that they thought of it.
So, even if your daughter is sharing toys with her siblings, you might want her to have special things that are just her own - like baby dolls, maybe some new clothes. A swimsuit.

for my grand-daughter who just turned one we got her word world DVD's and they make toys for it. They are wonderful even the 4 year old watches them. I helps to start them on an early path to learning. We also got her a train toy from toys r us that teaches numbers, shapes and colors. With y 4 year old I requested unique learning toys only.
Hi C., I found for my grandson a gift that everyone loved, specially his dad and mom.
I order him a book personalized with a fantastic storytelling, fun and everything was made thinking on him and his family. The author of the book asked me the name of the babies parents, their favorite things to do with him and then the author wrote a lovely story telling with beautifull illustrations. A gift to keep forever, to remember.
I didn't want to give away just a toy, they will get thousend of them. I meant it to be special and it was!
I can give you the place were I made him the book if you are interest. Let me know.
All the best,
J..
I tell family members that savings bonds are the most preferred gifts.
For a first birthday I always give Megabloks. I think they are around $20. They have a pink set for girls. It's always a hit and it's something parents can do with there kids.
When my son turned 1, I asked for no gifts, but everyone still wanted to get him something. So I told them clothes or books, no toys. He had (and still has) more than enough toys, but books and clothes, especially, he could always use! It was also time to get his new carseat, so my parents and my inlaws gave us money (however much they wanted, we didn't specify an amount) to go towards his new carseat. They really loved being able to help get him something he really needed, and that would keep him safe.
As far as books...anything by Eric Carle or Dr. Seuss. My son loves the texture books, or any books that make sounds.
