well good luck with the baby ( & the marriage) i sort of know where you are coming from...as far as birth control you can start taking it right after you give (thats when i did) i take the generica pill (it only costs $5) ive been baby free fofr 3 years & counting (since my son was born) good luck...just dont get caught up in names thats what you're paying for you are definately gonna need the $$ for other things like the baby (& the wedding) :D

both of my girls were scheduled csections (big babies lol), but i went back on the pill right after i had them (my OB gave me the prescription when he discharged me). if they tell you you can resume having sex before you've taken a full month of them, you should use a backup method (condoms).

also, i don't know if you plan to nurse. i was nursing my first daughter so instead of the pills i had been on they gave me a low dose one that was safe to take while nursing (when i stopped nursing i went back on my original one).

your best bet would probably be to ask your OB what they recommend (pills, condoms, etc). good luck with the baby :)

T.,

Low dose birth control pills or condoms are probably your best bet while nursing.

If you have used a cervical cap or diaphragm in the past, make sure you have it re-fitted, because it won't necessarily fit correctly after the baby.

From what I understand Depo is a little risky, because if you have nast side effects, there's nothing you can do to reverse the shot, just siffer through it for three months. Every body is different, so it's hard to know what your side effects will be beforehand.

I've heard good things about the nuva-ring. My sister uses it, and loves it. She says it's really easy to insert and remove, and she can't feel it there at all.

The patch sounds like a good option if you're okay with the hormones in birth control pills, but have a hard time remembering to take it every day.

I'll tell you up-front, I'm getting an IUD put in when I deliver this baby. I will be almost 32, and am positive that this will be my last pregnancy. However, I don't know that I'd recommend you going the same route. IUD's can cause uterine perforation in extremely rare cases. This kind of thing could affect your ability to carry another baby in the future. You're only 22, and life is long. You never know if you're going to change your mind about getting pregnant 5, 10, 12 years down the road. My advice would be to avoid using anything that has even a tiny chance of negatively affecting your fertility.

Congratulations on your upcoming arrival, and your wedding! Good luck making your decision.

Hi T.!

Just thought i'd share a personal experience with you. Right after I had my daughter, the doctors suggested the Depo shot. They gave my first dose the day i left the hospital, and said it would be great. I have Polycystic Ovaries, and let me tell you, this definately was not the best choice for me. The cysts on my ovaries got much worse, and in just 9 months on the shot... i bled for the first 3... and gained about 40 lbs. The doctors said afterwards this was not the best choice for me, and made the change after much complaining. I am now on the Yasmin pill(which is great for PCOS), and it's working out great for me. Good luck with the little one, and in making your choice!

HEY T.,
MY NAME IS H. AND I'M A SINGLE MOM OF TWO BOYS. I JUST WENT THROUGH A DIVORCE SO I KNEW IT WAS TIME TO THINK ABOUT MAKING SURE I DIDN'T GET PREGNANT AGAIN. OVER THE PAST 7 YEARS I HAVE TRIED ALMOST EVERY KIND OF BIRTH CONTROL OUT THERE AND BELIEVE ME, IT WAS NO PICNIC. AFTER CAREFUL CONSIDERATION AND ALOT OF RESEARCH, I FINALLY OPTED FOR THE I.U.D. NOW THERE ARE TWO KINDS; THE PARAGUARD THAT HAS NO HORMONES IN IT AND THE MIRENA THAT DOES HAVE HORMONES. THE MIRENA IS GOOD FOR UPTO FIVE YEARS WHERE THE PARAGUARD IS FOR 10. BECAUSE I'M ALMOST 30, I REALLY FELT THE PARAGUARD WAS RIGHT FOR ME. IT'S AN EASY PROCESS. THIS GOES FOR BOTH, IT'S A ONE-STOP PROCEEDURE. NOW THE SIDE EFFECTS ARE DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE. FOR ME, I HAD IT REALLY BAD FOR THE FIRST 4-5 MONTHS AFTER HAVING IT DONE. MEANING THE CRAMPING AND BLEEDING AND VERY PAINFUL OVULATIONS. HOWEVER, MY DR TOLD ME TO STICK IT OUT A LITTLE AND I DID AND BOY DO I LOVE IT NOW. NOW WORRIES ABOUT GETTING PREGNANT. IT'S BEEN ABOUT A YEAR AND MY BOYFRIEND AND I LOVE THIS. I'M MORE REGULAR NOW THEN EVER BEFORE. NOW THE MIRENA COULD STOP YOUR PERIOD ALL TOGETHER AFTER ABOUT 3-4 MONTHS, BUT THEN YOU'D NEVER KNOW AND YOU'LL ALWAYS WONDER. SO I HOPE I HELPED AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BABY. WHO KNOWS, AFTER HAVING IT, HOLDING IT AND BONDING WITH IT, YOU MAY WANT MORE. TALK TO YOU LATER.

Just a word of caution on the IUD. If I remember right, it prevents the fertilized egg from implanting on the wall of the utereris. So depending on when you consider life to begin, you may not want to choose this approach, as it seems to be an "after conception" type of birth control, and not a "prevent conception" type. Nobody really emhasizes that when teaching about methods of birth control.

Best wishes with your coming arrival!

First of all, are you planning on breast feeding because that makes a BIG difference in what you can do. The horomone levels in all birth control devices will effect your milk production. It will make it harder for your milk supply to increase. If so, then most docs suggest using the mini pill once your milk comes in, but you have to take it every day at the same exact time or it can be ineffective. If your not nursing then you can use whatever you like.

Congrats on the new baby. After I had my son I went back on the pill but found that I kept forgetting. So I recently got the Mirena IUD which is good for 5 years! It was a simple procedure and I have not had any real problems with it aside from some minor spotting the first couple of months. I would never go back!!!!!

When I was on birth control I *loved* Depo Provera. The only side effect I remember having was the missed periods (I'm not sure why they're called that as I sure wasn't missing it!). I got a shot once every three months and that was it. The doctor's office would send me a post card a few weeks before I was due to get the shot again so remembering wasn't difficult either. I only had one partner at the time so other 'safe sex' precautions weren't needed.

I was on the pill for awhile, not for birth control but to regulate my periods, and I didn't like that because I would forget to take a pill and not be sure when I was supposed to take the other colored pills. If you're good at remembering to take medication this is a good alternative.

The patch looks like a good alternative as well. Put it on and forget it, which works for me, but you have to remember when to replace it.

Then, if you really want to be sure, make sure he always wears a condom. Between the two the odds of you getting pregnant again are pretty slim as long as you're using them correctly. =)

Hello, I have two sons, 4 and 6 years old but I take every day the Yasmin birth control pill which was perscribed by my gynocologist, It works wonderful. I will continue it until we decide to have our third child. My doctor told me that when I want to start planning another child I should be off the pill for a few months before trying to become pregnant again. I'm happy with it and probably wouldn't stop taking it or switch to another birth control. It is easy to take a tiny little pill every day. Good luck in finding your birth control but I'd speak with your doctor.

A few things on the IUD. If you have abnormal paps then you may not be able to get it. I have not had a normal pap so I was unable to get the mirena. I would not be able to remember to take pills so i opted for the Nuva Ring. I love it!! it is very easy to insert and I don't feel anything even during intercourse. If you dont want to worry about pills i would recommend the IUD (if eligible) or the nuva ring.

I got the depo shot at my 6 week checkup. I love it. At first I got my period and it lasted a month, but it was really light. I have been on it for 4 months now and after that first month I havent gotten my period at all. As long as you exercise and eat mostly healthy foods you won't gain weight. I haven't gained a pound, in fact I have lost 13! The only thing is that you have to make sure to take calcium and vitamin Dsupplements because the depo can make your bones thin. But I love it. I just go once every three months, get a shot, and don't have to worry about it for another 3 months.

Hi,
first of all congrats on your future baby. You should check with your OB what would work for you as far as birth control. I started using Nuva Ring and I love it so maybe you would want to get some info on that. Its easy to use and you dont have to worry about a daily pill. You keep it in for 3 weeks and take it out for 7 days. Good luck!

I am 26 with my first baby who came on May 29th, my doctor recommended Merina (an IUD) and it has been great for me. Insurance covered most of it and I do nothave to worry about it. I am someone who always forgot to take my pill which at this point I am not ready for number 2 just yet. I know there is a slight risk with an IUD but each method comes with its risk. I am sure your doctor can recommed something good for you.

Whatever you do, don't get the depo shot. You will bleed a lot longer than normal after giving birth and you won't be able to lose weight, and may even gain! I'm on LoEstrin. It's that 24 day cycle instead of 21 days, so you only have to take four placebo pills. Also, your period lasts only about 3 to 4 days..

hi T.,
congrats to you and i recommend depo provera aka the depo shot. it is 100% effective and you only get a shot every 3 months. the flip side of this is that you may not get a period only spotting. some women don't mind this but others do. so it really is a personal decision, but i guarantee you won't get pregnant on it. also if you were going to use the pill you can't take that if you are planning to breasfeed your baby. good luck and kepp us posted on how everything turns out.

Hi T.-
You could consider and IUD. There is the Mirena with some type of low dose hormone and the Paragard without hormones. I got the Paragard a couple months ago and besides a bit heavier period the first time I got it after insertion, I have no complaints. If you can use bc with hormones, I would suggest the Mirena as I know it has the potential to lessen or make your periods non-existent. Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming baby.

I am not a very organized person, and I tend to be scatterbrained. So having to take a pill at the same time every night just did not work for me. I am using the birth control patch called ortho evra, and it works great. I change it once a week for three weeks, and then I go on my period. The only problem with the patch is that it leaves a dark sticky residue on your skin after you take it off, but it is easily removed with alcohol. But if you are breatfeeding, there aren't many options for you. I had to stay on a pill for the 7 months that I breastfed, and then switched to the patch. Be sure to talk to you doctor about that.

There is an IUD caller Merina (sp?) You can either have a five year one or a ten year one. This specific IUD is for woman who have had children. I had the five year one put in after my son was born and I coulden't be happier with it. There are very few side effects, and it is very effective. Ask your dr. about it and they will be able to give you more info. Good luck.

When I was first going the birth control route I tried the pills first. Well those hormones messed me up so bad that I had to stop after a month. I then switched to an IUD (I have the 10 year hormone-free paragard one) and have never looked back! I've had it in for about 5 years now and will probably be having it removed in the next year or so to go for baby number 2. I haven't had any noticable side effects but I know some people who have. If you want a truly easy form of birth control that you don't need to think about, I highly suggest an IUD. Set it and forget it! lol
