My sister is thinking about going back on birth control. She has taken the pill, and the patch method. Both have made her get sick and need to call out of work because of it. She is thinking of going on the IUD birth control method. Are they any side effects to it? DO you get sick because of it? and does it hurt going in? My sister has very sensitive skin. She has to use die free detergant, color free or clear shampoo. I my self am on the ring and love it, but dont think my sister would because I get headaches every other month or so when i put the ring in for about a day. Any advice would be great!

So What Happened?

After reading the all the replys to my sister, she has decided she may go back on the mini pill. She does not want to get the IUD. It does cost alot of money and where she works, does not have insurance. And if her body does not like the IUD she what have to shell out more money to get it out. Thank you all so much for your help.

I have an IUD and I love it. The first 3 months your body has to adjust so you may bleed alot but if you can get past that it is worth it. I have lots of female problems including endometriosis and my GYN told me that the IUD could possibly help with it. I've had mine since May and I'm glad I did it.

If your sister has many sensitivities, I suggest she proceed with caution. I would never use it, but a good friend of mine did and she gained a tremendous amount of weight, suffered from headaches, monster pms, and countless yeast infections. She ended up having to spend some time in the hospital. I swore off that mess many, many years ago. Besides, I don't think it should be the sole responsibility of the woman to always sacrifice her body for the sake of two peoples pleasure. In the future, you may want to consider natural methods like the cycle ring or wild yam tablets.

Be Well,

My sister in law had the Mirena IUD and did not like it. It gave her too many hormones at once and made her very moody. She said it did not hurt going in but she had cramps for about a day or so afterwards. Also the man can feel the threads or so I have heard. The doctor can trim them but she said they couldn't get them short enough so that her husband couldn't feel them. She had it removed after only 3 or 4 months. However, we are trying to get pregnant with our second child now and I think I will try it after I deliver. I have been on the pill for about 6 years now and want to give my body a break from it. I think I have seen an ad for a non-hormonal IUD but I could be wrong. It is also very expensive if your insurance doesn't cover it. About $500-$800 dollars.

It's been almost 1 year since I got my IUD (Mirena) and I wish I had done it sooner. I can't remember the last time I had a period. There's a little discomfort having it inserted but it goes away. I was tired of taking pills and had to do something.

I like the mirena. It last 5 yrs,no side effects and the only discomfort I experienced was the slight cramping while they were putting it in and some light spotting the rest of that day.I have mine waiting on me at my doctors office but they like for you to come in on your cycle b/c its easier but I always start and stop on the weekend.

I have had an IUD for 3 years I have my period every 3 months, I do get PMS still every month my pms symptoms have been worse since I got it but I dont think thats actually related to the IUD I got it right after I had my son I think it has everything to do with that lol. its unconfortable going in but dosnt hurt, its about the same as your average pap . my hubby cant feel it and it is not a form of abortion , it dosnt " knock it off" the thing doesn't move. it has a 99.9% protection rate if you do get pregnant while useing one you need to get the IUD removed asap there is a slim chance of it causing birth defects if it is left in.
here is the web md listing for IUD

if she is getting sick from pills then she may be like me. i went to the mirena iud. i would sugguest not going there. the little bit of hormones made me as bad or worse...stomach pains, cramps, moodiness, headaches and chest pains (they would get worse as I got closer to a period). there is not much pain to having an iud inserted...just like getting a yearly. a little cramping afterward but just take midol or pain killer. if i was going to try iud - i would start with 10 year paragard. my friend has had two. i am thinking of getting one but honestly i am not 100% that hormone from mirena was causing problems and dont want to put 800$ thing in me to find out that my body doesnt like the foreign object. plus husband and i have fertility issues and are weighing our odds. good luck with your decision....just remember they say that mirena's hormones are practically not there but something caused me to have the same symptoms as birth control hormones.

If shes so sensitive to all those things it would be best to go natural. You can monitor your temp on a daily basis and your temp will tell you when your more fertile. Ask a OBGYN.

Everyone reacts differently to different birth control. I tried the pill but couldnt remember to take it on time, I tried the Norplant and bleed everyday for six months. I tried the Depo Provera and had regualr periods but spotted every day in between. Gettings my tubes tied wasnt an option for me. After I had my youngest I had to think about my options and I chose the Mirena hormone IUD. I havent had a period at all since. YAY!! The good thing is the hormones go into the uterus not the bloodstream so you dont have the same effects as you would with the pill, the shot, or transdermal inplant. I thought I would bleed like I did with everything else but its been wonderful so far. Of course along with everything there are risks and side effects. I havent had any persay, besides the every once in a while spotting for a day and ovarian pain (it can cause ovarian cysts and obviously has for me but ive always had a problem with cysts. For the benefit outweighs the risk. You can find information online at the Bayer Company who made it. You shouldnt get sick from it as it doesnt go into your bloodstream, it doesnt hurt much going in-just a little pinch. Of course the Mirena is good for five yrs. There are other IUDs like the copper T which is good for 10 yrs but ive heard you have horrible painful periods because of it, there are no hormones to stop periods.

I had the IUD for about two and a half years and only took it out to get pregnant again. I loved it becasue you never have to think about it. I usually have painful menstrual cycles but while they did come every month I barley knew they were there! They would only last three days at the most and I was pain free. I plan on getting another one after I get pregnant and have another baby. Good luck to your sister.

Hey M.! I currently have the ParaGard which is a 10 year IUD (you can leave in up to 10 years or not) and I think it's great you don't have to worry about a pill, ring, patch or anything else! I haven't had any side effects at all! It has no hormones so there is no weight gain or side effects like there are in other birth control w/ hormones. The only thing is if you have bad cramps the ParaGard doesn't help that, but I haven't had any bad cramps or anything! I was on the nuva ring but it gave me headaches and lots of discharge which I couldn't stand! But there is also a mirana which is a 5 year IUD (you can leave it in 5 years or not) which has hormones and does help cramps, one of my friends has is and she has no complaints! I got the ParaGard b/c the Mirana wasn't covered on my insurance. So if she decides to get one if her insurance doesn't cover one check for both! And it doesn't really hurt at all. It takes like 5 min and its like a very mild contraction, and IUD's are mainly for candidates that have had a baby! I am also alergic to latex and betadine and I have sensitive skin too! There are websites for both the Mirana and ParaGard if you are intrested they can tell you advantages and disadvantages and anything you want to know really! But if you want to ask me anything else about it I will be glad to answer! Hope you find what you were looking for! ~R.~

If she can't handle the pill or patch, she'll probably have the same reaction to any hormonal birth control. A regular IUD would probably be okay, because they're just copper, but Mirena has the same hormones as the pill, so I assume it would have the same effect on her. There is a different pill she might try, the "mini-pill" which only has one of the hormones that the regular pill has....I think it has progesterone but not estrogen, although I may have that backwards. Some women that have problems with the regular pill have better luck with that.

My sister's sister-in-law got pregnant 5 years after having the IUD. I use to get sick with Birth Control pills until my doctor put me on Yasmin. I skip the last set of pills to stop my period all together. I have also tried the Nuevo Ring, inserted once a month, but had an adverse reaction to it by gaining weight.
