Binky!! - Louisville,KY

My daughter is 14months old. Probably a little over a week ago, I put her in her high chair for a meal and forgot to take her binky. Didn't think much of it, but now she keeps her binky in one hand and sucks on it in between bites. If she happens into her chair without it, she will eat and about halfway through, will start crying and won't stop until she gets the binky. She goes all day without it at the sitters. Has it at bedtime and periodically at home. Any other time it isn't such a big deal. I'm wondering why all of a sudden it has to be with her to eat, what's going on and how do I stop it? Any thoughts or ideas?

What can I do next?

she could be teething and the binky helps with the pain

stop the habit...She likes it and it is her security that's all believe me :)
Next time try to be sure when you put her in her high chair that she hasn't had her binky near by...I'll bet she forgets she had it in her chair that one time.

oops! The binky helps facilitate the pacing of the meal and, therefore, digestion. If you want to take if away at mealtime-try slowing down the pace.

honestly you will have to just take it away and let her cry. You can try to divert her attn but it may take a few days to get her to stop expecting it at feeding time. Our doc told us that children start to develop a habit around a year old. It gets harder and harder to break the habit as they get older. good luck

Do you need to stop it? I am surprised at how many people think that a security item can just be taken away. Even adults have security items or things they do to calm themselves. The using it during meal times is probably temporary....I wouldn't worry about it in the least. They are only little once.

I know it sounds impossible, but get rid of it. I read somewhere that doctors recommend you give it the boot by 6 months. My my son had his unil he was almost 2 ( oops! ) and after the first few days it was a non issue. I just threw them away because i couldnt trust myself to not give it to him. good luck!

My daughter had one for about that long. She got a few teeth and bit a hole in the nipple of the pacifier and it aggravated her so she didn't want it anymore. Most kids will give up the "binky" on their own.

I wouldn't worry about it unless she is still dependent on it for comfort when she's more than 3 yrs old.
