Bigger Diapers?

So we have a big kid...31lbs at 21 months and it appears that regular diapers only go to a size six. Not really a problem during the day, but at night he pees through and I am constantly washing pj's and he is waking up cold. We are trying to limit drinks later in the evening, but I don't want him going to bed thirsty and being miserable. He sleeps well and eats ok during the day. Like most kids his age, he can be picky, but never turns down a drink. Any thoughts on keeping him drier at night? I know eventually we will be working on potty training, but not quite yet, so switching to underjams or anything like that doesn't seem like the right choice. BTW he's wearing size 5 during the day and size six at night right now. thanks in advance, mamas!

We use Huggies Overnights. They have size 5--they hold more in than regular diapers. I can only get them at my local grocery store--Target doesn't seem to have them. Here in Oregon they're available at Albertson's, Safeway and Fred Meyer.

I didn't see this posted when I looked, but along with nighttime diapers, Goodnights and diaper doubles (I couldn't find those) we just stick a maxi pad in with his diaper and it has worked. (My son has peed through every kind of diaper since he was 4 months old). I used to put in two of them like a letter T but we are now down to just one. Buy the generic brand and its pretty cheep. Hope that helps.

They make diaper doublers (inserts that line the diaper), and other overnight diapers...

Hi L.,
I would stop his drink intake at least 1 1/2 before bed so that he can be changed right before bed. Then use your diaper along with a night time pull-up or Goodnight pull-up over it. 21 months is still young to be potty trained. For my boys it was 3 years for one and 2 1/2 for the other. When he's ready it will be time. :)

L.,

Are you buying good diapers? Pampers and Huggies really do hold alot better and dont leak. We usually buy store brand diapers but when the kids get older and start to leak we buy Pampers. Maybe buy a box of Pampers just for nights.

Sometimes circumstances force us to do things we weren't planning on doing... in your case, potty training. 21 months isn't too early to begin. He's been walking for sometime and he has some language skills. So let's get him a potty chair and take him potty every time you think you need to go. Modesty on the part of parents goes by the way side during these lessons. But when Dad goes in to the toilet, taking his favorite magazine or newspaper, in goes your son right after Dad is seated, to sit on his potty chair with his book. And the 'boys' have their toilet time. It has worked well through the ages at our house and in my parents house with me and my 3 brothers.

Night time training will take a bit more effort, but going before he goes to bed will help.

Now for the larger sized diapers. Because he is so large, I recommend that you make your own. You can buy diaper flannel, a heavy weight white flannel at Joanne's Fabrics or Pacific Fabrics... cut a square that is 36" in width and length. Sew a rolled hem around the diaper, on all sides. You can double up at night to be extra absorbent. The way you fold a square diaper is like a kite. Place the diaper in front of you so it looks like a diamond. Fold first base to the left of the pitcher's mound, but not to third base. Now bring 3rd base to the base line you created when you folded first base past the pitcher. See the kite? Now fold the catcher up to the pitcher mound. Bring 2nd base down so it's a straigt line between the 1st and 3rd base lines. If this is too big, you can take the catcher's corner in steps to the pitcher, folding twice. You can alson adjust how far you bring 1st base to the pitcher and the same with 3rd base. This will increase the waist size of the diaper. To make them more absorbent, place two unfolded diapers together and then fold as one diaper.

Washing is easy. Always rinse out any solids. Soak in Biz before washing. Use Dreft and Biz in the wash, double rinse and in the first rinse cycle use 1/4 cup of white vinegar (it removes any soap scum and dinge). Rinse a 2nd time. Dry on high heat. What's great about having diapers like these is they make great burp cloths, they can be used for a variety of things now and later.

I'd recommen using plastic or rubber pants over the diapers. You will be using diaper pins. Stick them in a bar of soap that will make them easier to glide through the layers of fabric.

They do have large size pull-ups that might work as well, but they are spendy. It's time to start the potty training for everyone's benefit, especially his!!!

My 2 1/2 year old son has the same issue. We are using size 5 during the day and size 6 at night. However, at night, we include a "diaper doubler". This is an insert that allows extra absorbancy within the diaper. Also, we use Pampers Cruisers (as Huggies exploded more than once).

Regarding the Diaper Doublers, the manufacturer no longer produces them. Babies R Us is trying to produce them or find another manufacturer, as the demand is definitely there.

I found sites that carry the replacement for diaper doublers. Apparently the machine has been dismantled and the product replaced by Medline Double-Ups.
http://www.healthpursuit.com/diaper_doublers.html
http://www.diapersite.com/baby_diapers.htm

The cost is almost double from original product, but the extra convenience of not having to change his bed and reduce laundry goes a long way!

We have the same problem! At bedtime we put my son in a size six Huggies Overnight diaper and then we change his diaper around midnight or 1:00am. I am usually up to go to the bathroom myself or to nurse our baby so this works for us for now. If we don't change his diaper by 2:00am he is usually soaked.
I am going to look for the Diaper Doublers that Jodi mentioned and try those!

Huggies Overnights come in a size 5 and would probably work for you - the suggested weight on size 4 is 22-37 lbs and they work great for us. Sometimes I'm tempted to weigh those soggy diapers in the morning - I swear some of them weigh more than a pound! And my son is dry. :)

We've used Seventh Generation brand diapers at night since my son was little. We did cloth diapers during the day, but they didn't work for nighttime since he would stay wet too many hours.

He's now nearly 23 months, and about 31-33 lbs, and using the size 5 Seventh Gen. The best price is via Amazon's Subscribe and Save program.

Best of luck...

I did a quick search and did not see it listed on your response so thought I would share.

My son used Goodnights. They are great for that bigger child.
There are also protective coverings you can get for the bed. I know that this does not help with the PJ's.

Limit his liquid intake 1 - 2 hours before bedtime.

There is a product called Diaper Doublers that might help. Sort of like a maxi pad that you slip into the diaper at night to increase its absorbancy. (Don't use an actual feminine maxi pad, though. Its waterproof backing will block the diaper itself from absorbing what it should.)

We use one of these in a Huggies Overnights diaper. You can use two if you need to. They are available at some Babies R Us stores, but I order them online from diapersite.com.

We use the Huggies overnights size 6 with our 3yr old, who is 34 lbs, and sometimes use the pull ups over nights. We have also broke him of having to have a cup of water in his bed every night, to having one cup at dinner and then only a small drink before bed, and this has stopped the wetting through during the night! It is SO nice to no longer be washing his bedding EVERY day! good luck!

I feel your pain.. I have a three year old the size of a small seven year old.. We use the "Goodnights" diapers at Target. They are designed for older kids that wet at night and go up to, I think, 76 lbs. My daughter wears them night and day and we love them.

Maybe the size six are just too big, since he's not quite 35 lbs yet (I think they start at 35 lbs, no?). Anyway, we have used Huggies Leak Lock diapers for our son as we had the same problem at night when he was younger, and they have worked like a dream. Don't know what brand you are using, but maybe you could try switching? Babies R Us used to sell diaper doublers, but someone told me these are no longer available.

I don't know if you're up for the trip, or they're there anymore but the Target in Redmond (right off the freeway) has Pampers in size 7 diapers. I had to use some of those when my son was younger. He was nearly 4, not potty trained (lots of setbacks) and too big for just about everything.

Hope this helps,

I would seriously try to limit him liquid intake at least an hour before bedtime. I felt the same way about not wanting my son to be "miserable" or thirsty, but what it came down to was really that it was much easier for me to put him to bed with something to drink, and it had become a part of our routine. NOw, instead of giving him a drink, I give him a little snack while we are reading a bedtime story, and he takes a SIP of water after we brush teeth. Once we started this new routine he forgot all about "needing" to have something to drink before bed. Good Luck!

There are a couple of brands of night time diapers. They're made in larger sizes all the way up to ones that fit a grade schooler. We found them at the end of the diaper section at Fred Meyer's.

We also found that the less expensive brands of diapers did not hold as much as the more expensive brands. Except for the ones that I bought at Costco. I suspect that they were made for Kirkland by one of the name brands.
