I owned a Miele canister model (Flamenco, retail $350) for several years. They work great on hard wood floors but not to great as far as sucking dirt of my carpet. What was nice about the Miele is you can control the amount of suction power. So for cleaner drapes was great as well.

After two years, I finally plunked $$$ on a Dyson. It was 50 dollars more so than the Flamenco but, boy was it worth it. My entire house excluding BR and bathrooms is all hardwood and the Dyson is a monster at sucking up all the sand from my kids feet.

So, Dyson - it's worth the $

I am 100% sold on Rainbows, also. I sold them for a livelihood (second income after hubby's) for 8 years and I have several good used ones if you're interested. I can tell you almost ANYTHING you want to know about them -- good AND bad.

Hey.. I used to clean houses and the Oreck was the best. It is light weight and really has a great suction. Plus a little brush on the sides to get the edges. Some places when you purchase one, you get a free hand held vacuum, and an iron. It is a great bargain even without the nice added bonuses!! 2nd Choice, anything without a bag!

I love my rainbow! A bit price, but I got mine on ebay. No dust b/c the water resivour really gets everything. It also converst easily between wood and carpet. And as my hubby says - will be the vaccuum that I own for the rest of my life b/c of how powerful/durable it is.

I have an Oreck vacuum and I just love it! I also have hardwood floors and it is easy on them. The thing I like best about the Oreck is that it is light and not hard on your back which is an issue for me. It may be a bit more than others but it comes with a great warranty for yearly checks. It also has very good suction which I have found to be a problem with many store brand vacs. I would highly recommend the investment in an Oreck as it will last you a good long time.
Good luck with your decision.

I love my Eureka Mega Boss, and use it on hard floors all the time (I hate sweeping). It works great, has great suction, and is now about 4 years old and still doing the job. It is a bit heavy, which would be my only complaint, but it does have the attachments on board (hose, wand, etc).

Oreck. It self adjusts from carpet (for area rugs) to hardwood. I love it as much as a person can love a vacuum cleaner...

I have a dyson for my rugs, but for my hardwood I like the Swiffer Sweep and Vac. It gets the bigger things and the swiffer on the back gets the dust. It is cheap too, about $25.
