My 7 year old grandson (who lives with me) wets the bed frequently. I limit his nighttime drinking and make sure he uses the bathroom before bedtime. He may be experiencing anxieties stemming from his parents divorce. What else can I do?

What can I do next?

Hey there, as a peds nurse, first of all if he has stress and anxiety from his parents divorce, he needs therapy. I would see a Psychologist for him to talk about his feelings. Alot of times kids that go through things like this start to rebell and get in trouble, they will do things for attention whether it be good or bad attention. Also they make bed wetting alarms that will wake him up when he needs to go. You can ask your pediatrician about this. Good luck, Let me know if you have anymore questions. J.

Hi B.,
My oldest girl used to bed wet about age 7. I limited water and ensured she used the restroom before she went to sleep, this didn't always work. My daughter is a very heavy sleeper, I don't believe she was under any stress at the time. Eventually she just stopped wetting the bed. In order to protect the mattress I did get a plastic sheet to place under her regular sheets and did a few extra loads of laundry. I really didn't worry about it too much.

Try getting an alarm clock in his room and setting it for a certain time. When it goes off tell him to get and up use the bathroom. I knew a couple with a child who had the same problem. I think they even had to put him on some medication. If the alarm clock doesnt work I think i would call the doctor and ask for other suggestions and maybe they will put him on some medication temporarily. Hope this helps

Is this a new occurrence of bedwetting or has he always frequently wet the bed? I ask because it may not be from stress but genetics. All the men in my house,(husband and two sons) were bed wetters until around 8 or 9 years old. My youngest will be 6 next month and also wets the bed frequently. First of all, do not shame him or scold him for it. Usually it is nothing that he can help. Often boys, for some reason, have immature urinary systems. They simply do not get the signal from the bladder to the brain to wake up to urinate.
I have discussed this with my pediatrician several times. We both agree that he will grow out of it in a few years. In the mean time, you are doing the right thing, limiting drinking for several hours before bed and making sure he goes right before bed are definately in the right direction.
Two other ideas is to cut out caffiene. It can also affect the urinary system and cause issues at night. They also make a bedwetting alarm that will wake the child up when he starts going during the night. I do not know about the price of it though. I have not invested in this but I do have mattress covers- waterproof of course, and I do a lot of laundry. My best suggestion is to buy extra sheets and wait it out.
If this has just started consult your pediatrician. There may be other reasons for it that you have not thought of. Good luck and know that you are not alone!
