So ladies...I realize that you can't really have any schedule for a baby so young but I was just curious what time did you put your babies down at five weeks of age?? I'm just curious...I can't really remember around what time my oldest DS went down for the night at this age....I want to say around 9:00 but I just can't remember because all I can remember is him needing to go down at 7:00 starting at about 9 or 10 weeks or else he would literally start screaming inconsolably Thanks Ladies!

What can I do next?

When they went to sleep! Seriously, such an unpredictable age. I just put them down when they went to sleep. If I could, I went to bed also and got up for the next feeding. If not, I went to bed after the next feeding.

When my son was up to 4 weeks old, he would go down at about 9 or 10, but we moved cross country at 4 weeks old and he started going to bed around 12 or 1am. At about 2 months he started going to bed earlier and by 2.5 months he was in bed by 7 every night.

I always made it as close to my bedtime as possible. That way I'd get more sleep at night.

For me, for all three, there WAS no day or night at 5 weeks old, they just nursed around the clock. Wasn't until they were 3 or 4 months where they began to realize it was more interesting to be awake during the day.

So no 'bedtime' at all.

With my first it was totally random - whenever we went to bed. But with my second and third we TRIED to get everyone in bed by the same time - 8pm. My babies woke to feed at least every 3 hours at that age, but "bedtime" was 7:30-8pm ish.

5 weeks is still on the feed at demand age. Baby makes the schedule. At about 3 mos of age, you can try to start tweaking the last feeding time and hope for the best. If you can get 4 to 6 hours after the last feeding of the evening you are on the right track.

whenever she went down. I didn't have her on a schedule at 5 weeks. I recall eating dinner with her in the swing, napping.

I nursed my DD in the night for a long time. It's a personal preference. She woke up, needed a quick feeding and was right back to sleep. I learned to do it half asleep and it worked for us.

At that age my son was still on the 5 hour cycle he was born on-- he'd sleep for 5 hours then nurse 5 or 6 times in the next 5 hours, then sleep another 5 and repeat-- I think he kept that up from the time I brought him home from the hospital until I went back to work at 10 weeks....I was SO happy to be getting 5 hours to sleep in a row that I didn't care WHICH 5, so I threw away the clock and went with it!

At that age, my youngest (now 12 wks) went between 930 and 11, after a nursing session- he usually was napping in the evening before that though. He is now going to bed between 745
And 810 and sleeps all night some nights- till like 530 am. I am nursing and just started back to work... So I miss him :(

I had my sons on a schedule from the minute they got home from the hospital. Here's what I did, per my pedi's recommendation.

I would nurse/feed my baby every 2-3 hours from the time I wanted him "up" in the morning (usually 6am-ish) until the time I designated as bedtime (usually 8pm-ish). This included waking him up from a nap, if necessary. My pedi swore up, down, left, right and center that if you fed a baby regularly all day, and on demand at night, baby would 1) never fall into a deep sleep during the day and thus be tired at night and 2) get sufficient calories to not be hungry at night. Once baby hit 12-15 pounds, according to my pedi, nighttime feedings were no longer nutritionally necessary.

Worked like a charm. Both my babies were sleeping through the night (8-6) at six weeks old.

Good luck!

I think at this age I was putting my son to bed later - around 10 pm. I think it's great though that you recognize as they grow older that bedtime needs moved earlier significantly. If you're interested, please read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, by Weisbluth. I followed it precisely and it has worked WONDERS for my son since the beginning. He acknowledges that at your little one's age bedtime is generally between 9 and 11 but that by 4 months of age this should be much earlier, between 6 and 8. At your baby's age they are getting so much day sleep that sleeping around 10 pm- whenever AM is probably wonderful! As day time becomes more interesting and they stay awake more, you need to make up for it with night time sleep.

Good luck and congrats on your new little one!
